Haha at the beginning of the video he says “the price of energy at the moment is sky high” or something of that nature. I was shocked to see the video was posted 9 years ago! 😂

I would have got the dust and rubble out first. Gets into the insulation and makes the job messy. It's a bit of a ball-ache, but can be done within a couple of days. Would recommend buying a coal fire vacuum to get up the finer particles - cost about £50. Or hire one for the same price for 2 days. Or get a Henry, but don't bother with the bags.

Would be interested to know how long it took to do. (i.e. how many man hours per 50sqm loft)

I recently did my attic at home. It's a little over 50sqm with 4 difficult to access dormer windows. I put in one layer of 100mm top up insulation at 90 degrees to the joists. Working on my own it took me 3 days spending around 4 hours each day.

Not meant to cover electric cables, they should be laid on top, also no mention of leaving 50mm ventilation gap at roof to prevent condensation?
@gavinwilson6658

Is that 50mm in from the edges of the loft?

Can you please elobarate what you mean by 50mm gap? Where should this gap be?
@SF-ze6go

To prevent condensation between the insulation in the rafters you need air flow. Sometimes a gap can be half that depending on materials & building regs where you live. Google it for more in depth, also 'cold vs warm roof' while you're there.

I dont see how you can do it without covering electrical cables at some point. Do you put 300mm+ columns vertically above where the cables go down to the fittings in the bedrooms and then put stretchers inbetween to lay the cables on top. I've just had a re roof and the roofers put in 300mm, I then added a further 170mm over the top but I just covered the cables because otherwise I would have had to rewire everything to accomodate the extra depth of insulation.

We did ours and got reduction of 10 pounds a month in winter out of 70 pounds. So it's 50 pounds a year. Materials cost 1,000 pounds. Did myself in 5 days.

How do you deal with the soffit area? Would I make sure that the insulation is wedged into it or just lay it across the top of it? I have a ceiling which curves down to meet the wall which the soffit sits behind is all, and there are some signs of a little black mould appearing near to where the vents are, visible from the bedroom below. It's only a little, over the course of around the 11 years we've been there, however, I'm dealing with woodworm at the moment and, so, I have taken all the old insulation out such that the joists can have a precautionary spraying is all. I'm now not quite sure what to do with this area
