Its a corner Hamburg matten filter and you dont need to make abarrier in front of it. And I couldnt understand why you talk as.if you had found something New . Germans swiss people use it for mote than seventy years. And the surface is also important. You lowered th surface ofmechanical and biological surface by bending it

I have something like this, and have the external filter sucking water out of there. Like a huge pre-filter to the external filter. Best of both worlds. Keeps the babies out of the filter intake, and adds MOAR FILTER.

Ugg this is NOT a matten filter. We have got to stop doing this (yes I know the video is a few years old, but my point is, it's time to stop). A true matten filter is not meant to be regularly cleaned, and acts more like a vertical version of an undergravel filter. Wrap your brain around that one.

This is one of my favorite DIY filters you’ve shown yet. Simple but very effective. I’m thinking of setting up a 125gal and do 3 of these. A half round in the middle then one in each of the back corners. Stuffing a lot of bio media behind them.

i see this as also being a top corner tank for those who don't want to take it the whole way to the bottom of the tank. It would require you to keep the bottom of the bucket on when cutting it up but i think it would look really nice and serve will for people with small tanks to manage
@DELCOJAWN

Awesome as always Joey, I'd guess you could go one step further and silicone two pieces of bucket about 2" apart (innermost first) put the sponge in between them and fill the inside with pot scrubbies, lava rock, bio balls, etc along with the pump for even more beneficial bacteria. This would help from possible recycling when cleaning the sponge.

Not really a sump.. it’s just an internal filter, to make a sump you would just need to drill holes in the bottom portion then layer upwards and pump back from the top portion. Would work just like a canister filter then.

Fish R Relaxing hi! I was wondering exactly just this but since I’m really new, let me see if I understand: holes drilled on the bottom part, then a chunk of sponge wedged in, then biological media (in a bag?) sitting on the sponge and lastly the pump/heater?

Think abt ur filter when u remove the form in ur filter to clean (every now n then),how dirty it is.. Its pretty dirty with white form what i can C. Wouldnt that just leak back into the water.. I guess once u clean the filter and the form, turn it bck on then in few hrs water column will clear up..

Hi Joey - many thanks for another interesting video :) Since seeing Rachel O'Leary's modified manifold hill stream videos with the poret foam corner matten filter I've been thinking about doing one of these myself. I think you could improve on this design by just cutting four large rectangular holes in the bucket leaving a cross shape of plastic as a brace and to support the powerhead's return nozzle. This would mean you'd get more even flow through a much larger volume of foam than if the water's just being sucked through holes, also making it much less likely to clog. I think you'd probably need slightly thicker foam for this to work well - probably 2" would work. The main reason I like this idea is that the beauty of matten filters is that the exposed sponge offers fry, inverts and smaller fish a large surface to graze on all kinds of microscopic critters, which wouldn't happen so much with the "lots of small holes" approach. The weakness of what I'm suggesting and a great strength of yours is that the holey plastic retains the division between tank and "sump" areas when the sponge is removed. However I think that's easily solved by taking another quarter of the bucket and leaving it smooth and complete - then just slide it down between the brace and the foam before the foam is removed for cleaning. Actually there'd be no real reason not to use something like 2 to 4mm acrylic in place of the cut up bucket, it might cost a bit more - but then you could buy whatever colour you liked and not have to bother to spray paint it. cheers :)

Excellent tutorial! I have used this same set up - minus the plastic bucket - for my 125g aquarium. I did a standard Hamburg Mattenfilter and used Koralia pumps in opposing corners for flow, and added Matrix in bags behind the foam. It was a great space for hiding the heater too. I had a sensible bioload of fish and it worked beautifully, even for such a large tank. I have since moved and I'm getting ready to set the 125g up again, and I will incorporate acrylic instead of a bucket just because I need the added size. (I may even chose to cordon off part of the back of the tank and make baffles) Your comment of the plastic preventing fish from getting behind the area while rinsing the foam is worth it's weight in gold - just try herding fish in a tank that size! lol Thanks for the wonderful vid...
