For anybody attempting this job on their own, I've watched tons of videos about lapping bc im going to try it myself and this guy's video gave me the most confidence and answered my question of using a drill or not. I'm not, this doesn't seem too bad to do with the hand tool and I have 24 of them to do

Nice work! I definitely prefer hand lapping over the electric drill method - you can't hear the subtle change when you're running a drill. One minor suggestion: make sure to put some oil on the valve stem so you're not running it dry in the valve guide.

Ah yes, not a bad idea at all! Mine were still somewhat oily from the tear down but it certainly would help to oil up the stem a bit, good idea.

Agreed, great video. Also be VERY careful to keep the grinding compound far from the valve guides. Any grit in there can wipe out your valve and guide.

Nice. It's easy to get lured into the drill and hose technique, but there's no substitute for working the valve from the face. Plus, you can hear the sound change.

Poured Isopropyl alcohol in the Subi ports, no drain. Rotated crank, no timing belt, to get compression and like a fart in the bathtub on every valve. Syked I finally get to use my lapping kit! Great video. Went from apprehensive to excited. Thanks

Worth noting for those who want to use a drill for this, that there are cheap attachments for a drill that automatically make the back and forth motion opposed to just spinning the valve in one direction.

This seems to be the easiest procedure to understand. I'm in the process of rebuilding a stock 4.9L 300 cubic inch inline 6 and it's already in great shape compared to the one the truck came with.

Hi , I used to be a automotive machinist in the 80s and 90s , you will find it easier to get that fat lapping stick turned down alot thinner to a smaller diameter and concave shape where hold it ,also some head stands with some wood to get your valve vertical is nicer . Cheers

Nice. Just one recommendation. I would not "stamp" a valve. The impact of stamping can cause microscopic damage which can then propagate into cracks under the high stresses and temperatures of combustion.

@@jacobfranklin820 I imagine the stamp is akin to an ink, and that the engine at operating temp will simply burn it out. Maybe if you mark it with a knife, but I can't imagine a pen or sharpy could do any damage, let alone more than the thermodynamic cycle

lapping done the right way, for take rid of minor machining defects and disposits, definitely not for digging the valve in its seat as any ridge caused by heavy lapping will cause leaks at operating temperature as the the lapping is done when the valves are cold.

My car started makeing a clicking noise from the valves. I took it apart re seated the valves and its gone it had a lot of gunk on the valve and the seat was just black this helped a lot.

Just wanted to say "Thanks for posting". I've working on our 99 XJ. Took valve and springs off. With 235k mile, figured I could try cleaning the valves. Didn't have too much pitting. How should the stem be cleaned? Thanks.

Don't stamp numbers on valve heads. It holds carbon in divots. Use a Sharpie or marker paint. Very correct description though of sound change. Put sucker on valve first - shown method squeezes out compound and wastes it. PUT A LIGHT SPRING UNDER THE VALVE HEAD !

Brandon, if they aren't clean they won't stick that well. make sure the carbon is off the valves, that should help.

I spent today lapping a cylinder head from a 6.4 ford diesel. I cleaned the entire cylinder head. Removed all carbon. Purchased new intake and exhaust valves. There 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. I lapped the valves using the hand tool and lapping compound mixed with grease from Permatex (it comes premixed). I doubled checked my work after finishing the cylinder head using water into the ports. Some water flows from the valves. A couple of drops here and there. The valve seats and the valves sealing surface looks perfect. Is this normal after lapping a cylinder head.

From the future,lol: No,No and No!!! you must have ZERO leaks ,with water; Maybe bent valves,or very bad seats,due to prior severe overheating of the head(engine); valves you can buy,seats must be done in the machine shop; In the end,ALWAYS check for leaks with gasoline or alcohol,not water; water is not a penetrating enough liquid for this.

It's a good idea to do this on old and new valves. It just makes the surfaced mate together better.

Pop that rubber suction cup off.. stick in on your drill.. then spin slow and do same method as by hand.....

I always inspect the valves and see. Look for how straight they are, if there's any significant burn marks or pitting alone the sealing edge. I do this process even with brand new valves just to make sure and visually inspect the two mating surfaces. I want to be sure they are going seal up well.

If it's the same size, you can replace just one. If you are going up to say 1mm over, then you need to do them all. Why do you need to do just one? Melt it a bit?

So i have a head im rebuilding, all the valves got polled and cleaned and put back into the same port. There is alittle bit of light leaking but its minor. Will lapping help ?

It matches the seat surface to the valve. I suppose it really depends on if you have freshly cut the seats to match the valves or not. It wouldn't hurt but it may not be necessary.

This may be a obvious thing to do but I'm 18 and attempting my first Ls swap in my nova but do you have to keep each valve to its respecting seat? I'm planning to lap them like this and port them. They are 799 heads.

I've heard grinding each valve for 5 mins. Is it nec.? Also after I lapped my valves, they unexpectedly leaked much more than before. Any suggestions?

I've not run into that before. You should be able to see where you're lapping them on both the valve and the seat. Is there any pitting marks on either that would allow them to leak?

@@renejacques8288 I'd say it has to be leaking from somewhere else. Perhaps the seats themselves? I'm not sure. When you have the head out, with the valves closed, put water in there and see if it leaks past the valves. Then just look for where it's coming from. Sounds like you have something else going on to me but you know your setup. Let me know what you find out.

I looked at some valves w/ a magnifying glass and I see pits that are more pronounced along the upper and lower edges of the valve mating surfaces. Surprisingly the exhaust valves look better than the intake valves. The motor mating surfaces seem to look better than the valves'. Please reply.

@@renejacques8288 Sounds like you need more than just a valve lapping at this point. I'd suggest taking it to a machine shop and see if they can regrind the valves and seats. It may just be time for new valves. Good luck!

I notice that the grinding paste has coarse one end and fine the other. Do you start with the coarse and then progress onto the fine? Or, is fine good enough for most applications where pitting can't be seen in the seat and the valve is new?

I just use the one. I suppose you could use both but you really want to test the valves for complete sealing either way. The good old water test is great once you have the springs back in.

How can you check that the valves are seating properly? Water? If a drop leaks by in a few seconds, is that ok or do you need to lap more until no drops appear?

Yes, exactly right. You do want the springs on there as well. They should be sealing 100% with the water test and springs installed. I usually pour the water down the intake or exhaust side so it's easier to see as well.

Yes, with the springs installed. Also, don't use water, it isn't thin enough of a fluid. Use gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, or alcohol because they're MUCH thinner and will show leaks more readily. Whereas water won't show very slight leaks and may give you a false sense of it being sealed when there's actually a very minor leak still (which is lost power, reduced fuel economy, and eventually leading to the valve failing quicker).

Desert Rider I use carb cleaner. Sometimes it has to soak overnight, then a brass brush on the valves and a soft vinyl brush on the heads.

boostedsil40 I done a valve lapping job on my motor out of my E30 and had a minor leak from only one intake valve. When I put the head back onto the block the engine refused to run. I also only had 100psi compression on every cylinder. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be around 150. Got the head out again Rn and trying to redo it but might just take it to get it machines if i can’t manage to fix it.
