One of the reasons I like this channel is because you use your trucks to pay your bills, not haul your ego. I do the same, and have a ton of respect for those of us that depend on these trucks every day. Your information is very helpful, and any advice you can give that helps make a truck last longer with fewer break downs is advice worth taking.

I’m a seasoned(49 yrs old) Mobile Diesel Mechanic w/my own small business here in Conroe Tx & your concern about high egt’s is more than legit!Letting any diesel breathe freely in & out w/great tuning will bring loads of efficiency-i suspect as time goes on technology will allow for everyone of us that wants run lower egt’s under demanding loads to do it fairly easily -I’m a Diesel nerd so your videos really peak my interest. Thanks for your time brother

Sam, personally, I love it when you do technical videos on heavy towing, and how your different trucks are set up and running. For those haters and the ones that simply don't understand that your trucks (along with the other equipment) are your living and not some hot rod that daddy bought them to tearing around town in and showing off. Take care of your truck(or car) and it'll take care of you.

Great video!!! I tow a 38' fifth wheel toy hauler that has gvwr of 19k. Nothing like what you are towing but have experienced some radical climbs like on highway 70 coming up to the Eisenhower tunnel to come into Denver. A couple of times I had to touch 1400° for a few seconds and then was able to back off to cool it down. Cummins states that they engineer their engines to hold 1500° but I totally agree with you. Getting up to 1300° makes me start to get concerned. Again, thanks for your videos.

Totally agree, when I hit 1150 I start getting nervous. RPM is definitely your friend when towing. Methanol injection and knowing how and when to use it helps a lot. I run about 85% water and I don't over use it.

You are doing a great job with your content. You have a good mix of video skills, information and humor. I am new to the KZitem world and dove in when I bought the ranch in 2016 with questions about how to install erosion control, French drains, hydraulic lift for a dump and a host of other DIY projects. This led me to your channel. I like the fact that you are respectful, polite and well spoken and my first reaction and comment was about your relationship with your father and how proud he must be of the grown up you have become. I lost my dad a few years ago and miss him dearly, he raised me to work hard, work smart and never stop learning from others. I’ve thought about starting a KZitem channel to document my retirement, the Ranch project, the Farmhouse project and all that changes when you go from 40 years of work to where I’m at now. I am thin skinned and don’t deal with haters very well, so I don’t think I could handle that part of the many parts and pieces of building a channel. I enjoy and appreciate what you bring to KZitem, keep it up Sam👍👍👍

He addressed them right after doing the compound setup, it was right around 1000 under decent acceleration without a trailer.. I can only imagine what he was seeing pulling the big enclosed with the 05 in the back. But I believe you are right. I don't think he ever said anything while towing.

You are a smart man. I am a master machinist. Exhaust Gas Temperature is very important and anything above 1300 degrees you will overheat thr oil, burn up turbo and Engine bearings. Even in a stock truck an EGT gauge is a great idea. A great tune should deliver power with fuel efficiency. Like you said brother dumping fuel doesn't get great results. Loved the video and God bless.

Love the videos... Keep up the great work, Sam! I have a 2013 5500 Deleted and a 2014 Deleted. The 13 doesn’t have an egt probe yet. The 14 runs high on the EGTs. I think some of it is the gearing but also the tuning. As you said the engine has plenty of power to get the job done, but pushing it that high on the EGTs can have some major consequences. I prefer to keep them below 1250. When dealing with the Dallas traffic I sometimes don’t pay as close of attention as I should... i have looked over to see it over 1400 before. Once my heart starts beating again I make sure to let up on the throttle &/or force it to downshift. On a regular basis I’ll have between 20-35k behind the truck. Heaviest load we ever actually weighed came in around 54k gross. 5500 pulled it just fine. We run electric/hydraulic brakes on all of our big gneck trailers, which definitely helps bring everything to a stop in a hurry. I would highly recommend paying the extra for that vs all electric brakes IF you are going to be hauling heavy.

Thanks for the info, Sam. Your experience really makes you knowledgeable on the subject! My biggest concern in my truck is RPM. I have an 04 Cummins with an auto tranny, idk what gears it has but on 35s it runs about 2200-2300 rpm at 60 and over 2500rpm around 70. This is my first diesel so I am paranoid, but I'd be lying if I said I don't normally set the cruise right at 60 and slowly make my way down the highway.

Your video was excellent! So much great info and I appreciate you putting this together. I have an 07 5.9 with 113k miles, full built Auto Transmission, EFI Live, Airbox, and slightly baffled 4” exhaust. I tow a 10k camper, so I would guess I am 12k fully loaded…not anywhere close to what you are towing. So glad to watch your video and know I am well within range on my EGT’s when towing. I hit 1100 on big hills, and on a few occasions, I may hit 1200 but I always try and stay below that. If I am half way up a hill and already approaching 1200, I will downshift to bring those temps back down. The key info I take from your video is 1200 isn’t the melting point like I always thought. If you are hitting 1300 on occasion, I feel better about just hitting 1200 once in a while. Thanks again for a great video and valuable info! I only wish I had watched your video a long time ago. 👍

Glad I found your channel! I drove truck for 50 years, the temperatures were simple. Water temperature going up, oil pressure dropping you better get out of it. I never watched the pyro. The manifold pressure was my go to. Anyway I don't savvy thi.but new wording for the same things. Also I just watched your video on egt`s. I have a deleted 6.7 cummins and sometimes I get pretty heavy..30-40 k. The guy that tuned my truck said not to go over 1400. You say 1200. That's a big difference. I just bought a new travel trailer that's going to put me north of 31k.??? I'm also concerned about the tyranny. Please give me some real numbers to go by on these ram's. Mine was super gutless till I got it deleted at 80k. Happy now. Except they keep sending me more things to download...I don't know if I want to it runs real good. Sorry got caught up in the moment.

I enjoyed watching this video. It sounds like you are a pretty down-to-earth person. I agree that there is nothing to prove by driving your ego up a hill. I've never agreed with that philosophy. I have a 2010 long box with 550,000 km, 330,000 mi. I have a truck camper that is about 2800 lb that I carry around often and I often tow my 4,000 lb boat while I'm carrying the camper. I also tow a 10,000 lb fifth wheel occasionally. I love my truck very much. It's recently developed a symptom of using engine coolant, but there is nothing in the oil thankfully. I think the turbo is maybe starting to tell me that it needs to be retired. What is your suggestion for a replacement turbo on a deleted 6.7?

Where are you measuring your EGT's at? On my Ford 6.0, I measure them at the back of the left exhaust manifold, and it sounds like you're measuring yours at the exhaust manifold also. Some measure EGT at the downpipe and that'll read a bit lower. I pull a 10,000# 5th wheel, and on an 8% grade I've seen about 1150 steady in 3rd gear at about 3,000 RPM. If I have it in my top tune (45HP) and I floor it getting on an interstate, I'll see temps over 1300 before it gets out of 2nd gear (automatic). BTW I never tow in this setting, I use one of the lower hp tunes, usually about 25hp added. My truck has the EGR blocked and a 5" exhause with a muffler.
