One more suggestion for copying ISO's to USB instead of Rufus or Unetbootin, is balenaEtcher. It is good on Windows/MacOS/Linux.

A great presentation. And a recommended procedure for beginners. I personally have my own Home partition. It secures my personal data. In case of OS crash or OS updates. I think Ubuntu and other distro should have had it as standard settings. During the installation process. Like Windows creates its own D drive. :)

@bostechmo
Жыл бұрын
Sorry for a late answer. We were not able to reply before. You can install Ubuntu on a 12 years old laptop, but you should not. It might not work properly, because Ubuntu with Gnome desktop might be too heavy for older hardware. We recommend a distro with XFCE desktop environment.

Does Ubuntu or Ubuntu based distros like linux mint run well on lenovo ideapad 500-15isk? Will all the hardware and drivers work out of the box or do i need to configure something? It's specs are similar to the laptop shown in the video

We haven't had the experience with that specific type of Lenovo that you've mentioned. However, our Lenovo machine that we've shown in the video did not have any issues, and everything worked out of the box right after the installation. No additional installation, like drivers for instance, was needed.

do you have tutorial on how to install drivers on linux?
@bostechmo
10 ай бұрын
No. We have talked on that issue within several of our videos. Basically, drivers have already been incorporated into Linux. Particularly in Ubuntu, there is a specific app called "Driver Manager" that you should run, and it will check if your system needs any additional drivers, and then install those if there are any drivers available. Most of the time, Linux works out-of-the-box, because drivers are already there. Thanks for your comment.
@androidenthusiast4943

@@bostechmo This is also applicable on Laptops?
@bostechmo
10 ай бұрын
@@androidenthusiast4943 Yes, of course. However, sometimes, when you do install Ubuntu on a laptop with some "weird" wi-fi card or something, it may happen that the internet connection doesn't work out-of-the-box. In that case, connect your laptop to your modem via cable, start the Driver manager app, and then it will install necessary drivers. We had an issue like that years ago with an HP laptop with Broadcom wi-fi, and that was the way we resolved it.

Thanks for you comment. The most probably, you have an issue. This can range form bizarre reasons, like not unplugging the installation media, to some serious ones such as not turning-off the safe Boot option in BIOS/UEFI. We haven't really had issues with installing Ubuntu, when it comes to turning-off the Secure Boot option, we never turned it off prior to installation, simply, there was no need. Ubuntu usually automatically recognizes hardware and it just settles down to our hardware. However, people might have different experiences. Also, you should try reinstall with manual repartition the drive or to include the UEFI partition and so on. Any question you might have, can easily be found on Ubuntu forums.

Hi. Drivers are incorporated in the Linux system anyway, so you should not have problems at all. However, several years ago, we had issues with HP and Braodcom drivers in Ubuntu. In that case, you must connect your laptop to the modem (via cable), start the Driver Manager app, install the additional drivers, and then it all works properly.

@bostechmo
11 ай бұрын
@@Hi-uz4hdYes. We have used it like that and have had no issues. However, you should google-search your laptop in regard to its Linux (Ubuntu) compatibility in general (just in case). Although, as mentioned earlier, all the drivers are baked within Ubuntu anyway, so you should not have any issues whatsoever (in our case with several HP and Lenovo machines, everything worked out-of-the-box). If it's relatively older hardware, that's even better. The issues mostly arise with the latest and greatest hardware.

Well, if I understood you correctly, the installer should automatically detect your network. If not, we usually plug in a network cable into a laptop, and then install additional drivers upon system installation. That should make your wi-fi work properly.

Isn’t Windows 11 just a reskin of Windows 10 with literally no upgraded features other than the desktop environment? How much more do you think the share of PC users who use Linux will increase because of this? And will K/ubuntu remain the go-to distro for the changeover?
