Hello Connie. I've been downsizing for about 10 months. I'm 65 yrs old. I live in a 1 bdrm house. It's been emotionally difficult, especially in the beginning. I'm happy to say it's a lot easier. I told myself "I've enjoyed these things, now someone else can" I decided to give away my stuff. My goal is for my sons to be able to clean out my house in one load, in case I move to nursing home or leave this world 🙌🏼 I enjoyed your video. Thank you bunches 🤗

I really like your question ‘Does this add value?’ I’ve always been puzzled by the Marie Kondo ‘spark joy’ approach. I have many things I need and use on a daily basis that don’t exactly spark joy, such as my spatula or hair dryer. 😄 Questioning if it’s adding value is a much better question.

I have a Dyson hairdryer. (I know they are pricey, it was a reward to myself for sticking out a work contract I hated) It absolutely sparks joy and I love every time I use it. It also reminds me of the time I did a hard thing and saw it through to the end.

If people don't feel joy about "boring" stuff like a iron or hairdryer, I think it's bc. they lack a bit of appreciation and gratefulness for those useful things.. If you once had no hairdryer or iron or washing mashine or whatever Marie comes from another culture, where being thankful is a quite natural & given habit/attitude. That's why she "greets" and thanks the house and thanks and passes the decluttered stuff.. It's more "eastern" in general, I think. In many western cultures (US, Europe etc.) we lost the modesty & humility in simple things. Everything has to be bigger, better, the best, joy instead of just reasonable and fun instead of joy.. The dopaminergic system is leached out. We lack the joy for the little things..

I discovered while decluttering that I did not even know how much of each thing I actually owned. I gave away two irons as I no longer iron my clothes only to open a different cupboard the next day and yes you guessed it there was another iron. I made myself give that iron away as well although I struggled with that, even though I don't iron. I cannot understand my own need to keep things 'just in case.''

Thank you so much Connie. Just what I needed to hear. What REALLY helps me to pass some of my things along, that I actually still like, but honestly no longer use is to find the right place to donate them so they will be honored there. A local organization for woman and men (boys and girls) being trafficked in my area get my clothes, shoes and other items. I want them to have nice things not worn out hand me downs. I am so much more able to give things away when I know they will have a new purpose AND hopefully bring some joy to someone instead is just sitting around my house.

Wow, this is great video. I’ve watched a lot of organizing videos and one thing I heard you say here really is powerful, and something I don’t remember ever hearing before. “Would I buy it again?” I have the hardest time, no matter what I paid for something, getting rid of things I have shame about buying. I feel bad that I spent money on certain things. Asking myself this question, will really help me go back through the stuff I have and getting rid of these objects that make feel feel shame about spending money on. Thank you. Excess things have energy in them and I’m ready to be free from that. And I’m ready to really think before. Purchase anything new. 💗

People who can't let go of their junk - reminds me of a squirrel who visits the yard and tries to stuff FOUR peanuts into his cheeks at once and runs off, having to stop and pick them up as they fall out of his mouth. It's so silly to waste so much time and energy on STUFF. They hold you back from living.

Bless you! It can be so hard. I was only able to part with my sweet Mama's things a little at a time over two or three years. I had to wait until I felt "ready" and could let go of them. Then after a couple of months, I would clear out a bit more. Do it when YOU feel ready. Grief is a hard journey, give yourself some permission to move on at your own pace. When deciding to eliminate an item, I tell myself it is going to a person who will use and appreciate it. It helps! Also, I view St. Vincent's Thrift shop as my closet: I send clothes there that I am not wearing. If I need that item again, I go to my "closet" and find it again. Of course, that rarely happens.

I really enjoyed your video. I never even considered being a minimalist until recently. My family, my mother, and my adult children are all moving out of state together. It has been extremely difficult and expensive taking trips across country and back. Last month I had to drive five hours away just to rent a 24ft cargo trailer. They’re hard to find in California with so many people leaving. By the time I had returned the trailer it had cost $6,000 including fuel. I seriously question whether the contents were even worth half that much? I easily had another trailer full to go. I started sticking things out in front of my house and watched them disappear. I felt a relief when they were gone. These were things I no longer have to move. There are things that are irreplaceable and sentimental that I will keep but this has certainly changed the way I think and feel about all the stuff I thought I needed to hold onto.

thanks for this Connie. I'm having so much trouble decluttering, and this is helpful. This is partly because I still have a lot of my parent's things, after they passed some years ago, and I find it difficult to discard them or give them away. And also, with my own stuff, its the 'I might need it sometime' mentality that gets me. So, if I dont need it in my current life, I'm going to move it on. And I know my parents would hate me to clutter my life with their things that I don't use or need.

I think letting go is usually the hardest thing to do.. even just in life in general.. but you have to let go of that mentality. I usually freak out n feel like am going to need something later.. but if I haven't used it in over a year then it serves no purpose, just takes up space, that's the hardest thing to accept but I don't think about the things I've gotten rid on in the past, I hardly remember what I even got rid of i just know it's stuff. just now finding your channel, and absolutely love it ! I shop at a local thrift store and find the greatest things at very affordable prices. I have a feeling of accomplishment and contentment that I found an item that I had been wanting, but did not want to pay full price, and now I have it for a minimal investment ( books are usually $1, shoes are $2, so you get the picture, stuff is really cheap). So when I want to clean out my closet, kitchen cubbards, or toy boxes, I remind myself that someone else will get this joyful feeling when they pick up the item that I am donating (all money stays within our county to help low income folks with health care) and someone else will really need and love and use this item in their home, for minimal investment. Win Win. Now, this process doesn't always work for me to declutter and donate, but I just reminded today that the things I am not using are something that another person can use, and will be so excited to find it and take it home, give it a good washing or cleaning, and get use of it. I appreciate the folks that have the courage to donate really nice things, so that I can buy them for minimal investment. Things I would otherwise not have. Hope this helps someone that is on the fence. If you ever wonder what happens to your donated items, just go into a local thrift store that benefits a non-profit in your town, and find an item that is dirt cheap and you wanted anyway. You'll get the good feeling that I'm talking about.

We've been working on gradually downsizing for the last few years. We try to stay with it, but not get consumed. We go through an area (ie., a closet, the shed, or some bins) about every few weeks. We keep a list of people & places items can be donated to, & box things with a note as to where they will be going. When there is a relative, friend, or neighbor I know personally who wants an item, it's easier for me to let the item(s) go. We still give items to charities like New Horizons, ARC & Goodwill as well.

Thanks, that sparked a desire to take on .. wait for it, the paperwork around here. I actually need a room for it. The weight I have because of too much paperwork. I'm sure I don't need every receipt , or directions for every appliance . Yes this will be fun. Sending love your way.

Hi! The beauty about minimalism and decluttering is that YOU get to decide what you keep and let go. Honor wherever you are at today.

Nice video, I’m trying to downsize my things. I inspired my husband to declutter his things, he has a reason to everything! ….I don’t mind his huge huge cat collection of antique figurines plus glassware and antique watches and new watches which is his hobby to restore. I just hope I pass before him because I would be so overwhelmed with his “ stuff” lol

Connie, I so enjoy your videos & I’m learning. I’m embarking on the simplicity & calmness in my home. I struggle with wall art, too little vs too much. Do you have wall art in the place you live?

I am learning that minimalism is a process not a destination. And that i re downsize each space every few months. Gets easier each time to let things go.

I've been at it for several years and am almost finished. When it got too hard and/or emotional I would take a break, sometimes for months, and begin again. I bet I've gone through some boxes 3 or 4 times until I was able to release the items that only mean something to me and nobody else will want. Plug along at your own pace. It gets easier as you go.

When I was decluttering, I made photos of all my stuff. Then I could make an album of why those things were special or important. Looking at some now, I don’t even remember the or remember the event. Lol.

Just want to add that there are those of us who find exaggeratedly minimalist surroundings very unnerving. We may be in the minority, but having a severely pared down space doesn't automatically mean it's calming.

How to downsize? Do what I did.. call a junk removal company that will donate or recycle your stuff and watch it leave after they load everything.

I'm getting better at declutter things I have bought, but I still struggle with selling or giving away things that were gifts, especially very expensive things. I end up using the gifts moreso because they are expensive rather than me liking them. I suppose I have to have conversations with the people giving me gifts and be more specific on what they can give me that would bring value into my home. Still, the items I currently have are bringing me stress when it comes time to declutter or straighten up.

Aloha, I just found your Channel. I am a minimalist and still over a period of time start noticing Mr. Clutter trying to sneak in. It is a constant battle - “Me vs. Stuff.” The only way I can win is to over and over and over keeping an eye out for things not being put back in their designated home and when I bring in a new item at least 1 or 2 items need to go. Life is so much more enjoyable when it’s easy to keep everything neat, clean and orderly. It also gives me more time to just relax and enjoy a lovely home. I also agree with many of the comments about your calm, clear voice and unrushed speaking. It’s so easy to understandwhat you are saying❣️

One of the items I struggle to let go of are my 30+ years of journals I have written. I’ve attempted multiple times to read through them but always get stuck. Some of these journals have drawings/art I’ve created on a daily basis. They take up a lot of space and have had to be moved too many times. What to do? Do you have any suggestions on how to let go of such a deeply meaningful possession? Digitizing feels absolutely overwhelming since there are so many. I appreciate any feedback you can provide. The value is my spiritual history, my art journey, and honoring my personal story (maybe even referencing for future writing projects.) Thank you for your gentle, kind approach!

I know this may seem weird, but have you thought of going through them and keeping the entries you absolutely love, and then burning the rest? Sometimes I fill up journals and then burn them… I just needed to get the words out, but most entries, I had no interest in revisiting.

Tackling a big project like journals can be overwhelming. Try breaking it up into smaller projects, do one journal a week. A few ideas might resonate with you. Create a few "new" journals made up of your most priced art and entries, almost like scrap booking. You could also try to take pictures or scan your favorite ones and create a digital book. If you come to an entry that you can't decide if you should keep or not "the maybe", keep it for now. Revisit the "maybe" entries in 6 months times. Best of luck! Remember to take it slow and honor where you are today. Sending you happiness & joy

Dawn, it is only my opinion, but those journals are part of who you are, your life, heritage, and what makes you who you are today. I say God Bless you for doing it for thirty [30] years. I wish I had. Take your time, Find a way to put them on flash drive, digitize them, whatever it takes to minimize the paper. But don't destroy your history. Especially if you have children and grandchildren. My Step-Grandmother wrote a book about her childhood in Hungry. It was one of the most interesting things I read as a young girl. I only wish I had started 30 years ago and also, all my ancestors had written things about their lives, even if it was a couple sentances or paragraph everyday to pass down thru the generations. Good luck.! You can do this project.!

Dawn, you are prayfully considering your ways of doing it? As a friend reminded me very recently...."GOD Never gives us more than we can handle." Take it one step at a time, at your own pace. Your children are old enough to get them involved. Also, if your grandchild is, ask them to help you. If nothing else with the art projects part to start. It is a good way to have them learn to appreciate all forms of art work. Remember, writting is a talent and art in its own right. My words of encouragement to you are: "Remember, this is your Spirtual Journey. One Day At A Time."

"Honor where you are at." Thank you for that permission to be kind to myself! We are moving to Florida in June and I spent all day sorting kitchenwares. But I was so tough on myself, "I should donate more of these! Will I really have a nice dinner party in our new house? These fancy gadgets are expensive, how can you get rid of them?" I need to focus on what steps I did take and I always have the ability to purge and declutter again! It is not an all or nothing process! Thank you ❤️🙏

I often feel quilty about the things I bought that I thought I loved at the time and maybe I did but it did not last- clothes - household items - decor items. I love that question would I buy this again. I am getting better at it but I find I get stuck still. Right now I have a number of things that I want to let go but the guilt is keeping me holding on to them. day by day
