That's why I don't consider I've "learned" a lick until I can improvise different variations of it

The only way to learn a physical action is to start doing reps to develop neuron pathways. If someone says it's easy, they aren't remembering the work it took to develop those pathways.

I love your youtube video's and your courses. Fruit and rotting fruit explained this time. Reminds me of a great album "fresh fruit for rotting vegetables" 😅

So true. Took your advice last year...started working on small parts....repeating them hundreds of times...before moving to the next part. My playing and learning jazz chords has become far more second nature...my brain is working in synch with my fingers now...often at a subconscious level. Play songs for fun...but to 'grow' you gotta 'put in the reps'!

And if you really want to learn the cool new bit over there, figure out how it connects to the tree trunk. (That’s what I try to do, anyway.) Great lesson!

Lick hoarding is a problem for us guitar players

Spot on…I jump from trying to learn one song to the next without learning the songs, I am that hoarder with a house full of unmastered songs, licks, etc. Results in a mediocre player that can’t really perform anything well, especially under pressure. Will definitely focus on your advice, makes a lot of sense.

Being a natural born collector all my life of all kinds of things (that I do enjoy as objects) your comment about hoarding was quite illuminating and a bit challenging. I think you are right. This can easily happen with instructional courses, concepts, licks, strategies, guitars, pedals, etc etc etc.... And it is completely natural as you mentioned with our human psychology. So I agree, the battle is really with our brains and propensity to loose focus. I think realizing this on a real gut level (not just an interesting "idea") is a great step toward more mastery and pleasure and less frustration. It does requite self-awareness and vigilance, but I think adopting that attitude could also be fun as well as productive. Can I do it? Game on?

I make an earnest effort to decide what I'm planning to practice for the day the night before. Sometimes I'm successful, other times my instinct will try to get out of it and I'll distract myself with another topic to 'Avoid' the chore at hand. Many times that will work out as a complete focus on the particular exercise of defiance, and make for exceptional progress. It works like getting a child to perform the task you want by offering another in it's place. A mind trick. The biggest problem regarding focus, and I whole heartedly agree here, is seeing everything you want to accomplish lined up in an overwhelming row from left to right. Everything seen all at once standing in front of you. Making a concerted effort to organize that line in a single file in front of you takes out the guesswork and confusion as it forces you to see only what's directly in front of you. Once exhausted for the session, add it to the top of the stairs at a higher level and proceed with the next step in front of you. Rinse, repeat.
