I came across this totally by accident. Very interesting and thanks for talking us thru' this quickly. You'll undoubtedly have heard of Finale and that's what I've been using. Both have their limitations, especially with recognising the beat, as you mentioned here. Presumably, what I'd have to do is play almost robotically whilst playing piano, recording my playing and making it into an MP3 or .WAV file first, then convert it using these 2 apps. Years ago I used Allegro 98 (ancient!) and when I played fancy stuff such as rapid arpeggi and glissandi, all I got on the sheet music was a huge block chord - useless! So, I'm reluctant to try yet another app for now. Really what I want is software that I can use when playing and it all magically converts it into beautiful sheet music for myself or anyone else to play - the way I played it. To be able to record someone playing and then printing off the musical score onto hard copy would be utterly terrific, but we're still not there yet sadly. I'd love to be able to do this as many pianists for example just play as they saw fit at the time and often don't studiously write it all down for others to be able to practise and play.
@Madgemade

If you use play on a MIDI keyboard, it is possible to connect the keyboard to software like MuseScore which will record all the notes and place them straight into the score. This skips the recording step described here. If the piece can be played directly on a keyboard then there's no reason to use a recording.

That won't change really much. No software can distinguish between a note played the same time for various instruments and say, ok, that's the violin, that's the sax, that's the flute,... An audio file, mp3, flac, wav, ogg or whatever you want is a mich of all the frequencies, so it's impossible to get it right a full orchestra or a multi instrument file to a sheet music just simply with a software.

It’ll be interesting and useful when the software is able to transcribe orchestra or big band recordings into sheet music. Transcribing solo or duo parts is a little task and should be done manually by listening (for the training of the ear). By the way, Mary Had a Little Lamb goes in the key of G. There is no # in the F-line in the score. That might have been detected and corrected if the melody contained a F# (?)

Greetings Sir, Beethoven's 5th is is 2/4 time, while the Anthem program recognized/ printed it common time: 4/4. This could the result of what you mentioned, regarding the use of the metronome. Maybe this is the key, for the program to recognize the correct Time Signature. Otherwise it can't distinguish the correct beat/ time. The bottom line is, that these AI notation programs main benefit, is notating in a flash, what can take an eternity to write by hand or a click of a mouse. Plus with the Musescore you can add all the pedal markings, fingering, expressions etc. Into a Publishing quality edition score. What in the old days could only be accomplished via a Music Publishing House. Great video. Thank you for sharing. All the best, Álvaro Guevara y Vázquez, Composer.

Great video! The transcription of Beethoven's 5th was, of course, flawed in both time and instrumentation. Having transcribed the first movement myself, (by hand, many years ago), it's no picnic! So I'll cut the software a break... but I also noticed that Anthem seemed to miss fast notes. For example, the very first measure of the transcription only shows TWO G's, (i.e. it turned the famous opening, "dit-dit-dit-dah" into "dit-dit-dah")! This got me to thinking: suppose you used a THIRD piece of free software, like "Audacity," to pre-process the .mp3? Audacity can slow the audio by, say, 30%, while keeping the pitches and relative timing intact, and save the adjusted file as a new .mp3. Opening the ADJUSTED .mp3 file in Anthem might allow it to better detect the spaces between notes. Just a thought. Has anybody tried this?

Tx. I am using the free open source program sonic visualizer from the Center for digital music of the Queen Mary University in London. It has plugins to also convert mp3 to note notation and it has kind of the same issues... So I had exactly the same idea to import it into Musescore for further editing. Then I was thinking, if AnthemScore can do a better job then I could buy that... but apparently not. So, unless I find something that really works I will just continue with sonic visualizer. My best bet now is to combine different recognition features from different plugins. There are a lot of plugins and they all do something such as recognizing the beat and the note onsets, and then there are plugins that recognize the note pitch and duration. So it all isn't perfect, but if you combine them maybe you can filter out the errors better. Kind of the same idea how to fix errors by means of redundancy or extra information. And then edit the rest in musescore. Anyway, tx for the demo!
