Tank Transfer Method also works well against ich, moving to completely new/clean QT tank/bucket every 72 hours for 14 days. Also works in eliminating ich, however you should still monitor your fish as it does not stop velvet, and treat them if they show signs. You can use Prazi as well during some of the days of the TTM.

This video saved my fish thanks! Did a 5 minute freshwater dip and then put in a quarantine tank and treated with Ich X. My fish started eating again the next morning! Thankfully I didn't have to use copper to get the parasites to fall off. The freshwater dip made a lot of them fall off and gave my fish some relief, and the Ich X made the rest fall off slowly over the next few days. Thanks again!

I'm here because what was described exactly happened to me. I bought a new fish and threw it stright into the tank as I usually do. This time the worse finally happened. Within 2 days multiple fish began dying. Within a week my entire tank and $700 worth of fish are just about all wiped out. The few I have left are painfully trying to survive even though I have them in a QT tank. I have to make the painful decision soon about taking them out of their misery. This is a huge blunder on my behalf. Please do not make the same mistake.

i would always dose 50% of the recommended measurement. as for how long, i would make sure copper was in the tank for the first week, then give them a break for the 2nd week, using saltwater only. basically, every other week i would use the copper in the water. if they were really bad i would use the mild copper solution the first 2 weeks, skip the 3rd week, do the 4th week, copper the 5th, etc.

Quick question. You say only dose half the recommended copper levels but I keep reading that the recommended copper level is .5 ppm and anything below that; even .45 is ineffective and won’t do anything to help get rid of the parasites. Is this true?
@ROTTERtube
5 жыл бұрын
dosing half the recommended on the bottle or a little more works best. go by what the bottle says and cut that in half. don't listen to anyone...the best area is between what the bottle says and half that amount. dosing close to what the bottle says is toxic levels for fish. it's near impossible to test for copper in the water, which is why i do it this way and never had a problem. my tank has been ich free for a really long time as have the tanks i have worked on for friends.
@1982codeman

Copper has to be at theraputic level to work. Otherwise, you've stressed your fish for no reason at all for 6-8 weeks. I agree with using a tad less than recommended, but not half, that's ridiculous. Good luck, and any quarantine practice is better than none.

I would go with 76 days to 3 months. Better to be safe than sorry. Its also a possibility that some of the ich can become resistant to copper in your QT tank and may not have all died completely off if the fish. Allowing extra time in the QT gives more chances for the ich to die off. Preferably use 2 different products. One that he suggests in the video - Cupramine by seachem and may be another non copper bases remedy. Also a great idea to feed the fish proper vitamins and minerals to boost their immune system while in QT. If you are taking the trouble of doing a fallow/QT - do it for 3 months.

My main tank is 210 gallon. I have 20 fish. Can I use a 37 gallon tank for quarantine? Also, if I have live rock in my main tank already, will all the parasites be eliminated after the 6 to 8 weeks of quarantine?

The 37 gallon may work but depends on the size of the fish. If they are small like clowns, then yes. Yes, all parasites will be gone....best to do 8 weeks to make sure. Some people do 10.

Can I put my inverts (2 choc stars, 2 anemones, 1 hermit ) in a QT and just copper treat my main tank? or will that just kill all of my inverts when I put them back in my main? I have a feeling I need to just wait for the 6-8 weeks... Thanks!

you're right, it will kill them. if you have no fish, sorry about that, just wait it out for 6-8 weeks. when you get a new fish, put them in a QT with MILD copper solution...maybe 20% of what the bottle says. keep them in it for 6 weeks before putting them in the main tank. make sure your QT is cycled first

I have been watching all your videos here lately. Thank you for all the great info! I jut had a really bad Ich Outbreak due to introducing a fish into my tank and has literally killed 90% of my live stock. I have setup a QT/40 Gallon breeder which I feel is way to small for about 20 Fish left. Mind you the are small, like Chomis, several small wrasses and just 2 tangs, Choco Tang and Kole. Even the Kole is small Choco Tang would be the only and its medium. I have a question? I just upgraded from a 150 Fatboy to a 180 gal. I was wondering instead of waiting 2 months to put fish back in tank I could just pull everything out and let all die for a few days and restart and once fish have been in QT with Cupermine for 4 weeks, I would put them back in New tank. Please let me know your thoughts. Also I would use the 150 with about 100 gallons as a QT in the mean time or would it just be best to move all to new tank as it's cycled/ established to new tank and just wait. I removed all fish except for inverts, Shrimp, Urchin, and snails since 8/16/2017. I will always treat with Cupermine Period, from day I get for 4 weeks.

i'm a little confused, but, nothing can go in that contaminated tank for 6 weeks. if you plan on putting any water or rocks or coral from that contaminated tank, you can't put fish in for 6 weeks. so the fish will be in quarantine for 6 weeks. the parasite needs to die and that takes 6 weeks.

Maybe a few stupid questions-- Do I need to do water changes in the empty display tank while the fish are quarentined for the 8 weeks? I know I need to do 50% water changes on the QT tank every day. Also, I have a sponge soaking in the DT to get the bacteria so I can add that to the QT to reduce how often I need to do water changes (right?) How long should I have that in the DT tank before it's good to go in the QT? Thank you!

sounds like you're doing everything right. i would leave the sponge in there for a couple weeks at least. remember, that sponge will more than likely carry ich with it.....so i would go an extra week in the QT. you don't need to do water changes.....it's not part of the process....but you can in order to clean the tank. i still did water changes just because.

never heard that. I've cured many fish with 50%, but, do what you feel is best. I agree to the conclusions of this video for the most part. However there are exceptions. I have a newish 80 gallon tank with 2 ocellaris clowns and a small goby and a corisse wrasse. There are 2 powerheads in the tank mixing the water continuously before it can go down into the sump, and I have a UV steriliser connected to the sump that is rated for a much bigger tank. I change the UV bulb every 6 months when it’s rated for 10 months. I know there is still Ich in the tank, but surely the UV has kept it too such a low level that its not too much of a worry for such a small number of fish. I think its easier for the free swimming theronts to find the overflow outlet leading to the sump than to find the fish. And even in the ocean there are Ich theronts everywhere, just in such low quantities that it doesn’t affect the fish. I think anyone with such a small bio load of fish and an overkill UV with overkill water flow might be able to get away with the ich in their tank. Maybe?? Nothing is for certain. I run the UV 24/7 and also do a 25% water change every week. I certainly wouldn’t do this if I added just a couple more fish as that would increase the Ich food source markedly. Anyway tank is still newish, so maybe I will get hit by ich to wipe out the tank and to prove me wrong. I do plan to get a quarantine tank soon so I can do it the proper way with copper power.

UV won't save anyone's tank. These things multiple at alarming rates by the thousands.
@Whaleydavey
Ай бұрын
@@ROTTERtube I agree UV won’t save anyones tank from an outbreak. If you have a 150 gallon reef tank with 10 very large fish in the throes of a bad ich outbreak then no, - UV wont do anything. But that doesn’t mean it cant prevent one, when the conditions are very favourable IMO. With only 4 small fish in an 80 gallon with plenty of circulation continuously moving the water into the sump where a UV rated for 200 gallons is sterilising the theronts going through, I am hoping it does enough to stop the ich getting too much for the fish to cause an outbreak. The tank is only 80 gallons and at least 150 gallons is going through the UV every hour. Some “lucky” people do have tanks for a decade without an ich outbreak and having never treated with copper or a UV. At the very least I should have 80-90% less ich in my tank than these people. I will do it correctly with copper soonish - just have to organise the house properly.
@Whaleydavey
Ай бұрын
@@ROTTERtube There is a KZitem video from “Cam the Fish Guy”, who owns an aquarium shop. He did manage to control an ich outbreak by installing a giant 6 foot industrial strength UV to a large home reef tank that had a ich outbreak. After 6 weeks, even the tangs showed no sign of ich. Again I agree with you that Copper is the only way to go for most people, and I want to get the QT installed very soon. But I think if you do super overkill with the size of your UV on a very very light bioload of fish - you can possibly prevent an ich outbreak by limiting its concentration. There is ich in the ocean after all. I know this wont work for 99% of people who want to keep more than 4 small fish in a relatively large tank, but there are exceptions. So I agree UV isnt a cure but it may aid in prevention if circumstances are favourable.

I don't use foam because I hate cleaning it. I just have some porous shelf rock in the sump full of beneficial bacteria. Can I use that?
@ROTTERtube
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, glad you like the videos. yes you can use the porous shelf rock that is in your sump. once you put it in the quarantine tank you will never be able to use it again in your main tank. this is because copper will be all in that rock. copper can't be in a tank where there are corals and inverts. if you're ok with that, use it. it will work. test your water for ammonia still with an ammonia badge. i use a sponge that has been sitting in the sump since i don't care about throwing it out when done. some people keep their quarantine tanks running all the time so they just leave the sponge in there. no sand. you don't want to give the parasites places to encrust to.

@ROTTERtube

hi, you can use a bowl and if you want you can use sand at the bottom. the reason for no sand is to the parasites will have nowhere to cling to if it’s just glass. but, when they hatch after 30 days, the copper will kill them, which is why you need 6 weeks minimum.
@OperationDx1

This is probably the only way. But a combination of other methods is helpful. Heat does speed up the Ich cycle. Hypo-salinity will reduce the number of survivors. Also add seachem prime with water changes in the QT so ammonia won't harm your fish. In the main tank blast the heat to 90 degrees Fahrenheit for about a week. Then bring it back down after a total of 4 weeks the main tank should be clear. But it does not hurt to go two more weeks. Only some inverts can tolerate the heat so you may want to move them to a different tank.
@ROTTERtube

these all sound like a good idea but did you know that prime and cupramine together is deadly? it is. hyposalinity doesn't help much at all and neither does heat unless you bake it to at least 100.
