there are three communities which have amazed everyone, with people living up to a 100 years, not just living but living a healthy life with happiness and joy and more contented life than the rest of the world.
I recently watched this documentary on channel 4 - it was a research conducted by a British journalist and reporter who was almost 74 and he wanted to learn how to live a more happy and healthy life- Jon snow- visited three communities of people who were living healthier lives and more contented lives . so what are their secrets let's find out
Greece-
They also ate simple food, mostly organic, most of the families produced their own food, their own olive oil, their own wine and vegetables- eating fresh produce which is not subjected to any chemical treatments - seasonal food, local food and a lot of probiotics.
One of the people he interviewed said that her grandmother never took any medicine in her entire life, and the goal is to live like her.
One of the members of the community also mentioned that what you eat is equally important to how you eat it- having a meal , while connecting to each other and just enjoying the food and the company of the people around you.
They also organised community events where they cooked for the community, helped the old people in the community by helping them with cleaning, house work, when they can- lots of voluntary work, just giving back to the community.
Older people were included in all these events, rather than living lonely lives,
There were no classes in their community, no separation of rich and poor, no one was focused on materialistic things and just because someone had a new car, no one went and got one for themselves. Everyone was equal and no one tried to outweigh each other.
So they ate everything natural, lot of physical exercise, never went after material things, gave back to the community and were happy with what they had rather than taking too much stress to make more and more money.
Loma linda is a place in the USA but while the rest of America has problems like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, this community lived more than 10 years longer than the rest of America- what are their secrets
Most people in Loma Linda were followers of Adventism, a denomination in christianity- and they believe that our body is the temple of God, we need to look after our body so that we can fulfil the purpose God has for us.
The most interesting thing about this community is that all the people above 60 years go to gym and have an active lifestyle rather than sitting at home .
A 96 year old dietician in the community explains how to eat food- he says eat your breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a pauper.- their diet is mostly vegetarian and vegan, they never drink coffee. There are no bars in Loma Linda
They are mostly service oriented, helping the community in every way possible, doing voluntary work.
Research at the seventh day adventist university about the elderly people of the community proves that they have less depression, low suicide rates all because they can manage stress well- by unburdening all their problems to God and letting God intervene.
Religion forms the base on which the foundation for a long and healthy life is laid in this community.
Japan-
Japans population live longer than any other country- all of the residents started their day at 6:30 am where they stretch , following a radio programme which is designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle. But japan wasnt always like this, in the 80’s people had very high blood pressure and stroke, so a doctor from the Nogano community started taking initiative, encouraged people to eat more vegetables and people would go to everyones house, check the salt levels in their food, give them guidance to reduce salt intake.
People above 60 also had colleges and training places to train them to get new skills to stay employed even after 60- especially because the younger population is way less than the elderly population in Japan because of the low birth rate in Japan.
Most of us are keen on having a healthy diet and lifestyle, but when there is no proper purpose behind these activities it is hard to keep doing the right thing- when you define a purpose why you should do it, it will help you stay on the right track and live a longer and more fulfilled life.
