When I got my first Mac last year I was super fraustrated as to how things worked differently. I watched videos to make Mac work like Windows but most of those apps are buggy (like I installed uBar to get the taskbar but it just sucks) and wasted some money trying this and that. Finally gave up and actually backed up my files and reset my Mac to give a fresh start and do everything the way Apple intended us to do. Six months in and apart from a few minor dissatisfactons Mac OS is actually pleasing to use than Windows

Very helpful. My brother is still using a VERY old Windows machine running Windows 7. I try to make him aware of the security concerns with an OS that is not supported anymore. I'm going to encourage him to replace it with a nice Mac. He can afford it easily. Videos like this will be helpful to him.

The National Health Service (NHS) was attacked my ransomware a few years ago and all because the staff and nurses at every hospital in the UK to access patent records was using Windows XP, which at that point was over a decade old. I thought to myself, this would never happen with macOS because it's not as widely used. It's security oriented and lastly, it's supported a lot longer than Windows.

I've had my MacBook Air for nearly 3 months and I LOVE it. I've had Windows PCs since '03 and have used that OS at work since the 90's (Windows 3.1, 95, etc.). When I switched to Mac, the things that tripped me up were the keyboard, the Menu bar being on the top of the screen instead of the window, and me over-thinking things. I do think already being proficient at iPadOS and iOS helped, but for the first few weeks, I was sneaking back to my slow, but still-functioning HP laptop. 🤣 Finally, I told myself that the only way to become proficient at Mac was to just use it. I made sure everything from my PC was backed up and moved over, then I powered down my HP and put it away in its sleeve out of sight. I have not looked back.💻

All great pieces of advice. When I made the shift I came from Windows 98. OS 8/9 were a total mystery. Then OS 10 arrived..... I tried to learn by using books, such as the "Missing Manual" series by David Pogue. But, while this helped a little, of course was OS specific, and was no help with the various programs ( remember when they were called that? ) that I was running. But every day I would learn by using, and was astonished by just how easy the Mac made this. These days I am still learning. macOS is far more powerful and capable. Seriously though, why change to the Mac if you want it to be like Windows? One of the main reasons to change is the simplicity yet elegance of the OS, compared to what you are leaving. Gary, I often tell folk to look up your channel when they need to learn some Mac thing. This video is one I will definitely recommend. They should take off their waders and dive in.

Great little post! I've had my iMac for years and didn't know about that option feature in the dropdowns because I don't just poke around. I really should do more of that, just pure exploring. I use Windows at work and if I am doing something new (rarely the case) I am a little more comfortable in Windows just because of the time and familiarity. You make a good and reassuring case to find out more - quite motivating.

I just picked up a used iMac for my wife and was thinking about setting it up with macOS, but I wound up installing Windows 10 instead, which she currently uses on her laptop. My main reason, was that this is an older machine that would need to have OCLP installed to use modern versions of macOS and although OCLP is pretty solid (I use it without issue), I thought that it could potentially be a problem in the future. All that said, I've got Windows 10 running on an external USB3 SSD with this late 2013 iMac and it's running really well so far.

Spot on Gary. I switched to MacOS from Windows about a year ago and it was frustrating at first to find how to do something that was second nature on Windows. Having used MacOS now for a year I love it and can't see me ever going back to Windows. Like you said, just keep exploring the OS and the different menus. If you need help with a specific function use Spotlight Search or a web search. I learned so much from watching this channel that it made it so much easier for me to navigate the system and learn new things. Many thanks to Gary for that. And I continue to learn new things about the Mac and IOS pretty much every day. One tip I use to help remember where certain commands are or how to do this or that is using the Stickies app. Great for taking notes like keyboard commands and such and easy to access quickly.

A guess on my part: For users who work in both the Windows and Mac worlds, they probably remain focused on one OS for the majority of their time (like me), but become conversant in both eventually (not me yet, but working on it). Kind of like being bi-lingual. When you learn another language, you tend to first mentally translate the new language into your native language, which slows you down. But eventually you get to the point where you learn to "think" in either language without having to mentally translate. From what I've heard, anyway. Then again, there are words and phrases in one language that are just untranslatable to another, and vice versa. Each OS and ecosystem has their own strengths and weaknesses, just a matter of figuring out how to do what you need to do.

When I transitioned in 2012, I found that a lot of the "Windows ways" weren't relevant and I became frustrated. But, the more I got used to it with time and tips from people, I eventually got it. While Windows was useful, I don't have a lot of the frustrations I had when using Mac. I would spend a fortune on anti-virus software beforehand. 12 years later and using the Mac has been a more productive and delightful experience. It's the way a computer should've worked from the very beginning.

Before ditching your Windows PC, if there are certain files on that PC that you would like immediate access to on your Mac, consider installing a cloud service (like Dropbox) on that PC that is also available on your Mac. Then save selected files on that PC to your cloud service. On your Mac, install that cloud service and use the same user ID and password that you used on the cloud service on your PC. The files that you saved on your PC’s cloud service should then appear on your Mac’s cloud service.

That’s a good idea, but rather than using a third-party app like Dropbox, it would be easier to use iCloud for Windows. Then all your files will be in one place. I used to use Dropbox but found with iCloud there’s really no need for it. In fact, that’s a good general rule for getting the most out of your Mac: If there’s a native Mac app, try that first. For example, I used to use Evernote, but have stitched to Mac Notes. Same with Word vs Pages and Excel vs Numbers.

My number one issue with macOS after using it for 3 years now is window management, especially the close / minimise / maximise behaviour of a window is just terrible and unnecessarily complicated on macOS. I generally rely on shortcuts way more on macOS compared to Windows which generally offers a much richer interface. Having said that I have my issues with Windows too, but in the window management department Windows wins for sure.

Gary, thank you so much for this encouraging video. I've had my new MacBook for about 6 weeks and it's been both frustrating and rewarding. What do you mean by "windows provide lot of free apps but Mac none"? Apple gives you for free: Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, Photos, GarageBand, Freeform. Many others comes as part of macOS like Notes, Reminders, Calendar, TextEdit, etc. There's nothing exactly like Paint, but Preview and Photos do a lot depending on what you are trying to do exactly.
