super helpful. I trace stuff with the bezier tool all the time and I'm left with disjointed paths.

Thanks, very clear explanation :) I use this tool often. Shift+J is a standard shortcut for it, and if you hover over one of the nodes while pressing the shortcut, node's position will be preserved and the second node will be moved all the way instead. Also it's worth noting that only end nodes of open paths can be joined this way, took me a while to realize this.

I have circle converted to a path, cut away a segment (resulting in an open circle), and want to attach lines leading away from the opening. When I now combine the end node of a line with one of the end nodes of the open circle, I weirdly get a filled out circle, with the area of the filling going up to the other end of line (which I did not include in the end point combining). WTF? Who can help?

two questions 1. are there hotkeys for these 2 actions? I couldn't find them in the preferences. 2. when you have 1 path selected, you can continue drawing it using the pen/bezier tool. I've seen some people connect 2 separate paths using the pen bezier tool in some tuts but I didn't manage to do it myself. every time I have 2 separate paths selected, and I press b for the tool, they both get deselected. how can I join 2 paths using the tool?

1:54 this has happened to me several times. to solve it I would close the two separate paths and then go to Path > Union. but the way you taught it is easier

I'm coming back here to thank you for this tutorial. I'm making a vectorart right now and this problem has happened a few times during the process and, if it weren't for this video, I would have had to do a long process to get it fixed. thank you Nick

How do I do the opposite, separate the paths into 2 pieces but maintain the original position

Is it not possible to join 3 nodes together? For example a corner on a 3 dimensional cube? I know I can do layers, but I’m creating SVG files for CNC work, so it all has to be in a single layer.
@LogosByNick

You can merge them together but there will only be a single path going through it. There's no way to have 3 paths coming from a single node.

I manipulate SVGs in Inkscape, CarveCo Maker & Carbide Create. The latter 2 have an identifier for the 1st or Start node and also methods for identifying broken path, how to identify on Inkscape? Simple for elephant, click & move 1 segment. But not for the broken circle example of a single break??

@@LogosByNick i see many crashes on my pc, especially upon changing any small parameter within the preferences. Compared to illustrator, inkscape hangs a lot and i m on a decently spec'd pc. Hence i wanted to know if this is the case with macos too

As Nick says, a little unstable but not enough to stop me being productive with it. I'm always covered by my own backups but the 'crash backups' it makes as crashes always work as well..

How do you create the starting elements? It is easy to create the effect with a stroke + circles, but then joining does not work as they are not pure stokes. Is that some kind of path effect that creates circular caps? 🤔

I had the same question and found it at Stroke style > Markers. Select from dropdown for First Node, Middle Nodes and Last Node respectively.
