I am nervous about becoming a UX designer, and am wondering if IT might be a better path for me since it's more independent. These videos are helpful, thank you. I do work well with others in real life but I tend to get burnt out when communicating with too many people at once online. This is something I may be able to train myself out of though.

Thanks for the feedback Florence. Nervousness is natural when we pursue anything new. I go through it all the time as well. If we want the things we want bad enough, sometimes we have to mentally push ourselves through the fears. Easier said than done. I’m curious, when you say independent, what are you referring to?

If you are talking about development when you say IT, know that it is pretty hard, not impossible, but hard.. and is a constant challenge to keep up with the latest tech...what is hot/relevant changes every few years... It is very male dominated, so if you are a woman that gets old...yes, it is likely more independent depending on the company culture, you will need to attend some meetings as a developer but unless you are a Lead your day should not be filled with them. Development is not good if you want to do more part-time work, multiple gigs at once etc. (unless, I guess, if you are extremely talented). What sucks most about development is there being a bug in production and YOU have to figure out what is wrong and fix it under deadline...that is big time pressure...it is not for the faint of heart...I think that is one reason why it is male dominated...there can be a battle mentality to it, when it gets intense like that.. not battling each other but sense of being in the trenches together... On the plus side, lots of job security, unless there is a serious economic recession. I've never had to have 'a connection' to get work.

I'm a psychology master's student looking to launch my career in UX upon graduation. I'm already going through free tutorials on KZitem and it has given me a fairly good idea of what is involved in UX. What might be some good sources to learn UX Design in depth from?

UX Design is broad. If you’ve learned much from KZitem, what area of UX would you want to lean in to based on what you’ve learned so far?

Hey man thanks for the insight. So funny you brought up transitioning from teaching to UX. I recently completed my teaching school practicum and decided it wasn't the career path for me. Now I am looking into transitioning into UX. Do you have any advice on whether or not bootcamps like Springboard or Career Foundry are worth it? I am considering signing up but I also know many people are self taught

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you gained the self awareness through that experience. I actually went to General Assembly's bootcamp back in 2014. I'm assuming for you, worth it, would mean getting a job in the field...I personally don't know any folks in my network who went through those programs so I can't speak to the success of going through those you mentioned. I do know through experience, that getting your first job in UX is tough! And I also know there are a ton of bootcamps out there now. Its a risk to invest a serious amount of money in to those experiences especially in these times, so weight how that expense fits in to your life. But if you can, go for it! You gain a network, you learn with others and you get a starting point that can build a foundation of the basics. Being self taught has its own challenges and it can be overwhelming for some. If you have the drive and the hustle to put in the effort it takes (which is a ton), that's a good option as well. I find that the bigger companies, still prefer a degree in HCI at the moment for Junior folks, that could change over time. Smaller comps would be more willing to take on hiring a UXer from a bootcamp, especially if they've never hired one before....that's a whole other challenge! Hope this helps!

Wow! Same for me, I decided that teaching English wasn't for me and now I'm learning UX design, digital marketing and a little bit of programming.

I had never heard about it until your comment. I just checked it out! Thanks for sharing. Google definitely knows a lot about UX. Depends on your goal...if you’re looking to gain knowledge, great. Looking to their program for aspirations toward job opportunities? Not sure how successful the program is in that area. Maybe reach out to some one who’s taken it to get their experience. My POV is that any online course that helps you gain more education on a subject matter is worth the time, if you can make it, especially if it helps you make a decision on what to do next. Whether that’s to pursue the path or not. It’s all a learning step toward self awareness. Education is power.
