What you have here is sometimes referred to as a "ring around". Homes built on a slab. Gravel will be shot into the "hole" to level out the ground then concrete with wire poured to the top of the block that are used like a form. For the naysayers, on the comments, depending on where you are at the "code" is different and your allowed to make adjustments. It's called "humoring" as in funny. The fact that he adjusted to the footer being off without any trouble comes from experience. There is a saying in the trade that he's a "mechanic". Mechanics don't panic. Their the ones who get the call for stuff like that. Been a mason over 40 years and his work was fine. Just an observation, looked to be a "side job". He said he'd done one down the road so he's picking up work at this development.

Hey my dude, just subbed to ya a few days back because im about to build my first retaining wall. First time doing block work as well. To be honest, my commonsense, along with all the errors of it, is all i had to go on before checking out your videos. After four videos, i know im not ready. But starting the job tomorrow. Im more of an interior tradesman. Tile, framing, plumbing, etc... The client is fully aware of my level of knowledge and the invoice reflects these limitations. This wall is to act as a seawall to some extent and will be 25 foot long. ANY practical advise would greatly be appreciated. By practical, in this situation, i mean to say, "can be done by one man in 6 days" with 1000$ in materials. I am about to upload a video of it on you tube. Im not a content creator of any sort. My videos are for my own documentation and reflection, and for the benifit of clients.

Hi there how many courses high? If this is to hold back water I would recommend filling it solid and also giving it time to cure before putting water against it.....just my thoughts. If you haven't laid block before it will be a challenge. The key is to make sure it stays level.
@michaelgilkerson1361

@@RealityisaComedy the wall will be five, maybe six courses high. It won't be a seawall actually, i mispoke, but will be holding the Earth back from falling towards the river. The home is at the top of the bank and it is about a 40 foot elevation change at a 45 degree incilne. I plan on putting rebar in every other cell, 90d that the bottom into the footer and stub up through the cells. Every couple of courses I will lay a horizontal rebar the length of the wall and do a horizontal rebar on the top lentil course and backfill all the cells containing rebar with mud. 140 blocks minimun gotta tote it all alone from the street . Ill record some of my progess tomorrow or wednesday. Handling logistics of other jobs while tackling this job.

Is the string for elevation, or alignment? Is for elevation (making sure the blocks are at the correct elevation) how do you keep the line from sagging?.

Scott Tillman Pull the line tight with the wood blocks. I can do a video on that when I get some time. The line is to keep all block the same height. I LOVE the line "Time to get a new laser"!!! No matter how tight you pull your line,braided is the best and strongest however the most expensive, the line can develop a swail from the weight of the line itself. There is a "toy" called a trig made of metal that you can use in the middle of the wall to bring it to the right height. Note, you have to be VERY CAREFUL that you do it right or your wall could end up with a hump,swail or a bow in the wall. Checking the height on occasion is ALWAYS a good idea.

Ok after watching the garage episode I’m not impressed anymore. How hard would it be to hold the strap and then fill up the hole? And WOULDNT it be better if the strap was in the footing and threw the block
@RealityisaComedy
4 жыл бұрын
BILL C Trying to find a contractor to lay it out perfectly so that the straps will land correctly in the block is difficult. At least around here. For my footings we place vertical #4 or #5 bar in footings through block every 32” to 48” on center depending on the project. You fill block and then place straps. It would not be productive to hold a strap while filling a block and it would not make it any more effective.

Do you always use a level on top of each block you lay? And if you do, do you do it on taller block walls.
@RealityisaComedy

Yes, I always use a level. You can also go with your string line as you go up. Make sure you have a string line from one side of the wall to the other that is level with where the top of block will be.

Reality is a Comedy Yes I understand you lay to a level line. But I notice you place a small level on top of each block. Instead of just laying to your line and keep going

You said it some what level the carpenter is going to have a hell of a time
@RealityisaComedy

The foundation was somewhat level -- my block is level so the carpenter will be okay. Not always fun though -- sometimes if the footing is not level I will have to saw cut my block.

Whats that hurricane strap gonna do in a dinky little 6" block that isn't even doweled into the footing?
@RealityisaComedy

The hurricane strap is in the footing -- they are long straps they are not just in the block. In our state our footings are over 3 foot deep and the straps are anchored in the footings.

I should also add that we are located far away from any hurricanes and until 2015, no one used them. In my opinion they are not necessary.

What is hurricane straps ? Don't have hurricanes in Sweden
@RealityisaComedy

They are expensive steel straps about 3 feet long. We don’t have hurricanes here either but they make us use them on each side of the garage door. It is all about money. How are you doing during this time? Does your country have the virus? God bless you friend.

Oh I see! Thank you for explaining. Well if you listen to media we are all already dead. its serious but people are okey, it's the old ones that's is in the most danger zone and that sux. I think we are up to 20 deaths, all old and with other types of sicknesses. But I think we are gonna be okey.
