do you already have a race plan for 2024?

The only plan I have right now is the Olympic Trials Marathon in Feb if I qualify. I'll have a better idea after CIM

Hey good luck on your marathon. One of the most critical parts of marathoning is pacing. If I was in your shoes I would go out right at PACE and if you can run negative splits that would be great . But don't kill a great Marathon going out faster than race pace. It'll kill you in the second half.

Thank you! Normally I would agree with you completely. But I am planning to go out faster, and that plan won’t change for 2 reasons: first, I’ve been training for 2:13-2:15 paces with my fitness. So I’ve been preparing to be ready for sub 5:10s, the 5:15s and 2:18 is kinda arbitrary and slower than what my fitness is ready for. Second, the muscle cramping problem.. is likely I’ll have spasms. And if I do, I need some buffer. I’ve tried going out on pace 3 times, all endings in failure for that reason. Anyway, it’s a bit of a unique situation!

Thanks for the video!! Very informational. Loved seeing adam in there too aha. Just a question, for your compounds and stuff you arent wokeing close to failure or anything right?
@mottesen_runs

Far from that. Yeah I’m just lifting up to a weight where 3 sets of 6 is tough, but I’m not riding the line of failure by any means

Does strength training also increase speed? Because I have seen people who run less mileage than me, still run faster than me. Given, I weigh 4-5kg more than them.
@mottesen_runs

I believe it does improve top end speed some, but I think it has minimal effect on distance events since most of the fitness speed comes from threshold, VO2 max work, and mileage. The largest gains will be in strengthening form for more efficiency (which is a very small increase in speed compared to fitness gains), and increase the likelihood of staying healthy.

@@mottesen_runs Idk man, people running 25-30 miles a week (same distance, same speed every day) run faster than me, who did 50 miles/week with threshold, long runs etc. and running for more years than them😪😪 Maybe it was my vegetarian diet or strength or something else, I just can't make sense of it.

Yeah comparing to others can be tough to pinpoint what’s making the difference. But you should ask them what they think. you could certainly get a good lifting routine and see what difference it makes for you!

To somebody who's main focus is running but didnt want to compete on high level,should he train his upper body like other gym rats do Monday to Saturday? And if so how to handle both running and lifting on the same day?
@mottesen_runs

I may not be the right person to answer this question. My experience is fairly limited: lifting only twice a week to help with running

Yes - most commonly with my schedule I do my hard workout in the morning, then an easy run and a lift in the afternoon on the same day.

Workout days! Make the hard days hard and focus on recovery on the easy days. Yeah should’ve mentioned that 😅
