I like the idea of the 2 pvc pipes to support the hull. I was deciding to transport hull up or down, now hull down is a viable option. Thanks.

Yeah as long as you can get the hull up there, you don’t need the showboat. A kayak load assist roller and some cradles should be good. Just remember to tie down the bow, stern, and middle.

I'm looking at different roof rack systems and this is one of them. It does look quite simple. Thanks for the video

Thank you for posting this video. I have the exact same outback and was looking to purchase the Yakima showboat but wanted to see it on an Outback first.

Appreciate the comments. Just want to point out that once the showboat is on the crossbars, it’s easier to remove the crossbars altogether with the showboat, if you ever want to take the roof rack off. I built a hoist system in the garage to help load/unload the rack. Sometimes I even load the kayak with the rack using the hoist. I will post a video of that.

Would you be able to do a video on the install of the showboat? I am struggling with the awful directions that Yakima provided. Thanks!

Thank for the comments. My rack is already in place. It will take me a while to undo it. Which step do you have problem with? Maybe I can focus on that part and go through it with you.

I have this vehicle as well and need a rack. Do those straps come with the Yakima showboat? I love how convenient and simple but strong they are. Thanks for the video
@yauckoutdoors

No, the straps come with the saddles. If you don’t plan to install saddles, you will need to purchase the straps separately besides the showboat.

That is some asian ingenuity my friend. What size PVC did you use? Looks like a permanent install on the bar. Do you get weird wind noise?
@yauckoutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Thanks bro 👊 the PVC is 2.75” schedule 40. It’s kind of permanent so I got a second set of crossbars (although I can still take the rack off the crossbars if I want, but it will take some effort). Check out the other video where I demonstrate how I build and load the racks. I have not heard wind noise, not sure if the honeycomb covers help. Cheers!

Thanks! I have the roller type that you didn't opt for. I don't like them. I don't trust the suction cups, so this might work. Just wondering the need to push the extended part back in.
@yauckoutdoors

I sometimes forgot to push them in, and accidentally opened the trunk, fortunately the sensor detected the obstacles so it didn’t open further. Also I had to disable hands-free trunk open, it accidentally opened several times when I was still loading 😅🤣

Man, I've been wondering about something you did for quite a while myself. You have no issues tying your bow and stern lines to the top of the car? I usually tie the rear to the trailer hitch and the front to two hood loops. I would love to start tying them back off to the roof rack. I understand the issue of "what if the roof rack comes off the car" but I highly doubt it would ever happen. Awesome video. Think it's the first one I've seen done like this. I want to ditch having to open my hood and use the hood loops.

I installed the rear crossbar in the far back position to maximize the distance between the crossbars. I think this will prevent the kayak from bouncing off too much in one end. Always try to test the stability after tying it down - push up, left-right, forward-backwards. The roofrack front/back tie down points are part of my car so it adds more stability.

@@yauckoutdoors Yeah thats exactly how i was thinking of doing mine this summer. Works well on the highway?
@yauckoutdoors

Yes I drove on the highway a few times, not pushing it but 70 mph is fine. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to make sure the tie down does not rub the kayak in anyway, otherwise you will leave some mark on your boat.

Great video! Do you think a hobie outback will be too wide and too heavy for this set-up? I see the hobie outback is 34" wide and 85 lbs for the hull. I couldn't even find a base or kayak rack can fit 85lbs + from Thule.
@yauckoutdoors
2 жыл бұрын
Yakima showboat 66 manual has specs up to 80lb. I guess it would be a stretch for a 85lb boat, although the crossbars on Subaru Outback can take up to 176lb. I think the issue would be when you extend the roller, you can only extend up to 24” for a 80lb boat. If you can limit that say only extend 20” by installing the showboat as far back as possible, maybe it will work. Good luck!

Nice video, thanks ! how are the 2 PVC pipes attached to the rack ??
@yauckoutdoors

I used a zinc steel punched flat bar from Home Depot, cut it to size, then bolted the PVCs to the crossbars with them. I also notched out the PVCs a little bit so they have a larger contact area with the crossbars. I can make a more detailed video if that helps.

First I notched out the pvc pipes so they will not roll when they sit on the crossbars. Then I used the punched flat bar or plate to lock the pipes down. I have another video that shows more details. I will add the link in the description. Thanks for watching.

@yauckoutdoors

It’s 2 7/8” outside diameter schedule 40. The white pvc is thinner and the diameters are either bigger or smaller. But they should also work based on what I have seen on other people’s setups.
