All I could rember . Was knock rock roll. I'm lucky I found your site again. As I remember this was the best for me learning vibrato. I've learned a new trick and that is to place a toothpick into joint of finger that is tense. The joint should be loose. And the toothpick should fall. I don't have any tooth picks handy however. I still think yours is the very best way for vibrato. Please keep this posted. Your slow learner student chris e. Usa.😅

OMG.....what a fabulous way to teach vibrato! I teach middle school strings and the one skill they always ask to learn is vibrato. Since we are part virtual and part live, the way I usually teach it might not work so well and I was trying to think of ways to make it fun, short and simple as well as something they can practice on their own. Thank you so much!!!

Hello Brian, An enthusiastic "thank you" for such a vibrant comment and thank you for using this awesome classroom here on KZitem to help you reach your goals. Vibrato has a very broad learning curve. Some violinists get it in a few weeks, but most need a broader span of time for it to click and to develop the myelin/mind-body connections. I can't help but put my teacher hat on and also let you know that if you step back and think of the concept presented here, it will help your violin playing overall (that concept is that the challenge of playing the violin is that it is defying gravity and asymmetrical). I would love to invite you to my website to share more support - I think you will appreciate the offerings: www.musicforyoungviolinists.com/ best wishes, Heather

Dear Heather it's going remarkably well. I hope to come back to your method but for now am using Benedetti vibrato method. I notice I am not very able to wiggle my wrist and think my perch is off from my fleshy part of my hand. As far as tambour goes I'm spot on. I'm studying Oistrache G string vibrato. I like his side ways hold of the violin. Bye for now, will be back in near future.😅

Hello Walter Wright, Thank you so much for taking a moment to post. I am proud of you for taking up the violin again (being injured this is a dream of mine as well). I also wanted to encourage you to consider the main concepts of this video for technique beyond just vibrato. Two of the biggest things that make playing the violin difficult are the lack of symmetry and working against gravity. Sometimes just being aware of these factors can help you in your assessments of your challenges. Also, I would love to invite you to my website for some more inspiration (and tons of free downloads). Best wishes, HF

Thanks Rebecca, I appreciate the feedback and am happy this is useful. Bigger principles of this are to remove confounding factors and focus on the core technique in isolation before approaching with other variables. Another message inside this video is using a story to teach (or learn a technique). The brain loves stories, stories do not have to be sophisticated and it engages the spirit. When the spirit is fed, the body will do the work needed. Best wishes and please join me on my website for other resources you will not find anywhere else. Thanks! HF

This was very helpful. Could you add a part 2 to this: When you put your hand into 1st through 3rd position. Also my 1st finger has trouble sometimes. How do you deal with that.
@MusicforYoungViolinists
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the reply and I am so happy that this helped you. My first thought of feedback is that even when you go back to formal playing (i.e. instrument on the shoulder) continue to do your vibrato studies in "cello" position until you have fully formed the mind-body circuits. Your body needs thousands of repetitions until you have enough myelin built up around the neural connections. The more you repeat this with correct form (which the "cello" position helps you accomplish) the more myelin insulated your nerves and the faster these impulses can travel. Once you have accomplished enough repetitions, you will have it in your body for life. I hope this makes sense. Most errors in vibrato come from staying in 1st position too soon for too long and erasing some of the proper technique that was originally established. Please let me know if you have more questions. It's a fantastic topic to dive into!

For your first finger vibrato issues - are you squeezing the neck of the violin when you play? I call this "driving with the brakes on." If this is your issue, it's best fixed by not working on vibrato directly but by reviewing the easiest pieces you know without vibrato and just focusing on keeping the first finger off of the neck of the violin. This foundation needs to be EASY, effortless and consistently accomplished before your vibrato will be successful.

I'm gonna try this method. I've had a number of friends and gone through loads of instructional videos on how to do vibrato and I've been having a lot of trouble with it it. I was told by one person I'm doing a cello vibrato and once you develop a cello vibrato you can't develop a violin vibrato? Not only do I not play cello but I've never heard another person tell me that so I don't know how accurate that information is? Hopefully this works for me, it's a lot different than I've seen other people describe it.

Thanks for the note. Just in my experience teaching for the past 20 years, some people will get vibrato in a matter of weeks and some in a matter of years. There is a huge range in gaining fluency with this particular technique. I applaud you for searching out tips to help support you with this. Bigger concepts to remember at to scan the body for tension, stay consistent with your goals and videotape yourself to see it from another perspective. best wishes! Heather

Hi Zahra, This is pretty normal. Some violinists may get this technique in a few months but most can take 12-24 months. Try this approach out for the next 8 weeks and see if it helps. The easiest finger to master is 3rd finger. Best wishes, Heather
