Currently using Legal & General Home Insurance - lost a Specialized Stumpjumper from my Trimetals bike store a few months ago (replaced that with Asgard, highly recomend - Trimetals, not so much.), Legal & General were extremely effective everything was done online sent them photos & proof of purchase (Receipt) bike obviously named as an item on my insurance was 5 years old, purchased for £1500 - insured for £1700 (RRP at the time) forgot how much extra they charged me but it was a pitance something like £10-15 extra a year (yes, year.)... and they agreed to pay the full £1700 despite age etc no arguments.

I recently had my 2018 Norco Sight A3 stolen and lucky enough recovered by police recently. A worthy bunch of tips to note for you all is make your bike as custom as you can with bright coloured parts etc which makes it stand out more. Then take photos of any unique parts you have on your bike. Makes it easier to spot it, if it has been stolen and to identify your bike when it has been recovered. I take regular photos every time I change or put a new part on my bike like a chainguide or new wheels. Keep your receipts for everything you buy for you bike including the bike receipt when you buy a new bike in a safe place for police to show ownership. Also make scanned copies of them on your laptop and on a external storage drive that way you have backup in case your laptop fails.
@Blank2k2
5 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your recovery, very rare! - can't emphasis the receipt thing enough & make a note the frame number - even if you've given the details to your insurance when initially insuring the bike make sure you keep a record as when you do claim, the insurance company will ask to see the receipt & the frame number. (this is there attempt to get out of paying out)

Although I'm 4 years late getting to this channel, the info is timeless. I have ridden for over 60 years and never yet had my MTB or e-bike stolen. A large hardware store, farm equipment supplier or big truck-stop will have Grade 70 to 120 hardened chain available that is 22mm diameter. Do not rely on the clerk as to the Grade. Verify it by reading the specs on the bucket or barrel that the chain will come from. If you are near commercial shipping docks or barge landings, the riggers may be able to guide you to a supplier. Depending on your location, it can cost as much as $3 US per link!! Take 5 minutes and read up online about how to identify chain grade. The lock will now be the "weak link" in your security. If you are carrying your bike on a hitch rack, be sure to secure the bike and rack to the vehicle frame. Don't rely on a hitch receiver pin lock alone. Keep the bike covered at all times when on the hitch/bumper rack. Put a "WARNING-ALARM" sticker where visible on the back of the tow vehicle and on the bike cover. Hide an Air Tag or similar device on the bike. Don't be timid about taking your bike into your hotel room, regardless of how many cameras the staff says there are. Your battery can cost you $500 or more. Take it to your room if leaving the bike on the rack, day-time or over night while you are away from the vehicle. At home as a deterrent, I have a large water bowl and heavy collar with chain tether for a dog at both my front and rear entrance doors. I also have "Security Camera" decals on all ground floor windows and doors. At night when not home, I leave a curtained lighted room visible from the street with either the radio or TV audio audible from just outside. All approaches to entry are covered by wireless, solar, motion activated LED lights that are out of reach. Ride far. Ride safely!

My Grandfather who lives in a small town in a mountain area once had his bike stolen. He was the type of person who remembers everything. 2 years after his bike was stolen, he saw a similar one while entering a grocery store. He looked at the frame number and instantly recognised as his bike. The bike was not locked up at all so he just took it a drove off. Thankfully, it was just a cheap city bike.

Well there's loads of people and it's locked so I'm sure it'll be fine.... 11 minutes later I came out to fine a space where my bike was 🥺 cctv from St David's showing it was the guy watching me on the bench (never heard a peep from the police) 🤬

Hey there , I'm a bit late to your channel . But it is great . So much great information. Just watching the locking ya bike up videos . I know you guys know that no lock is fool proof . Locks are for the innocent. So here my point . What you also need to know is that a simple battery drill with a 1/4" drill bit ,will drill out every single Keyser barrel , there all made of brass so they don't corrode, I have lost more keys than I've had breakfasts, all I do is drill out the barrel . Opens every lock I've ever had . Password this info on to the viewers or not . But a pad lock is useless . Love you guys . Thanks

Unfortunately in my experience, bike thieves who go after high end bikes are usually the same people you share the trails with. I'm very wary of other random riders who eye my bikes but dont make eye contact or return pleasantries. Also, if some one approaches me and the first question is "that's a nice bike, how much does something like that go for?" Alarm bells go off and I head the other way. Thieves aren't always a stranger and often are friends of your friends or neighbors.

Great video will definitely be using it to properly get my bike locked up. I recently had my downhill and enduro bike stolen. I'd say the most important thing you can do is register your bike as soon as possible with your insurance. this was vital for me as my enduro bike was only a week old when it was stolen so it goes to show it's not worth being lazy with getting it registered. I would also say motion detection lights are a great addition to have since they will come on whenever you go near them. the last thing I have to say is if it's organised criminals then DO NOT confront them if they're in the process just call the police and wait, as they are likely to be armed especially if you have a dog, and if you catch them they are likely going to come back in a couple weeks and do much worse. I know of people that have caught the criminals on their farms and they've come back and set fire to buildings or things.

Just another tip I recently learned myself. I bought my first car a few months ago, 1 of the main things it needed to have was a towing hook so I could put on a bike rack. Now it just so happens that the car I ended up buying has blinded rear windows. I also got lucky and when I put the rear seats down I can fit 1 of my bikes in the trunk if I take off a wheel or 2. With the blinded windows and doubling down on the cargo cover it's very tricky to spot my bike in my car. Not impossible to see I have a bike in my car but you would pretty much have to be looking for something in the car anyway, damn near impossible to casually walk by and see I have a bike in my trunk that's more expensive than the car it's in. TLDR: Keep your bike in your car and not on a rack (if possible) and + points for cargo covers and blinded windows!

I'm lucky enough to never have had any of my families bikes stolen - My house insurance covers all bikes under £2,000 even away from our house but I did need to list my bike (serial number etc). We are covered by Marks & Spencer home insurance (underwritten by AXA I think). Whilst it did put my premium up by about £20 quid a month - I have the confidence that if any or all of our bikes were nicked they would pay out. It's definitely worth insuring your pride and joy. Hopefully you will never need to use the insurance but it is worth the peace of mind knowing that you are covered. Best wishes guys. Dan

My homeowners policy protects my bikes against theft (- deductible), but State Farm (USA) does offer a personal property policy that is comprehensive. The premiums are 10% of the value, however. If you have an entry-level to mid-range bike and your primary concern is theft, it may not be worth the additional premium for the comprehensive property. If however, you have 1 or more professional-grade or e-bikes and you take part in higher-risk riding or are riding in traffic (I know that there are several people that own both road and trail bikes), then the comprehensive policy makes more sense.

Bike theft happens from bikes locked up on porches, from open garages, and mainly just from bike racks. I’m glad I do t live where you don’t have space for a proper two car garage. Homeowner insurance is changing, now you don’t have say a $1000 deductible, your deductible is a percentage of your insured value.

I don't recommend making it hard for them, because if it's to hard they'll use violent methods. For example when thief's entered my house everything was in a safe or locked so they just waited for me to arrive and put a gun on my head, I gave them everything because life it's more important.

I put barbed wire wrapped around my handle bar and seat and nails on my pedals, good luck!
