Great video! Have you ever tried cutting your cigar after you toast it? I’ve heard a few folks suggest that but not sure why?

Hi AJ! Need advice... I am currently using in my tupperdor (Sistema Klip It 7 litter) some 62% boveda packs and getting a stable 64% in my calibrated hygrometer. Do I need more humidity? I mainly have new world sticks. I ask this because this weekend I smoked one Oliva G Toro and it burned wonderfully and razor sharp but tasted like burned cardboard 😮 Is it like that normally or could it be because of a low humidity? Something else could have ruined it? Thanks!

Stabilizing at 64% is definitely in the sweet spot imo 👌 Regarding the Oliva, its a process of elimination of all the variables at play. Where and how it was stored, with you, prior to purchase, etc. also you sure it’s not your palate? How are your other sticks smoking? It could also just be a bad cigar, Oliva makes good sticks but the serie G isn’t their finest. When I smoked under humidified sticks, the smoke was sharp and harsh on the throat in the first 2-5 minutes of light up but they still tasted good the rest of the way through the 2nd and final third.

@@sigmanado I hope it's not my palate. I'm returning to the "hobbie" after 20 years of abstinence but I hope that's not it LOL I assembled my tupperdor 2/3 months ago and I'm starting to smoke from it. I'm using the same Sistema 7lt boxes that you have. I put in there 4 x 62% Boveda packs and some cedar sheets that come in the cigar boxes. I have sticks from 4 sources now. This Oliva G I smoked was one of the first ones to enter the tupperdor. As to the conditions it was kept at the store I don't know nothing. Supposedly it's a professional store and it was in their walk-in humidor. But .... This was the 1st "victim stick" so it's too soon to say if it was that Oliva G stick that was bad or the humidity conditions. But I'm glad that in your experience 64% is OK. I'm using 2 x "SwitchBot Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer" that were calibrated with the 75% Boveda Calibration kit. They are very accurate. I have 2 for mere redundancy as they are very small. Conclusion .... I need to smoke more sticks before jumping to any conclusion. Thanks AJ !

@@jvidia Yeah, that’s a solid plan! Enjoy more sticks to “test” things out lol sounds like you got everything covered though 👍 And lots of things can affect palate, like sinuses, what you ate, or drink pairing. Enjoy the process and journey bro 💨

I always try to use a soft flame and only toast the edges. I let the cigar light itself from the outside in. Seems to keep it as cool as possible. Of course soft flame isn't always possible. I don't even bother stoking it.
