Always, always, always make sure the vehicle's transmission is in park or neutral so engine doesn't fire up and you accidentally run yourself over. I can't stress this enough! People get injured and often killed every year from said unsafe practice. It's a tragic thing that can easily be avoided. Having grown up farming, I realize the need to do this sort of thing on occasion to get a job done. Regardless, the best thing you can do is fix/replace the starter solenoid or ignition switch feed circuit (trigger wire, as you call it in the video) the correct way as soon as possible.

Excellent point, this procedure has gotten me home many times where I could fix the starter. Also a cure for the Classic hot Small Block Chevy starter issue. But safety first is always the rule

If you are trying to start the vehicle this way you need the key on to give electricity to the coil, computer, fuel pump etc. May not work on vehicles with safety interlock.

surpss No, it's really not magic at all. It's an all too common yet very, very potentially dangerous bypass method. Please be extremely careful if ever trying this. Always make sure that your vehicle's transmission is either in neutral or park when attempting such a practice, to avoid accidentally running yourself over. Nobody wants to read about you in the obituarys!

it means the starter is good and it could be a different issue, including, but not limited to the ignition switch, the key cylinder, a loose wire, etc.

Impossible to tell without being there and looking at things. You could check the voltage before and at the connector to see if there is a voltage drop.

So If Im doing this on my 05 Impala , does that mean a bad starter ?
@mightythor4927
5 жыл бұрын
Does not mean the starter us bad, could be an ignition or wire problem. On older Chevy engines, the heat from the engine would soak into the solenoid and cause excessive resistance so the starter would not engage. I used to have to start my 68 camaro this way till I put a heat shield around the starter to keep the heat from the headers from soaking into the solenoid.

@phillipm3799
2 жыл бұрын
Typically it’s the solenoid or key switch that needs replaced. If you jump it and it does nothing then the starter is bad or the gear in the starter is stuck. Hit it with a hammer to loosen it up. If all that fails you need a new one or rebuild it.

You can use jumper cables, might be really tight trying to hook them up to the starter itself, might be easiest to hook to the battery cables.

+Hola soy pollo it's because my guy from the city next to me was selling a 99 Pontiac grand a. it looks clean from outside but he didn't send me pic of inside and it was a 1000 buck now he said 500 just because he said the starter doesn't work and I got a simple question if I jumped stared like that can I ride the car for lets say 20 mins? so that I get to a yunk yard of my city and buy a used starter and install it myself?
@mightythor4927
7 жыл бұрын
That all depends on whether the starter is broken or not. This will not usually work on a broken starter. This is usually done when there is a problem with the wires going to the starter, or when a starter is too hot and the solenoid has too much resistance (hot chevy starter). If it is only the solenoid that is bad this might or might not get you running. If the starter motor is bad this will not fix that problem.
@pollonigmare13

+MightyThor yup it's just in case of emergency I know it won't fix it xD but I hope it works if not I just have to buy the starter first and just replace it on his house thanks man !!!
@jonathanrodriguez-og6uu

mine just spins up what does that mean
@turbodiesel4709
7 жыл бұрын
jonathan rodriguez Most likely the starter solenoid is bad or potentially the starter bendix is bad. Either way, it's likely time for a new starter in your vehicle. Additionally, if you jump across the two larger terminals on the solenoid, and not across the hot heavy positive battery wire to the small "start" wire, on many starters, the bendix will not engage the ring gear on the flywheel, and you will only hear the starter motor spin over, without any engine cranking. Hope this info helped you better understand.
