I hear a lot of people say how they are confused about which way to turn the steering wheel of their vehicle when backing their trailer up. Here's a good way to remember and it doesn't take a lot of thought to do it. Hold the Bottom of the steering wheel when backing and turn the steering wheel the direction you want your trailer to go.

I once visited a marina years on the St Lawrence where a local "business" had sprung up. the local highschool kids would help launch,. tie down and watch over boats for tips.

Another important thing to do is OFFER TO HELP OTHERS. If you can see someone is struggling ask them if they need help to get the boat off the trailer or hold it while they move their car. The faster they get off the ramp, the faster you get in the water yourself.

Nice vid and I see people almost everytime at the ramp who could benefit from this. Its amazing how many people have no common sense at all. And to Jmichael, I had a guy threaten me once because I moved his 20yr old jet ski that he left "beached" on the concrete of a single lane ramp so I could launch before he got back from stepping into the portolet before returning to his vessel. Unreal.

A good practice to get into is checking your bilge upon launching. Something we do at the boatyard for every boat we put in. Just in case a hose has come off a fitting somewhere or you missed a plug. It has happened before.

Nice job - but I would be sure the battery and motor work BEFORE driving to the launch area (garden hose attached to cooling water intake can keep motor cool while you make sure it runs).

Only thing I disagree with is that the ramp is NOT the place to be checking your batteries, do that the night before you go out so you can charge if needed.
@Bayoucat58

This is right on myself i never leave the drive way before a quick bump of the motor to assure i have power. I can not charge the battery's. if needed at the ramp. Not being a smart azz just saying i agree 100% with you on this practice.

Very good,80% of boaters hold up people at the ramp. Those loading into a current instead of a harbor or Marina out of the current are/a nightmare.

I would only add, to take the boat OUT to the furthest point on the dock, that way, while you put your truck away (which may take a little bit of time), the next guy in line can launch. I have seen countless times where the guy, after launching then ties up RIGHT THERE, blocking the next guy from launching. then we all sit there waiting for him to come back to move his boat. Of course, you have every right to untie and slide his boat back, but then it's "don't touch my boat" time.

I am a little guilty of holding up the line at the boat dock while unloading. Not because I don't have my shit together, but because my boat is 28 years old, and that old volvo 4 cylinder has no choke, and has to run a couple of minutes before she will go...lol

Correct! Boating or not, being considerate is the entire issue. I've launched my boat and jet skis and without making myself or anyone else nuts, I prepare and there's no reason for anyone to be at the dock for more than 2 minutes if you're alone. Tie up, park and then come back. With one other person, it's literally seconds.
