I'm just accepting that I probably have ADHD. I don't need to see a doctor, I'm fine with just self diagnosis because in the end it doesn't matter - but it does explain a lot of things to myself. And kind of knowing this is why I can't do things like follow recipes due to forgetting what step 1 is while trying to do step 1 helps - I kind of understand this is a structural limitation of my brain and I can stop beating myself up over it. I'm also WAY more aware of the fact that I'm always trying to do a dozen things at the same time, and I can kind of focus a little better when I'm aware I'm doing this. So yeah, I'm fine with my self diagnosis. It helps explains how my brain works and gives me some extra tools to manage it.

I'd love to hear how things have been going for you. I'm 38, and was diagnosed last year, have been taking my meds consistently, and one of the things that struck me after adjusting to them was the clarity. The simple ability to have a thought, and retain it, have thoughts about it, come back to it. I didn't even understand that the brain *could* work that way. I spent so long just existing in the tangled web of my own thoughts I assumed everyone worked that way, that I just lacked some aspect of self-control that would allow me to be a 'normal' person.

My best friend that I love more than anything is not talking to me anymore because I’m so annoying and I always say things that I instantly regret. I feel like anyone and everyone around me dislikes me because of everything I do. I’m also struggling with severe anxiety and crippling depression, and I’m in a never ending rollercoaster of self deprication and belittlement. My mom is a nurse practitioner so I thought she would understand and let me see a doctor about getting diagnosed, but she just says, “I don’t want my child being loaded up with drugs” I told her that getting diagnosed doesn’t necessarily involve medication, and atleast knowing will help. I know no one is probably going to see this, I just wanted somewhere to rant.

My third psychiatrist (who I was seeing for depression) randomly mentioned that I might have ADHD, but then said that at least one of my other psychiatrists should have noticed it if I have it and then just went off on to another subject. I have thought about it a lot and I definitely have a lot of the symptoms. I want to be assessed for it but I am afraid of seeming like an attention seeker, even dough my friends (who have ADHD) think I have it too because of the way I, for example, hyperfocus on something in conversations, take over the entire conversation and ramble on and on for a really long time. Even now I am procrastinating by writing this, as I should be practising for the exam I have tomorrow... Also, I imagine people will think that I cannot have ADHD because I am a graduate student majoring in English, and have ok grades.

You can totally be a graduate student and have ADHD - there are PhD students and even professors with ADHD. I got a degree myself though couldn’t focus enough to finish two masters courses (in totally different subjects) in my twenties. Look up the diagnostic criteria and see you fit. I soooo wish I’d realised and got diagnosed younger than my early 40s as a lot of my life is a mess and the medication for ADHD significantly helps 92% of those that take it.

I would bite my nails, always tap a pencil or click my pen, couldn’t sit still in a chair or shake my leg the whole time I sat. I stopped doing these things but the leg shaking is still present, but I notice it now. I love my hyper focus because in case of an emergency…I am prepared 😂 I can have a conversation with a friend in a loud place but then unwillingly my ears tune out and tune into another conversation near me. Is it possible that somewhere deep in the subconscious mind there is resistance to trying to control or reverse the effects of ADHD? Someone older like myself (age 70) having lived my whole life ignorant of ADHD but not the aftereffects of when I seriously screwed up. Then I would accept that I have a problem (dammit I did it again) and move on like nothing happened. Now I am aware of my ADD and how it interferes with life every minute of every day. When I try to correct a situation or prevent a screw up, and fail, I become very angry. Angry enough to harm myself by slapping myself or banging my hand against the table because I knocked something over again. I discovered that pain, causes me to reboot and regain control. But I know when the pain leaves, I will screw up again. and again, and again. There was something comforting by not knowing what I did or said. When I was younger and very depressed (because of the ADD) I felt safe at the bottom of the pit because while there, I felt nothing could get any worse, no one could hurt me, and there was nothing for me to screw up. I could not understand why other people treated me like the village idiot, blamed me when something went wrong or tried to make me say or do things for their entertainment. I am now better than when I was younger. Slowly, very slowly gaining control. I have a long, long way to go.

@@Zippy5618 Psychiatrists have an evaluation list of questions to ask you for an adult diagnosis. But before doing that, I would google & research medical articles on lists of ADHD symptoms. Copy a list or two out and check off the symptoms you do see yourself having. Also decide which ones are causing the most problems in functioning in your day-to-day life. This will help in your discussion with the doctor who can diagnose what is going on.

I have decided from watching this and another video, that some big questions in my life may actually have an answer. Questions like; why I can't drive a car because my brain seems to wander off in the act, and I lose focus on that I am driving; why I get so focused on something that it feels like someone is pulling my skin when they try to get my attention away from the thing I am focusing on; why I only enjoy creative things and people talking about topics that engage my intelligence and everything else feels like I am lost - and so forth. Until I get a diagnosis, I am not sure, but from these videos it seems to me that ADHD would explain a lot of things. Thank you for making this. It may be my first stepping stop to getting some clarity about these things that plague me, and make me feel like a failure most of the time.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, 1985.. But the medicine just made me"sleepy" and my mom was told I would have figure it out on my own without medicine or guidance. So, elementary, junior high and high school was horrible. But I survived through much trial and error. But lately I've had trouble controlling it. One specialist said it was depression and had trying a new depression medicine every two weeks. It had painful effects on me physically and mentally. Then I gave up on professional help. But with encouragement from my wife and watching your videos and other brains ADHD videos, I went and found a ADHD specialist. I was re-diagnosed with ADHD... I can't tell you how much a weight was lifted off my chest. Thank you Jessica and Edward. Thank you so much. Please keep up the good work. Sorry for the post. :)

Current Dr’s will not diagnose me with ADHD they want me to handle my PTSD but none of the meds for depression would help or had terrible side effects. I went to a different provider and bam he was like let’s try the ADHD meds. I was like a new person. Now don’t get me wrong I am still in therapy for my PTSD, depression and anxiety, but it’s so much easier to follow and understand my therapy now and how to apply it.

I got diagnosed with ADHD at age 7 and still haven't done anything about it in 7 years. My parents think that it will not be good for me but I have a serious problem studying and stuff.
@alienstrange
3 жыл бұрын
That sounds normal. Most people have a hard time with studying. That doesn’t automatically make you ADHD. It’s essentially judged based on daily symptoms that create roadblocks in your way consistently. Depending on where you are on the spectrum there are many tests you can do or self observations that you could apply to decide if you think you are ADHD and then have friends and/or family chime in on their opinion, then doctor. I am obviously adhd, but not everyone is so obvious. Although, being a bit scatter brained, hard of focus... are not necessarily signs of ADHD. It’s considered more of an executive function challenge rather than a focus challenge.

@@olymolly3637 sometimes it still feels like we are just lazy and procrastinating because we have been told all our lives that we are. you can tell if you really are, if it feels like a choice or not. are you consciously making the choice--i'm going to be lazy and do that later? are you able to stop at any point and make the choice NOT to be lazy? if you really tried, would you be able to get things done on a REGULAR basis, not just once and a while success? if you are consistently making attempts to not be lazy, but you are still not succeeding at doing anything much, then it is probably a Asperger's or ADHD or both and you should not judge yourself, and seek the appropriate treatments you need to get things done. people with these thought disorganization problems get a lot of criticism and shame because people do not understand what its like, or that we are really trying our best.
@olymolly3637

@@DA-li6dp that's so true. I always doubt & condemn myself when most things didn't work for me, especially the things people expect of me. I prefer my own choices but some people can't accept that. Currently I'm trying to correct myself & my procrastinating habits (i admit I have that) by starting to work again. But I hope I won't burn out from overworking like the last few times. Edit: Thank you so much for your serious & detailed feedback. I'll keep them in mind. I think I need to seek a professional too.
