The beauty of learning Spanish in the US is that there's a darn good chance you'll readily encounter many native speakers near you, who tend, in my experience, to be very happy and gracious when you try to speak their language--but also too polite to correct your errors. It's really striking how quickly you can generate goodwill and amiability by making an effort to speak their language, even if you butcher it. A good accent seems to count for way, way more than proper word choice or grammar where this is concerned.

I’ll begin learning Spanish by taking online lessons at a Barcelona-based language school in less than two weeks. In the meantime I’ve bought a Spanish-Norwegian dictionary for beginner students and had a look at the mid-pages of that, because those usually have useful stuff. Learning grammar is long since familiar to me, since Norwegian schools teach that quite well (having two very distinct written standards for our language makes it easy to teach grammar using our native language for the examples, and we also learn English from an early age), but Spanish will be my first non-Germanic language, which I’m sure will be a fun challenge.

hello dr jones i don't know if you agree, but i would also recommend learning spanish in a romance language, if you already speak one, eg learn spanish using french resources if you already speak french. this way you can notice and memorize similarities, differences, and false friends much more easily. in my case as a bilingual canadian, i noticed that it is much easier to study german in english than in french, simply because german and english are in the same language family and therefore share many cognates. but if i were to study spanish or italian, i would certainly do so in french.

I absolutely agree. My native language is English, but I have lived in the French-speaking part of Switzerland for most of my life, and I have found that studying Spanish and Italian is much easier from the "French" part of my brain than from the "English".

As a native spanish speaker I feel like it may work, but take into account that approaching it from a pronunciation sense (as in "this sound in spanish sounds like this other sound in french") might complicate things for everyone. In my personal experience it's way more complicated to understand someone with a french accent than someone with an english accent, to the point where it's sometimes near unintelligible. This same phenomenon doesn't happen with other romance languages like Italian and especially Portuguese, which is somewhat easy to understand.

@@jorgeporras9262 The only reason I can think of that a French accent would be harder than an English accent (other than Spanish speakers just being more accustomed to the English accent) is that French lacks syllable stress so their intonation sounds quite strange. Other than that, French phonology is a better fit: the a, e, i, o, u sounds are very close to the Spanish equivalents and French doesn't turn everything into a weird diphthong; lacking stress, it also doesn't tend to neutralise unstressed vowels the way that English phonology does (producing stuff like "seperar" instead of "separar"). For anyone who speaks both English and French, it's far better to default to a French way of pronouncing things BUT with syllable stress.

When I finally started learning Spanish a few years ago, I made a playlist of Spanish language songs in genres I liked even if they weren't the corridos my family used to listen to around me. Hearing the same words over and over helped me find where I wanted to expand my vocab. Also most words are repeated many times. If you have a bit advanced vocabulary and you play video games, change the language to your target language and put subtitles on. Pause if you see a new word and put it into your Anki deck. This will help you to learn words in a context. When you study your words you will remember the time and context you stumbled on them.

As you know if you read these comments, we are learning Russian and have some follow-up questions about language acquisition (not Russian specifically, see previous comment in previous video for that). Why does learning a new language (especially many sessions during the day) make me so sleepy/tired? Do we know how much more brainpower (like, % CPU usage) is used in learning a new language vs. native? And does the brain get as tired from listening to shows/tv/podcasts in native language as it does in the new one? I'm listening to kids' shows in Russian, even in the background while I do other computer tasks. This makes me pretty sleepy by the end of the day. It made me wonder: Do we get just as tired listening to native language content (podcasts, shows, youtube) and just don't notice it, or not as tired because the brain has a default "setting"? Ironically, you got aprender A, but it only has the A if there's another verb after it. Eg aprendé a hablar español, but aprendé español. The right preposition is less likely to be part of the explicit vocab and can be hard to focus on when you're reading in your target language. (I'm facing this fiddly-little-word challenge while refreshing my Spanish and learning te reo and the Hawaiian language.) Cheers!

I speak Spanish with a ridiculous mix of accents, due to my history. I grew up in a Mexican-speaking area, learned Spanish from a Mexican, and then an Argentinian, then another Argentinian; now my teacher is an Argentinian from Madrid, and I live in Spain, so I learn new words with a Castellano accent, but many of my 'old' words either sound Mexican or Argentinian (although I have taken the edge off of the Argentine phonology). Sometimes I use a /S/ for the C and sometimes a /th(eta)/. And all with vowels that mark me as an American English native. And no one has any problems understanding me at all. Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good.

I'm also a rare American that didn't take Spanish in school (I took German), but I'm considering trying to learn it since a lot of my friends are native Spanish speakers (Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia) and it'd be nice to be able to speak to them in their own language. Thanks for the advice!

You'll likely find Spanish to be far easier than German in most regards: pronunciation, grammar, spelling, etc.
@Twisted_Logic
Ай бұрын
@@SO-ym3zs I found German spelling and pronunciation pretty simple and straightforward. Grammar wasn't too bad for the most part at the level I was learning (three years in high school), though keeping declensions straight could sometimes be a pain. I can still remember a good amount of it, though my vocabulary has definitely atrophied in the ~15 years of disuse

@@SO-ym3zsBut Spanish grammer isn't particularly easy. Two genders, and sometimes 'el' is used for female words. Conjugation is a total mess (just like French), including many irregular verbs (ir => voy). Pronunciation is fairly regular, but sometimes prepositions like 'a' are completely swallowed. It's at par with German.

¡Estoy estudiando español también! Es mi primero segundo idioma. Empecé a aprender español hace un año, pero ahora, mi español es fatal y no puedo hablar nada con personas (pero, también, estoy demasiado ....um ...nervioso). Tuve un semestre en persona, pero ahora solo uso Duolingo. Quizás voy a intentar lingoda. Yo sé es mas mejor que estudia solo. Si aprendo español, quiero mucho a aprender Tibetano. ¿Crees ese va a ser más fácil si ya tengo un segundo idioma? ¿Hablas algún Tibetano? ¿O, si no, algún idioma en la misma familia? Lol, if you answer this in a few months, I hope my Spanish will be better!!! lol

L'anglais est ma langue maternelle, mais je vais apprendre l'espagnol. Je commencerai avec la phonologie pour maîtriser les éléments fondamentaux et nécessaires pour parler sans accent. Comme vous pouvez voir, il faut toujours raffiner le français mais cela prendra des années. Merci bien pour vos vidéos, et bon courage !

I was somewhat on the cusp of Intermediate level Spanish but that was about 15 years ago and I feel like I've forgotten almost everything. I've never been good at remembering verb conjugations. But anyway, I want to pick it up again and get better at it, so I found two mailing lists that send me Spanish vocabulary and phrases regularly, and two resources for making/exchanging conversation on Zoom - all for free. Of course, the Zoom conversations only help if I regularly show up and I've been sadly lax about that. Oh, and you know what - for beginners, there's always the Destinos series from the 80s which used to be on public television and is still available as videos on the Annenberg Learner website! The 80s fashions provide some extra entertainment! I'm excited for you to be embarking on this endeavor, so hopefully I'll also be inspired to make a better effort myself.

In a couple of months, I would love to hear your impressions of Portuguese after you have a more than conversational level of Spanish if you’re able to reach that in a couple of months. I was a foreign exchange student in Brazil in the 1990s. I still, communicate effectively Portuguese and watch TV sometimes in Portuguese. Once in a while, I’m even forced to try and communicate using Portuguese to native Spanish speaker and if the speaker is patient, we can normally exchange ideas.

These are great because they are focussed on Spanish learners.

Gotta love Spanish, perhaps the easiest language for a native English speaker to learn. You can quickly get fairly competent speaking it, compared to Russian, for instance. Understanding conversation between two native Spanish speakers is more difficult because of the speed and their tendency to turn an entire sentence into one word. Bonus? You’re practically learning Italian at the same time.

1500 hours is really damned impressive. Do you feel like you've acquired enough spanish to "get along" if you were to vacation in Mexico? as is interacting at the airport, hotels, cafés/restaurants, markets....asking for directions, uber/taxis and polite chitchat? Even if those things are at a rudimentary level? I have just started Dreaming Spanish (paid) and I'm trying to set my own expectations at what I should expect at 1500 hours.

This is off-topic, but I think it is a language topic that maybe you have discussed or will discuss sometime. I am trying to understand why words sound better in certain orders like names of businesses or book titles. It seems like shorter words should come first and then long words like Sears & Roebuck and not Roebuck and Sears. I am trying to think of the best order for a few words that I might use for something. What sounds best? Misread, miscopied, and misunderstood. Or Miscopied, misread, and misunderstood. I am sure you are busy so feel free to just ignore the question, but I think it might be a linguistic issue that you might discuss someday.
@betsyw4943
Ай бұрын
Interesting question! I agree on the preference for shorter things first, maybe because it helps the reader/listener identify that they're in a list. I'd suggest that for miscopied, etc., the best order is temporal / logical. So, miscopied, misread, misunderstood if a scribe did the miscopying and then someone later is misreading. But if someone is taking notes on a book, it might be misread, miscopied, then misunderstood. Even if not everyone does all three, it helps to have them in process order.

Por contenido no deberías de tener problemas, mis recomendaciones personales serían: La casa de las flores (has a ton of Mexican humor), La casa de papel (funny they have similar names, but this is much more serious and it is in "Spain Spanish") or Club de Cuervos (one of the best series produced in Mexico, it is pretty recent but it is about a futbol club, also comedy). Para podcast yo diría que El Dollop, que es una regionalización de la versión original gringa, es producida por 2 de los podcasteros más exitosos de Mexico, aparte de esto, gracias por el interés en español y Mucha suerte!!
