I've been trying to train mine, and tonight one of them went in there to poop. I was proud of how very quickly he learned, however when he left the tray the poop was stuck to his butt. It's the thought that counts

One of my old rats roamed around on my bed once while I cleaned the cage, he was sort of panicing, I didn't know why. Eventually I saw him sitting on the corner of my bed, then just laid there, and when I wanted to pick him up he was clinging onto the sheets to hide some drops beneath him. Silly boy was worried I'd be mad at him for pooping on the bed and tried to hide his drops xD It was adorable.

Great video! I actually use ONLY rocks in the litter trays rather than regular litter, and my boys have been wonderful about using the litter trays. I use smooth, white landscape rocks. The best part is they are 100% reusable, so no waste. I take both trays out every night and wash the rocks - the poops float and the rocks are heavy, so it’s easy to pour off the water and all the “messes” wash down the drain. I make sure to stir the water through the rocks to get any stray poop - that’s what makes the white rocks so great, the poo is so easy to see. Then I wrap the rocks in a towel to dry them, dry out the litter tray and pour the rocks back in. Clean litter pans each day, and odors are almost non-existent! When I fully clean the cage each week, I also soak the rocks in a bit of water with oxy-clean to deodorize and sanitize them - rocks are porous, so eventually they do retain odor unless this is done. My boys like their litter boxes so much, they go back up the ramp into their cage during playtime to do their “business,” then come back down again to play, so they don’t leave messes anywhere but in the boxes. 🙂

Thank you! I'm a new rat parent and this video is very helpful along with the reacting to your audience's cages video! I learned about the options of using a full fleece bedding with a litter tray addition rather than filling the entire bottom with bedding. My girls (new rat owner here!) came here on the weekend, so I had plenty of time to throw the poop in the litter box. The box has the same bedding in it as there is in the cage. The oldest is 8 weeks old and it took her 1 day to get it?!! I am so incredibly amazed at how clever rats are. She even climbes from the top all to the bottom just to put her big bean in there. I'm so proud of her! Now the babies have to learn it, too. They're still scared to go to the bottom level where the litter box is. Therefore the poop throwing will continue!

My Snoopy (usually) uses 2 or 3 litter pans to poo. They're basically cheap kitchen drawer dividers. He pees outside of his house, just on the doorstep, as many rats do. When he is outside of the cage or in his playarea he pees on paper kitchen towels. Some 6 layers thick. I had trained him to use those when he is outside of the cage on the couch with me by just picking him up when I saw him 'take the position' and plopped him on those. And I am very lucky that he is one of the few rats I had that never drips pee on everything. My two new rats Hector and Firi usually poop everywhere in the cage tray. It is also too full for litter pans. But they have also decided to use the big Zooplus cabin that I got for them as a toilet area. It has shredded paper towels in it. They also usually pee anywhere in the cage tray. They have paper kitchen towels on the shelf outside of the tube that they usually sleep in and used to pee there. Lately they stopped peeing there. They do sometimes just let it flow when they are in the top tube though. From where it just drips down onto the roof of their wooden cabin. I cleaned it this week and it is virtually scent-free again. My condolences about Rolo. I just read about it in a comment below this post 💖 Snoopy just had his second birthday on the 26th. He is also getting old age ailments already. His arthritis is slowly progressing and he may also have heart problems because he is breathing with his sides a lot. I am fairly sure that it is not Myco, but I will take him to the vet for a major checkup hopefully this Wednesday when the weather is a bit cooler to take him out in the carrier with me (My American friend who had more problem rats than I had is thinking that he may have heart problems and not Myco as well). Ratguide says that 18 to 28 degrees C are the optimal temperatures for rats, and from what I observed last week they are right. My house was almost 27 degrees inside and I used icepacks and tiles in the rats' cages to help them stay cool. And refreshed their water multiple times a day. Especially for Snoopy, because he is already old, a bit overweight and already has some problems. Take care 💖

Thanks for your videos, the info you give helps to keep them happy and safe.

My rats were litter trained when i first got them (I’ve had them from babies, I don’t know how they were trained but they always went in their litter tray) but now they are so lazy and will do it anywhere. I have a plastic bed (it’s basically a small plastic bowl on the side of the cage) that they love to sleep in but recently have been using that as a litter Tray instead as they are too lazy to go all the way to the bottom floor. Shall I just turn this into a litter tray so that they have two or try to get them to not use it?

So after I got him the new cage, He just pooped every were and it took me like 45 minutes to clean his cage. But this time, I put some poops in a tray along with a rock and as soon as I picked him up and placed him in the tray Milo sniffed it, walked around it, then went in it and pooped. I was so happy thank you so much, Milo learned super fast!!

Sadly my Snoopy died less than a week after I posted my reply to this post. On Friday night (I was still restless from the loss of Snoopy and just had to do something to calm my head) it was time for the weekly bedding change of the small cage, but now that the big cage had come available I decided to prepare the big cage for Hector and Firi instead and moved them over after I was done. I used my drawer divider litter pans again and also used your idea of 'scentmark rocks' and that worked very well. They use the litter pans for pooing most of the times. I also use paper kitchen towel stacks in multiple locations throughout their cage and they often use them for peeing on. Of course they still pee on the doorstep right outside their houses, but putting paper towels there wouldn't help because they would use them as nest bedding. I've also read your entire bogglebuddies tonight (you have to find things to do when you have to clear your mind from grieving). I feel like I know you even better now. I recognise some of your social issues myself, having ADHD and very few friends with almost no time themselves to visit me. I also noticed that you removed most if not all product reviews. I understand the need to give only (scientifically) verified advice, and won't do any advice or product review posts myself because of that. Except when I would have severe complaints about one of my vets, but I usually leave those to comments below posts. I would say you're entitled to do product reviews, as long as people don't see them as God's great advice book. Opinions vary, and what you think is fine may not be for other people. But then they would have to make a case for why they have a different opinion than you. I am usually open to constructive debating and I can change sides when I get new information. But you have to have strong points to find better information than I do. And I can't stand pseudo-science or 'but I had more rats than you' argumentations or 'but my rat loves to be washed' cr@p (but that's a whole other story). I had to learn many things by making ignorant mistakes because there wasn't as much information online about rats 16 years ago when I had my first two rats. I now had over 25 rats and still learn new things from every one of them. Sadly also things that I wouldn't like to know, like new ailments or genetic defects. Keep doing what you're doing (and maybe take a look at or subscribe to my channel?), Bart, Hector 🐀 and Firi 🐀

Okay. Yeah I see it now. I thought I had read something about removing a bedding review. I see there are still cage reviews and Pet Haul videos. I guess my brain was a bit scattered from the time of day/night 😯 Alright, my mistake then. Your bogglebuddies was still interesting ☺ I had thought about doing a rat IG myself, but it seems like IG is more a female thing? Where they also talk about moods? Or is that an overgeneralisation? I may be online since 1989, but I could never get into IG or twitter. And I had already decided to unjoin any ratgroups because of the dictator mods and admins who think that they're omniscient gods, Anyway, keep doing what you're doing!

My method for litter training is/was okay but not perfect; i got rectangle small bins from dollar tree and filled them with full cheeks litter and put a rock there. I've had mine for about 2 weeks, I've seen one of them go in the tray 2 times but the other one doesn't and they both pee and poop EVERYWHERE! They never chose a corner I just chose for them that was closest to where they seemed to go the most. I haven't been very diligent about putting their poo back into it so maybe that's why they haven't learned yet. When I deep clean their cage tomorrow I'll definitely save some poo too lol

Hi! I have two young males. They love their hammock, but also use it as a litter box.. how can I get them to do their business in the litter box I placed in the cage? Thanks in advance!

Can you tell us what litter box you are using there? I can’t seem to find that one in my search. I’d like to google it. Thanks!

Great video Imee! I have found that the Breedercelect cat litter is cheaper than the back 2 nature small animal litter. Its EXACTLY the same product made by the same company FibreCycle - just marketed and packaged differently! Back 2 nature 30l small animal litter in PetsatHome is £17.99 whereas their 30l cat litter is £13.49.

I tried both and they are not exactly the same. The cat litter pellets are smoother and a bit more compact. They also absorb less than the small animal pellets. Here they sell both for the same price. I would personally recommend the small animal pellets over the cat litter pellets

uitjebolsmurf I've also used both and haven't seen a difference at all in absorbancy. I find they both work just as well. :)

For the £4.50 difference I would also use the cheapest one ☺

uitjebolsmurf where do you live? I would pick the back 2 nature if they were sold at the same price however here the price difference adds up! Means I can use the difference to buy more rattie toys!! 😊

Netherlands. They're both €14.99 for the 20L versions. Maybe it is my imagination, but I think the small animal one smells of pee less.Have you seen my channel with rat tricks by my Snoopy yet? ☺

Most animals like to drag their good to a good hiding spot (like why dogs always bring their treat somewhere else) idk about rats tho,

Can you make a video on how to litter train mice? It would make my life easier 😂 also I got to hold a rat the other day, I thought it would bite but she actually was really cute!

I found my rats sleeping in what was supposed to be the litter tray. Should I try to make it more uncomfortable in there, or are they still going to use it for litter? I have rocks in there to encourage them to pee, and paper to soak it up. (They ripped up some of the paper to make it more comfy to lie in.)

So I’m new to this. I have a extra flight cage and I’m thinking about getting rats. Can you use fleece for rats main bedding if I give them a dig box? I’ve learned my cage size is big enough for 6 rats but I’m thinking about getting 3 baby rats.

Thanks this helps a lot. My two boys aren’t litter trained yet but they’re only 5 weeks old. I’ll give them time. I put poop in their tray and I think they’re starting to get it! Yay lol

Should I get 2 litter trays for 3 rats or just 1? I only have a multilevel cage but the middle floor has been removed

You had me at "poo colored shirt'! I needed to watch this because I am getting my very first wats from a small breeder who is very very careful to breed out bad traits and produce very healthy Dumbo Eared Rex Wats. Getting juvies...5 weeks I think. And two adult males. I bought a YUUGE double tier wat (not ferret) cage. And I have a smaller separate cage for the juvies until they get larger. But I am buying a STEEL litter tray, with a grate over top. The grate is replaceable for $10 if it gets to worn. The grate is made for little rat feet.

That’s exciting! Please make sure your baby rats are at least 6 weeks old, preferably 8 before you bring them home! ☺️

How do you deal with pee. My rats always pee in their beds and I suppose they are getting older so it might be loss of bladder control. I'm getting a pee Roch tho so that will help bec I've had it before
