Oh yeah! Scarves are great as first projects, and shawls are wonderful for learning shaping. Also, don't be intimidated by cable or lace patterns; they're easier than they look (especially Orenburg and Estonian lace since you always get a rest row)
@NimbleNeedles

It sure is. I mean, not gonna lie to you..shawls can be incredibly complex. But to start out...there are some great, great beginner patterns. In fact, I am inclinded to say that the simplier the pattern, the better it looks around your neck. Knit a simple triangular shawl in garter stitch, use a stunning colorway (not too busy but maybe with some speckles), and then add some tassles in a contrasting yarn and it will look amazing. And the best part, you could go up one or two needle sizes and it will look a bit lazier and is faster to finish! :)

You are such a good teacher. I have been struggling with garter tab cast ons for 2 years, and you just fixed every issue I ever had with them in about 10 minutes. I cannot believe no one ever told me I could just use a crochet hook and my active yarn to just pull up the stitches I needed! And I've been picking up stitches along the side of the tab completely incorrectly, too. You make it all so clear, thank you so much for making these videos.

My first shawl which was one of my first ever knitting project deserves a place here I think. The construction was very easy.. It results in a triangle shape that is not a rectangle triangle but is flatter, with longer sharper points. It starts sorta sideways at one sharp point of the triangle, then (with right side facing you) you make 1st row, 1 increase on the left, 3rd row 2 increases on the left. On the wrong side, you'll knit the 2nd row and then knit the 4th and do a decrease on the left side. And repeat these 4 rows. This will result in a rapid increase on one side and a slow decrease on the other, making a slanting piece. You can continue until it's as long as you want it. The original pattern added other features but that's the gist of the construction. And your last row will be one of the even sides of your triangle while the side with the double increases will be the longer "neck side". It's hard to explain, I'm sure you'd do a much better job at it than me. The original pattern is available for free on ravelry as a DROP pattern.
@DoeMeNeek
4 ай бұрын
Cool! So... on the "wrong" side, row 2 does not have a decrease? So a total of 3 increases on "right side" in rows 1 and 3,, and a total of 1 decrease on wrong side? Does that sound right sound right? I wanna try this!
@DoeMeNeek
4 ай бұрын
Okok, questions for Norman and wildfireswildfires6792... it sounds like the difference btwn WFWF's pattern and Norman's asymmetrical is WFWF has the increases on the right side and decreases on wrong, and also has 3 increase to every 1 decrease so grows by 2 stitches each row, while Norman's has increases and decreases both on right side, and grows by 1 stitch each right side row? So... main difference is WFWF's is... more asymmetrical if im reading it right?
@wildfireswildfires6792
4 ай бұрын
@@DoeMeNeek sounds right. The stitch is... Darn, can't remember the name. The easiest one where you always knit. Increases are yarn overs, creating lacey holes on one side and knit 2 together for decreases.
@wildfireswildfires6792
4 ай бұрын
@@DoeMeNeek I would suggest doing colour stripes or using an ombre yarn, that'll make the sideways look pop
@wildfireswildfires6792
4 ай бұрын
@@DoeMeNeek not sure. (It's not "my pattern" btw, it's a drops pattern you can find in ravelry for free). "Mine" actually increases 1 stitch in every 4 rows and makes the whole slant left wise

Thank you for your expertise, and generosity in sharing your very accessible patterns! For years whenever I fell in love with a yarn I would buy one skein and many hand spun, hand dyed yarns joined my stash. My happiest project was a gorgeous mohair hand dye “art” yarn and after too long worshiping the yarn one day I grabbed my size 13 needles and cast on the simplest garter stitch shawl. My treasured yarn sang in this simplest of stitches. I received more compliments than any lace, cabled or fair isle projects. Thank you again for your inspiration!

As always, your instructions not only make it clear but also make the reasons for each change clear too. When I made my first shawl, I was so frustrated that it wasn't a point - turns out I was knitting top down and didn't understand that for quite a while. At that point, my ignorance of the basic construction became funny and that shawl is now a work horse; meaning it functions as I'd hoped but I'd like longer tails. So thanks to your tutorial, I feel confident that picking up stitches and adding a few inches to the top will give me what I want from it. Thank you. By the way; that's a very dramatic wall behind you - it makes a lovely backdrop. Bold but not distracting. Very elegant and appropriate for your style.

Superb instructions as always. Now I understand the various types of construction. You have especially helped me with these garter stitch triangle starts. I understand now that the reason to start a shawl like this appears to be to have a stronger or longer foundation for the borders and center. One thing that gets me into trouble are the top down shawls with hundreds of cast in stitches...is there a cast in that is easier to see and keep from twisting? After 290 cast stitches I always get them twisted as I work on circular needles. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated. You are and excellent instructor and I look forward to your videos very much so. Best regards from USA.

well, that is indeed a difficult issue - especially if it's a cast-on that doesn't create a first row in the same breath. I personally try to avoid thtese situations, haha! :) so, sadly I don't have any real tip for you here. I mean, after I cast-on i just kind of follow the cast-on with my fingers and feel if it's twisted. But that's much easier to do with a longtail cast-on than a single caston

I have never been a shawl person as the patterns I came across always seemed a bit 'oma'-ish. I always preferred a simple straight scarf, but this pattern you created looks both simple and stylish. The black one suits my slightly goth aesthetic. :'D Danke sehr, Norman! I found my next project. :)

heh. same here. Definitely not a person for a granny square or doily kind of shawl either. But I guess, that's why I ended up with this design ^^

Wow! Thanks, Norman, for a basketfull of shawl shapes! I enjoy watching you knit, so neat and explanatory. Love your new studio, that blue 'packs a punch'! Your shawl is very attractive__maybe I'll try that with a hand-dyed skein I bought just cuz it's pretty. It has a gorgeous red, white, some moss green and a nice brown. Yep, that sounds like a plan! Hope you're having a lovely day. 🙏😇✨💫🌱🌿🌻🐝🌳🌎💖🙌😺

Hi Norman. Binge-watching your vids, playing catch up...getting the knitting bug again. Love your tutorials, absolutely fantastic and easy to follow. 💕I want to learn Continental knitting. Looks much easier on the hands. Thanks for all you do.

it certainly can be faster but doesn't have to be. Tho, for someone who crochets it's typically easier as you tension the yarn with the same hand.

@@NimbleNeedles Thanks so much! That's what it looked like to me, the same hand / less involvement, with a more natural flow & movement. Also hoping helpful to minimize arthritis, aggravated by certain repetition. I had hand & little finger surgery a few days ago, right where my hook hits, ugh, and going through crochet withdrawals! Thought of picking up my needles, see if more doable for now.

This video is so inspiring. I’m a seasoned knitter and I have seen how to shawl videos before. This video liberates me and makes me think how I can use some beautiful but single skeins of hand dyed yarn to really good effect. Also thinking about becoming a patreon member. Either way I’m getting your pattern to show some love and to add that lacy shawl to my wardrobe.
