I have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation - my episodes usually last anywhere from six to twelve hours, and it feels like an off-rhythm. Almost as suddenly as the afib comes on, they end just as suddenly in sinus rhythm. I was in the hospital when it happened - no symptoms, but my atrial rate was 340 (!) and pulse 147, so they soft-coded me and the nurses gave me IV metoprolol to bring the rate down and heparin to prevent clots. That seemed to help for a bit, but the pulse was still high. After a dose of metoprolol tartrate (fast acting), the nurses were beyond thrilled when I went from A-Fib to sinus rhythm after six hours!

I am one who is very symptomatic with AF. I have to laugh every time someone asks me how I know I’m in AF. I stopped in to my cardiologist’s office to schedule a cardioversion, and the receptionist asked me who told me I was in AF. Umm, 30 years of having these exact symptoms, putting my fingers on my pulse, checking with my Kardia.

How did the cardioversion go?

@@mario-ly9mk I am now in permanent AF, so no more cardioversions for me. I've had an a/v node ablation along with a pacemaker implant. So I'm no longer symptomatic, but I'm always in AF.

@@mario-ly9mk Are you in permanent, persistent or paroxysmal AF? The goal is to stay out of AF through meds or ablations. If those fail you, then you will need a way to convert back to normal sinus rhythm, either through meds, cardioversion or sometimes yoga/meditation works for people. If you are in permanent AF, then the only way to get rid of your symptoms is to go with the final A/V node ablation and pacemaker. It's not a decision to take lightly because this will make you 100% dependent on a pacemaker. So depending on where you are in your journey - your age, your time in AF, the number of years you've had issues, your health and the number of solutions you've failed, will help you and your doctor decide the best path for you. Most importantly, don't be terrified of AF. It is not life threatening, in most cases. Usually the only problem is when your heart converts back to a normal rhythm, you can throw a clot, so that's why anti-coagulants are so important. Your doctor can determine if your episodes are long enough (usually over 36 hours) to require an anti-coagulant. Ordinarily there's no issue if you have infrequent and short lived episodes of AF.

@@bimiup1 I’m 18. My palpitations were caused by me running with a heavy bag 3 days ago. I felt something in my heart pull and now I don’t know what to do. I am also very dizzy and I feel numbness in my jaw, my face and my feet. My hands are also clammy. I find it difficult to sleep now
