I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and strange to say my life has never been happier..that's because now i appreciate every little thing, every little moment, and everyones kindness. your size of property doesnt matter..you can only sit in one room at a time no matter how large or small your place is, give yourself a beautiful view by putting flowers in the window, put some bird seed out on a plate. personal possessions are not important.. surround yourself with people who value you for who you are, not for what you own because in the end it doesn't matter one jot

OK Jane, this what I am doing to look after my wellbeing right now! Purchased a motor home, traveling England visiting all THE NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTIES. Writing a book about my travels and experiences as I go. If I hadn't of been careful with money, I wouldn't be able to afford to do this. Like yourself, debt and mortgage free and now 70 years old and decided to do something adventurous!

Great Stuff! But don't forget English Heritage and other places. I'm retired and I'm doing something similar but still based from home. I call it 'Looking at England' - NT & EH properties, nice countryside, pretty villages, castles, battlefields, and all the rest .... and towns & cities too - before English history & culture is all destroyed & lost for ever.

Unfortunately my son broke our tv by throwing a spoon at his youngest sister, she ducked and the spoon damaged the screen so much that we couldn’t use it. I looked into repairing it and that was out the question. So I’ve decided to make do without one until the Christmas holidays so we can watch all the Christmas tv when it’s too cold to take my three kids out. During the summer holidays I’ll be taking them out as much as my health allows. We’ve got 3 play parks, a library and a free museum with a tourist information centre where they can pick up leaflets and make posters of where they want to go

Ignore the negative opinions. Like you say you do you, you pay your bills you live the life you choose. I learnt years ago to ignore other peoples opinions. I once had a comment from a work colleagues that I had parked my rush bucket next to her brand new car. My work horse of a 4 x4 that towed a trailer and got me around the farm to feed the stock in all weathers (not a rust bucked a work horse) was valued at 4 times the cost of her NEW car. Mine was purchased cash hers was on finance, it was a car I could have bought cash that same day but not a bit of good to me and my life as a small holder.

I hear from people I'm not frugal becouse I have my cat, becouse I do Things... People tell's me I'm not minimalist becouse I have hobbies.... I answer, I dont care what they think and say. My life, my money.... I lost my husband for about 3,5 year ago and I kept on this jurney against a frugal and minimalist ish lifestyle, back to how we used to live in the 80's and 90's. And I'm happy, I do my best and I live my life as I want. I miss him, but I also know he is proud of me. I live in an apartment in Norway and there is a lot I can do that is free or that costs little money. Things I like to do. Knitting, read books, go for walk, around in Oslo, nature, flower....photographing, spending time whit my son, my cat, my Brother and my friends. And so on. I answer people, live your life the way you want to live, do not tell me how to live mine, becouse I live well and on my way back to the life I want to live, back to my (And my dead husband) roots. It gives me joy in sorrow. It gives me happyness. I know many people are jealous of me for living like this, have a secur economy and somhow still manage the rising prices, at least for now. I used Google translate and hope you understand what I mean.

I love your no nonsense, get it done attitude, Jane. A "there's no way around it, you just have to keep going and get it done" truth telling. I am so impressed that a couple that lives below minimum wage can save up enough money to buy a car, go on holiday to the UK to visit family once a year, go on short holidays, have a paid off roof over their heads and food on their plates!! All because you are diligent with your finances. Such an inspirational vlog to follow. I really like it when you get "serious".🤣 I need it.🤣 When I have to go to town, I get enjoyment out of speaking to the cashier, smiling at people, and if we happen to go thru a drive up I've been known to purchase the meal of the person behind me. Short, simple things because I am an introvert and these acts are non committal, yet satisfying, because they may brighten someone's day. If we help you on your journey because it gives you a focus, I'm glad, but we receive so much more from you and Mike!

It's important to me to spend money on the garden. I buy seaweed and tomato feed and compost. It keeps me sane to have a beautiful garden. I shop at discount stores for food, and wear the clothes I already have. I wear extra layers if it gets cold, and feel that I want for nothing. I think we should spend on what makes us feel better if we have anything to spare.

So true Jane. I have a new house, (2019) I managed it, my dream, a smaller house in the woods on an acre of land! Later I built a big garage, but the money has run out, I do not have electricity in my garage. The furniture is what I brought with me from my previous home, and, the one thing many has issues with - I didn´t get new curtains! 😅 Even my mother teases me every time she is here, those curtains are an eyesore! Like you said, they are not paying my bills, or getting me new stuff, so I am not interested. However, I have listened a bit, as the curtains in front of the french doors, are too long. Yesterday I washed them, ironed them, and today I will cut them and sew them to fit the windows. 👍 I don´t care if people dont like them - they dont live here! 😂 I don´t understand what people have to say negative about your property - other than maybe in envy! 😉

Jane, part of the way I look after my mental health is checking out channels like yours because frugality is often seen as miserliness, or cheapskatism by people I know. I watch Kate Kaden, Under the Median, Frugal Money Saver the Broken Wallet, Ronald L. Banks, and Prepper Princess. You and they remind me that I am not nuts! I love being debt free because it eliminates a great deal of stress. Thanks for being one of the media cheerleaders.

I have taken inventory of all my craft supplies and realized I have tons to work with. I have also been finally starting to read the books I have accumulated that I hadn't been making the time to get to. many of these books are " how to" make everything you can imagine and putting them into practice. I find if I fill my time with making stuff that is useful with what I already have I feel productive and its investing in my future. I can stock up and use the things I've made I can sell some as well as use them for gift giving. It's frugal and fun and is a good use of my spare time. It leaves no time for wallowing and helps me feel grateful and productive.

I just recently found your channel... catching up on videos! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas. I appreciate it very much. I have been living on savings for about 5 years now, mid 50s, and since the crazy this last couple, few years... I have definitely tightened up the purse strings, eliminated many 'friends' who were along for the ride, and am living simply like my university days. I try very hard not to waste anything - I don't go out except in nature - I have found people in my area to be quite rude when indoors (the restrictions deeply affected them) - I am trying to sell my house to move to be closer to my sister (all of the 'stuff' this past few years has made old grudges disappear). So, I find the simple laughter in my cat, crochet (I am a quilter too, but my quilting space is packed to declutter for showings), and fun YT videos of like minded people. Being frugal has been an adjustment for me but very much do-able - I have decided to adjust to this lifestyle because we just don't know what tomorrow will bring.

Enjoying the birdsong in my garden and as I walk around the quiet roads of the village where I live. Watching the few plants and veggies I planted come along. My heart lifted when the first seeds I sowed sprouted their first tiny leaves. You touched on an important aspect of being content when you talked about doing kindnesses for others. When you think beyond yourself you do better. I had to do a Positivity Psychology course to help children be resilient during the last recession and I try to go back to what I learned then. Listing 3to five things that you are grateful for everyday lifts your mood at once. As for others,my Dad used to say, "Be Independent". He meant be your own person. You are also right, Jane about connecting with in a simple, pleasant way on a daily basis. Thanks for this.

We all need to avoid the smoke & mirrors to other peoples lifestyles and be happy & content with our own lives. As for keeping up with the Joneses well they were just unseen fictional neighbors from a comic strip. Comic being the key word. You can't put a price on being kind, but being kind has value. Navigating through challenging times should be encouraged, which is what I find within the frugal community. Nice video.

Your points are spot on. It's one of the reasons I like your channel, you face the reality of the times, head on. I have gone through those things myself and have come to the same conclusions. We're not alone in this. My adult children, when they bought their first homes, asked the same questions, "How do people afford all these things? Are we doing the right thing by living at or below our means?" When their first recession came, I told them to watch and see how many had actually paid for these things. True enough, people were selling off their toys and even losing their homes. My children have paid off their homes and have savings put aside. Little to no debt. They are putting financial goals, like improvements on their properties, on hold or further out. Luckily, none of them are afraid of doing work themselves and are teaching their children the same. I don't say this to brag (although I'm extremely proud of them) but to show that attitudes toward lifestyle have to change and that there are many of us are living frugal, but fulfilling and rich, lifestyles. Thanks for telling it like it really is.

My hope for everyone is that they have a roof over their heads. Better still if they can own it. Just a safe little haven for themselves, their family and pets. I cherish being able to watch a movie in my bed with a warm blanket, pet cat to pat and a hot cup of coffee. Rest and time is a valuable commodity to me. Even though inflation is rife, I have found that Potatoes, Carrots, Cabbage, Onions, Lentils, Beans and seasonal fruit are still very cheap. Last night we had a Vegan roast with vegatables and a Vegan butterscotch pudding. Four king-size serves, for $ 6.50 Aus. So delicious and leftovers for two lunches. The vegan roast was a clearance markdown. All the rest cooked from scratch but so easy. A school night and after school activities to boot. Cooking from scratch saves so much money!

We have a jar for surprise money. We toss our leftover coins into the jar. At some point we count it up, and surprise! we have a little money to spend on a surprise for ourselves. Recently it added up to $70 and we bought a shredder to replace the one that died. The time before, the coins added up to $80 and surprise! we decided to treat ourselves to a lunch and trip into downtown for our mental health. It takes time for the amount to add up, but the little treat is worth it.

Thank you Jane for being so honest and sharing your thoughts with us. It makes me feel a little better when I realise others are tired of “making do” some of the time too. Getting out for a walk in the fresh air really can lift spirits when you feel a little disheartened- I always come back with a few ideas and more positivity after a walk. If I see someone on their own I do smile and say “hello” and often this starts a nice friendly chat. I wish people would realise how lonely it can be living on your own and having no one to talk to for sometimes days on end. A smile and happy face can make someone’s day - and it costs nothing. I did a bit of a “twist” on my usual batch cooking yesterday. I saw some really good quality sausages on offer and bought two packs. I cooked them all and divided them up into plastic boxes and now have them in the freezer. Ideal just to get two out to have with chips or mashed potatoes or even salad - just another frugal quick addition for any meal. Looking forward to your next helpful and inspiring video. x

Thanks for the reminders, Jane. I'm very adaptable. I've learned to deal with lean times and "full" times. I've learned to deal with good and bad, ups and downs. I take things as they come and don't worry about other things. When all else fails, I trust in God. He never fails. His provisions provide me a peace and calm...always, because I know He'll only give me what's good for me. Maybe He knows it would be good for me to learn more patience. He'll give me situations that foster that...and that goes for every virtue. As for patience, I've learned it to a degree. I understand it might take me 15 years to buy another car...or longer. As long as my current car lasts or I have some form of transportation, it's alright with me. And if I don't, I'll stay home. Right now, I can do almost everything online. It's so much so that in the last 14 months, I literally needed only ONE rank of gasoline. That shocked me, and I'm not saying I can ever do that again... Because I had a spot in my budget for gas, I kept adding to it. When it came time for another car repair, I used the unused gas money to apply toward the repair. As a rule, things work out, with God's help. I do realize it's not the most conventional financial plan....but I take help when it comes! ❤ to you and Mike!

I am going to use this in my thoughts when I feel like chaffing about not enough funds to buy what I might want or need to take things off my grocery list cause they are too costly or just not even available right now. Thanks for the change of thoughts☺️

Hi Jane. I listened to your talk, twice. You have good advice and philosophy again to share. It made me re evaluate my life and brought back a memory of something that my parents would say to my siblings and I when we were children. It always kept us grounded, humble and thankful for what we had. "Be grateful for what you have because there is always someone who is worse off than you."

Enjoyed the points you made. I’m lucky enough to have purchased a life membership for the National trust a few year’s ago, and am now getting out and about using it now, staying close to home and picnics. Thanks for keeping us all thinking.

We are enjoying ticking off our DIY projects on our home. We have arranged for a reasonable painter for some projects. We can no longer get up on ladders. I have trimmed any other expenses as much as possible. Your lovely meals are excellent inspiration. Our gardens are beginning to produce. We have lovely little lettuces and spinach now, and of course rhubarb!

Thank you for this video! I’m just a few minutes in and already really appreciate your advice for patience. I’m one week from real retirement (teaching summer school doesn’t count as full retirement, does it?) and I know it’s going to be a huge financial adjustment, but I’m so motivated.

Good day! For my mental health, I do all the things you suggest. I also give myself 15-20 minutes of quiet time to meditate, usually when I get up in the morning. I also write in a gratitude journal. Maybe have 3 to 5 positive things that have happened that day. It helps me to focus on what is good. Thank you for sharing your videos!

Great words of encouragement and realism Jane. I love to lift my mood with walking, gardening and more recently art, I rediscovered drawing and paining in midlife after a long gap and it is such a pleasure.

Thank you Jane, this was needed and encouraging. I logged onto my computer yesterday to discover that both home and car insurance, which I pay annually, had risen by over 10% (I'm in Australia). To say that my heart sank is an understatement. We have been managing well with price increases at the supermarket and petrol station, but this really brought the reality home. We also were notified recently that our council taxes will increase by 50% over the next three years - they are already more than AUD $3000 per annum (2013 euros). I wonder how council thinks most people will magic this money into existence. With all of that said, I still know that we are luckier than most with our standard of living, and both still have employment (part-time by choice).

Out of curiosity, what do your council taxes pay for? I live in the US, and am always looking to see just what is done with all money collected. Stay sane😊

@@UnStrungHero I am in Australia (but my council tax is half of Madeleine's at $1500 pa) and it pays for local roads (as opposed to major roads or highways), rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks and recreational facilities (playgrounds, public gyms and pools), community programs (event celebrations, environmental awareness), pet registration and animal control. My particular council also delivers other services including verge maintenance (trees and grass outside property boundaries), a multicultural centre, small business and community grants and events, environmental awareness programs and a security patrols. State and federal governments (bigger than local councils) deliver education/schools and universities, healthcare, public housing, welfare/income support, major roads and infrastructure, public transport, police, courts and prisons, military, communications infrastructure, support for people with disabilities, water, regulation of industries etc. These are paid for from a pool of tax money from income tax, business taxes, goods and services tax, other product levies (tobacco, alcohol and petrol are big ones), natural resource royalties, and government investments.

Jane I don't always agree with everything you say but that's OK isn't it because we are all different. Today I agreed with you wholeheartedly, we should never listen to others who put our way of living down or buy into comersials that tell us to buy this or that and it will make us happy. I have never had much but I'm thankful to have what I do have. I live on an aged pension but I'm so thankful for that. Happiness is a strange thing it happens like you said in small doses, what we should strive for i think is contentment, it took me a long while to learn that. I am contented with what I have and have long stopped looking at what others have and that makes me happy ❤

Please keep up your approach to life. You have a good attitude in these hard times. All this must frustrate you because things are at a standstill or sometimes plans are inching backwards. Is it cold enough in France to use some wood for heating? We in N. Illinois are getting rain today. It will be good for my garden and for our surrounding farmland. Surviving is the key.

Great video. We all need to take care of our mental health. I can tell you I had a great plan/budget but it's had to be reworked. I have been angry that I'm not able to pay down debt as I had planned. It's very hard to change and adapt but it's necessary. I just have to be easier on myself and like you said realize that it is just going to take longer to get where I want to be. Really enjoy taking a peek into your frugal life in France.

I think that if you have a goal you have worked hard towards, as in your case, early retirement and a lovely home and grounds it makes the reason for being so frugal a real one. Further you treat your budgeting as one of your hobbies and delight in living within your means, and that brings satisfaction too. Surely living within your means is conducive to good mental well being,. Many sleepless nights are caused through debts. We all have an opinion and, like noses, they are mostly very different, so make up your own mind, set your own course of travel through life and follow it. If you are contented, that's what matters.

We have recently had some expenses we had not budgeted for - we had the funds but now they need to be replaced - so low spend for us for the summer at least and maybe early fall also - gardening is a hobby for us and keeps us entertained, but I am using cuttings from other plants to save money - thanks for your content !

I have spent most of my life working as a nurse. Hard but rewarding work which I loved, never enough staff but we all pulled together and looked after our patients who needed us. Sad as it is these hard times are going to a great leveller for a lot of people. The people who think they have a better job or a better life than the likes of me and you. At the end of the day people may realise we were the wise ones not them
