You are such a BOSS! (good thing!) Wish CSW2020 wasn't canceled I was so looking forward to it. This video was a masterclass. And I learned the answer a question I've been wondering about: when comping the 3rd & 7th, what to do with a 6 chord? Well you answered it, just comp the 3rd and 6th for that one (otherwise Am6/D7 wouldn't have the same inner voices). Much love to you!

Ironically - I feel like sort of benefiting from CSW2020 having been canceled because there instead is now the Creative String Online Workshop, aka the boot camp. The online format allows me and many others to attend, regardless of location. The learning is fun and intense and I am very grateful for the opportunity :-)

Brilliant! I am attending the boot camp right now and this indeed is one of the core concepts I start learning, so important! For me it will take a while to dissect each chord on the fly and turn it into arpeggios or play 3rds and 7ths without thinking etc. but it is only a matter of doing it and lots of practice. Wonderful video summing it all up thank you Chris! And the boot camp is awesome too!

when you say "land on the chord notes" do you mean the notes of your riffs literally end on a chord note?
@ChristianHowesViolin

Land on the downbeat of the chord on a chord tone. This is a simplification of how music works but it is an excellent exercise to begin w tonal improvisation

@@ChristianHowesViolin so thats what "implying a chord progression" essentially means. you ensure that you are playing a chord tone at every down beat. I hope I got that right.

What does comping mean? Is that the chord progression?

short for "accompaniment". But in this context it refers to the "inner voices" aka the rhythm guitar part. I try to simplify the arrangement in terms of three things 1) bass line 2) inner voices 3) melody
