Thank you for the demonstration and tips! My 1970's handrail was much smaller, so I added an inch to mark at 32". It ended up being on the high side of the 38" code range. Next time, I will stick to your recommended 31" mark.

Thanks so much for this video. Thorough, to the point, with a mind to code and best practices. My friend's handrail just bit the dust, and having seen your video I realize it was doomed from the start. No returns, no liquid nails, and just two wall mount brackets holding the whole rail! So the handrail staying in place was entirely dependent on 4 screws managing the stress. It was bound to come off sooner or later, I just wish it didn't happen to my friend because we now need to fix it (landlord is not gonna do this right). Glad there are a few inches window for the height of the handrail, so I don't have to try and secure the screws in the exact area where they were already yanked out. Gonna ask my friend about cutting some returns, hopefully he'll go for it so we can leave the handrail sturdier than we found it. Thanks again!

I think you did a terrific job explaining the process for installing the hand rail to code. You did overlook the spacing of the brackets. For code do I need to plan spacing a specific amount of 48” more or less?
@huntercarlson5446
8 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! There isn’t a code for bracket spacing, the inspector just checks for rigidity. Depending on the spacing of your framing (studs) it will either be 16” on center or 24” on center. I would recommend every other stud if possible. Most of the time the bracket spacing isn’t symmetrical. Just try and get the brackets as close to the ends of your rail while still screwing into a stud. Hope this helps and have a blessed day 😎

Good info. I'm looking to install handrails to the exterior of my property; specifically to stucco. Besides ensuring I have the right screws, do you have any tips for exterior handrails?
@huntercarlson5446

All I can really think of when it comes to exterior handrails is to make sure the hardware and the material used is meant for the outdoors...applying to stucco shouldn’t be too hard, you got it right, make sure you have some good exterior screws 2 1/2”- 3” long...you won’t really be nailing the ends to the stucco so make sure you have enough brackets and a bracket close to each end! Hope this helps...have only done a couple exterior handrails...any more questions I’m glad to help! Have a blessed day!

Hi Leslie! The brackets come from my lumber distributor here in the Denver area. I get what your saying on the large ones from Home Depot…I would try Amazon and just search “ wall mount handrail brackets” I’m pretty sure you will find one very similar to the ones I use. The screws sometimes can be weak so use a 1/8” drill bit to pre-drill your holes. Thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

@huntercarlson5446
2 жыл бұрын
Don’t be afraid to “screw” things up…the worst case is that you have to spend another 20-30 bucks on more material until you like your finished product! The piece does have a bevel on the top that I cut off of the 1x12. There are actually 2 cuts to each side of the stringer. 53 degree and 37 degree…you pointed out the bevel which is the 53 degree cut and the 37 degree cut is parallel to the framing of the landing…at the bottom of the stringer the 37 degree cut is exposed where the 53 degree cut is tight to the flooring (or in my case the sub-floor. You can totally use the shelving material and place the round edge down so you won’t see it…or try and find a “millwork” shop in your area that might have 1x12 without the round edge…it’s hard to explain over text the steps I use to install, but I will get some video when I get back to work after the holidays.

Nice Job Hunter, In doing woodwork and carpentry as you know we use chalk lines a lot, and for sure they can stain our work, so in a case where the surface is finished or bleed-through is possible and I don't want it stained, but still when I prefer to use my chalk line any way I use 2-inch masking tape stretching it where ever I need to pop the chalk line, then I'm able to use my chalk line anyway without staining the area that should not have chalk marks or stains, because the chalk goes on the masking tape instead of the wall, etc. when I'm done the masking tape is easily removed. I now use masking tape on many projects instead of marking directly on my work-pieces. Again Thanks for taking the time to help others.

I just want to say I love the content. I can see the quality in your work. I've been doing finish carpentry for about 15 years now. Another tip for getting the ends tight to the wall is loosing the screws in the wall just a touch before you attach screws into the bottom of the rail. Once that is done tighten the screws in the wall. It will suck it in alot tighter.

Thank you so much for your demonstration of installing a handrail. I have regular handrails with spindles, but as a senior (75-yr-old woman) I wanted to also replace the handrails on the walls that had been removed by painters several years ago. They did a good job of patching the holes so I needed to determine how high they should go. I searched other videos and magazine articles on the subject, but they usually involved two guys, a level, a carpenter's square and . Using your example (31" up from the bottom stair nosing and 31" up from the top stair nosing), I attached the handrails in less than 30 minutes. They are mounted to studs and with three brackets on each, they are sturdy as can be. This will make the stairs much safer for me for years to come.

In my scenario there isn't a stud at either end of the hand rail. Is the liquid nail, and some 18g nails in the drywall adequate to support +/- 14 inches from the last bracket to the end of the rail? Thanks for the video, you're a great teacher, fun to watch.
@huntercarlson5446
10 ай бұрын
Yes a bracket that is +/- 14 inches from the end will still have plenty of support! You are not required to glue and nail the ends, I am required for the home inspection. If you see yourself possibly removing the handrail in the future for some reason and don’t want drywall repair then I recommend not gluing and nailing to the wall, just add additional brackets in the middle for more support. You can still glue and nail the ends if your are concerned! Hope this helps and thank you for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

Just wanted to say thank you for doing this video. I'm new to woodworking and general DIY projects around the house and the way you taught the process was fantastic. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise. I finished my railing and just need to stain/finish it. For those in the same boat as me (aka. inexperienced), I have a few cautions. Be careful with the glue and nail gun with the returns. Hunter makes it look super easy (because he's good) but for someone with little experience, it can be tricky. For instance, my returns didn't fit perfect so I fumbled around with them causing me to have some issues getting a clean insertion with the nail gun. Even if not perfect, I wouldn't worry too much as sanding corrected the mistakes. The other issue I had was actually drilling the damn screws into the wall for the mounts. I did not drill a pilot hole at first and only got the screw about halfway in. After drilling pilots and using a little wax (the screws were a little bigger than most), it went in without any trouble. Anyways, just wanted to share some experiences for those giving this a try. Keep up the good work Hunter. You're really helping a lot of people with what you do!

I am super happy I was able to help you finish your railing! I totally understand the cautions you introduced, nailing the returns together can be very tricky, I should have explained a little better how I was holding and securing those pieces before I shoot the first nail! Great mention of just using some sand paper to help the end result! I totally get you on screwing into the wall and into the handrail! The brackets I use sometimes have real crappy screws that strip or break, but 1 thing I need to note for ya is that I'm using an "Impact Driver" drill so it really helps with not having to pre-drill those holes...not sure what drill you were using. Once again with the wax idea! Awesome call! I hope many people read your comment when watching this video, just a couple more great tips to help others along the way! I really appreciate the time and effort you took into leaving this comment! Gives me the motivation to continue the path I am on right now! No the liquid nail is not necessary on the ends…it just is for me for inspection on these new residential homes… I would try to add some sort of metal epoxy to the returns if you are going to return the handrail to the drywall. If is just going to be a straight metal handrail without pieces returning to the wall just make sure to add additional brackets on the ends for extra support and keep 1 1/2” space to the wall for your hand to slide up and down nicely… hope this helps… any more questions please let me know. Nice tutorial but I would never glue return miter to wall just yet. Better paint job on wall and finishing of handrail if taken off then installed after wall n railing painted and poly.

Thank you for watching! I completely understand your point! Since it is a new build home the inspectors require me to have the ends secured to the wall. Sometimes I can get a bracket close to the end and not glue and nail to the wall, but with 24” on center framing I’m having to secure the ends to the wall to pass code…hope that makes sense! Appreciate your time! Have a blessed day 😎

Pro tip. Another easy way to find a stud is use a magnet. The magnet will find the drywall screws.

Thanks for a great tip! I have a couple earth magnets in the truck and I’ll add one to my tool belt! No more searching for batteries for the stud finder! Have great night!

By the way Hunter I watch your videos, Spencer Lewis, and Finish Carpentry Tv. Why? It’s for pros by pros! I liked your window Stool method which the other guys and me use a variation of Gary Katz method w/drywall screws! Your method for rails beats them all no smeary nasty PL 400 u use a dry wall screw!!! Genius ! Buddy your channel will “BOOM”! Take off one day when YT feels like your not a threat and puts u out there! Ok I am supporting u and throw out some merc! Everyone loves a well made designed hat!!!! Hey riddle me this Batman?? Where do we go when we die?? Pls someone give me the answer!

stumbled on this video as I was looking for tips on how to secure my handrail that was previously installed by last homeowner that got loose. Thanks!

Nicely done, Hunter! One additional tip... I make sure my stock handrail ends are trimmed to 90 degrees and then mark and make both of my 1 1/2" clearance 45-degree miter cuts on each end, and just swap them to complete the mitered joints - (there is less maneuvering of the stock on the saw and essentially zero waste).

How much do you charge a customer for that install? I have someone coming out tomorrow to give me an estimate.

Just a ballpark for you…I’d say about $750 total with about $300-$350 material cost…

I used Titebond wood glue to secure the ends of the handrail together and Liquid Nail to help secure the ends(returns) to the wall. Both products can be found at Lowes/Home Depot or your local hardware store. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! It seemed there were no measurements taken to put the brackets evenly spaced? Was the middle bracket centered between the other two? Is there a way to install a bracket safely if that measurement isn’t on a stud? I would love to know if you set brackets equidistance from each other and how to secure one that doesn’t fall on a stud. Thank you!!!
@huntercarlson5446

You are right I didn’t take any measurements for the brackets…you need each bracket to be on a stud or the bracket will eventually fail and pull out of the drywall. I usually go every other stud so the brackets would be spaced about 32” inches apart. (Stud framing should be every 16”) Brackets are evenly spaced on the wall, but not concerned about how they are spaced on the rail. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Hmm…sorry you feel that way. The painter will caulk the ends of the handrail to the wall even if I don’t glue and nail them. I do that for extra support. I personally haven’t had a customer complain about that yet. To each their own so I don’t fault you on your opinion. Have a blessed day 😎

I’m using 2” 16 ga finish nails for nailing the returns(or ends) together, using a Metabo 2 1/2” nail gun from Lowe’s...I’m also using 100 grit sand paper to lightly sand it all down...thank you for watching and all the great questions! As always have a blessed day!

Dude, that was rad. Super helpful. Im doing the same railing but the wall is concrete. are there any codes about the required depth, quantity or material of the concrete wall anchors? Or am I making this more complicated?
