Great information. I agreed that getting to a paid account is probably the best option. However you are required to have a real business email address, not a Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo, etc... This limit the option to this script. I appreciate what Oracle is offering, but it is a bit unfair for someone who is a sole trader and does not have or want a business email address setup.

You’re not required to have a business email, I’m using free outlook account. The main thing people struggle with is credit card. You need to have a valid credit card, many people try to use unsupported debit cards and prepaid cards and the are unable to set up new acct.

I like supervisor better, as it monitors your process and makes sure it is always running, it can auto restart it for you in case of crash, start it on boot, etc. I have a video on building minecraft bedrock edition with supervisorctl if you wanna see what the config looks like. kzitem.info/news/bejne/wn5vmYKMmHuehI4 it should be very similar if you are runninga java just swap the command that starts your server.

I think you should do anything more useful with that machine... FAHClient, Boinc, etc. or just update weekly. The supervisor system sounds good, anyway.) Ramdisk?

I can’t agree more. This set up is absolute waste of resources. I don’t recommend it. As I mentioned in the video there are other ways to get around the %15 utilization requirement. Switch to pay as you go, get smaller shape instance, actually use the instance for something meaningful, etc.

@@TechTutethanks! I dediced to be really safe and so to to updte to paid account: it is requesting 93$ payment on credit card. Is that correct? is it going to be refounded?
@TechTute
11 ай бұрын
@pietromoropietro___moro1345 yes this is normal, it is just payment verification hold it is not an actual charge, and it will be refunded right away at least based on my experience. I have heard others saying it depending on your bank maybe a day or two until it’s removed from your account. Any way I would still recommend making a backup of your VM just in case, it does take a few days for free acct to convert to PAYG, and if something got triggered in OCI already you probably don’t wanna take chances. Plus there is volume backup included with the “always free“ tier so shouldn’t cost you anything. One more thing I’d recommend once you’re switched to PAYG is to setup budget alerts. I have a quick video on how to do it if you are interested check it out. Oracle Cloud Budget Alerts Setup Tutorial: Prevent Overspending kzitem.info/news/bejne/1m-mnoeZg4mnZII

Hey great video. Do you think that would help avoiding high vCPU steal time? In fact, my VM's vCPU time is being stolen (90%+) and I think it's because my server only uses 20% of the vCPU, so the hypervisor gives my VM's computation power to another VM basically... I'm not sure if that's because it thinks mine is idle. Have you had that issue before?
@TechTute
11 ай бұрын
You can give it a try and see if it helps, I haven't had such an issue, but to be honest I don't use the free tier account that much. It kind of make sense to experience higher steal time on the free tier especially during peak usage periods. Let's not forget that the free tier accounts are there to offer a no-cost introduction to cloud services, and limited performance, including high steal time, may occur due to limited resources, shared infrastructure, and high demand. My advice if you want better performance and more consistency is to go with the paid account.
@cheezmartian
5 ай бұрын
The steal time is probably okay.. it just means oracle is correctly using all availability of resources, there's no need to use it for stress testing of you go over oracle's requirements

Hi, if we are upgrading to paid account, is our instance also can be reclaimed and need to meet the minimum 20% ram, processor and network usage standard? If our account is on pay as you go, is it necessary to make the resource usage at least 20% or not needed? Thanks
@TechTute

I have reached out to Oracle a while ago and I was told, with pay-as-you-go you don't need to meet the minimum requirements. For what it's worth I have been running a small free tier server there that does not meet the 20% requirement for over aa year now and still there.

Good question! According to Oracle representative I talked to, as long as you meet minimum utilization requirement on any one of the three metrics, your instance should be safe from being reclaimed. Since OCI console only show Network RX TX in Bytes instead of Percent like they do for CPU and Memory, and I don't know exactly how they calculate network utilization I was unable to come up with solid solution to make sure it meets the 15% network utilization load.
