I live in a gated community for those 55+. Although I agree with you that masculine type clothes can add a touch of modern, the problem I've noticed here where I live is that the women dress in such a head-to-toe masculine way that it not only ages them but makes them look almost indistinguishable from their husbands. I dress in the opposite way with slimming feminine dresses, heeled shoes/boots, shoulder length hair, and well-applied makeup. It's then not surprising that I get comments from the women here that I'm too young to be living in their community and to come back in twenty years. I think the secret is to dress more feminine as you age and to add just a touch of masculine like that lovely leather jacket you showed-which I have too, of course! Thank you as always for your excellent channel.

No one ever commented on my hair when it was long and dyed. But since I embraced my natural grey and got a pixie cut I've received loads of compliments! If you pair short grey hair with more youthful or even edgier pieces like the moto jacket it works much better than going the baggy trousers & cardigan route.

Dear Ms. Lecouer: The black, leather jacket is very modern and youthful and looks amazing on you. I love the touch of the unexpected (socks) to boost the mood. As for hair, if one has a youthful face, then she can still wear her hair long and it looks great. But with a lot of wrinkles and sagging skin, the long hair does age the face; you are absolutely correct. I like the idea of wearing jeans that are flattering (not baggy); they really do add a youthful touch. Thank you for these tips! Natalia Arizona

Obviously It's all individual choices, but I don't think short hair is always such agood idea. I wear almost shoulder length with a fringe. And yes,it is dyed in my natural colour to cover grey streaks. Here in Germany many hairdressers want to cut the hair of women over 50 short, but in all honesty on many women this looks very maskuline and unflattering. -There are exceptions.

I think your ideas are marvelous - with one exception: I have long, white hair and it suits me well. When my hair was short I looked 10 years older! But I think it's an individual call. I also love to wear button down, masculine shirts. I have a big bust and try to minimize it just a little so men actually look into my eyes instead of at my chest. BTW, I just purchased a moto jacket in darkish blue. Love it! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.

My belief is that it is all in the cut, and a great stylist is pure gold. It is easy to frame the face without compromising too much of the length. Gaging from your profile photo, I think your face would look lovely framed by your hair, and you wouldn’t have to compromise on the length to get that effect. I will send great thoughts and vibes that you will find an amazing stylist if and/or when you decide to take the leap. ❤️❤️❤️

I remember my mum and my nan having their hair coloured - it was like a helmet with no natural difference of nuance. I sweared I would never do that, and I haven't. So do I. I've white hair, transitionef to it 3 years ago, a bob, and I never looked younger since my 60ies. I've heard that people think my white is very expensive made by my hairdresser, but no, it's made by nature and I'm proud of that color. Thus, with short hair I looked older and "like the others", so I was told. Love your tips and totally agree about the long grey hair! However, pixie cuts are not for everyone. Marie-Anne you have a beautiful bone structure and no double chin! A lot of women here in Oz wear very short haircuts when they are older and overweight, it's for convenience I think. In Australia the neck can get very wrinkled with the sun too. In any case, if your jawline is less than perfect, some longer hair to frame the face and soften the edges doesn't hurt.

I am 71 years old, going on 37, (in my head and heart) and taking my time about it! I love most of your tips for French chic and a freshness to one's style, but I dislike leather anything, especially jackets: had one years ago, found it way too hot (not in a good way) to wear here in our African climate! I also do not enjoy wearing anything masculine, as I really enjoy being a girl! The exception is a well tailored black blazer - this smartens up anything for a meeting! Currently, here at the end of our springtime, our temperatures are in the low 30 degrees Celsius already, so I am wearing a youthful, sleeveless white crinkle cotton dress with a turquoise mesh cover up. (My arms are really ugly, so I need to keep them covered.) And flat nude sandals.....already this morning someone told me I look like a cool drink, full of freshness! I cut my hair to a very short layered bob, and it looks lovely and is cooler to wear. And yes, I wear dark wash denims, but not when our temps are so high! (My other 3 summer dresses are colourful: one blues and white, then a pink hued print with touches of blue, very bright, and a kind of tropical print that somehow works. I always get compliments......HAPPY! And I am always ready to see clients during my unpredictable studio hours....

I would say that by the time we are 40 you know what looks best on your body and as we age, even small tweaks can make you look and feel current. Everyone has seen those women that still style their hair and dress as if they are perpetually 20. Accentuating all your physical assets at one time is what a girl does to draw attention to herself, knowing how to emphasize and dress those assets is what a woman does to be memorable!

I'm not watching your video because I'm frumpy or because I have grey hair (though I do have grey hair lol). Colouring hair the same depth as when you're 30 is never flattering to an older complexion, it's better to go a couple of shades lighter to reflect light around the face as darker shades can enhance shadows and blemishes, that's the reason my shoulder length coloured blonded hair has been left to grow out to graduated Silver Ash Grey/Blonde, which I wear in a fluffy loose top-knot with wispy sides, I feel more groomed and elegant than I have in years, it's not necessary to cut hair short but it is essential to groom it. I wear age appropriate clothing which a younger person would equally be able to adapt. I've picked up so many tips from French style dressing, (I do have French ancestry in my dim & distant past) maybe it's in my DNA 😁....I do understand what you're saying about the frumpy look, I had a short period of chaotic frumpy dressing it's that menopausal transitional period in my experience, where we're looking for comfort and style may go out the window. Since my late 50's I've now found the perfect formula of both and never been so happy in my own skin, thanks to confident ladies like you & others, because dressing with confidence is the ultimate key!

I think the biggest problem for women of any age with long hair is the styling. Very few women (especially over 50) have hair that is truly wash and wear. Hair tends to get thinner and limper or courser and frizzier as we age. Long hair takes more effort and time to style. Too often I see women with their long hair pulled back in a haphazard pony tail. I always know it's time to get a haircut when I'm wearing it in a pony tail more often than not. I think it's better to have a shorter style that takes less time to style and can go a day or two between shampoos so it always looks good. Good hair, good skin, sunglasses and lipstick can take you anywhere looking chic!

Thank you, Marie-Anne, for such wonderful tips. I want you to know that I returned to a shorter pixie hairstyle in part by how chic you look in yours. Your last tip, "think young" really is a great one...I honestly don't know if some ladies even know how, I see so many frowns on ladies in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. May I add that smiling makes a woman of any age look younger. Also, the way a woman carries herself with her posture, which if it's slouchy, etc., it can make her look very old. I saw a couple of ladies (i'm guessing) younger than I am, and they were both walking slumped, heads hung low, and shuffling their feet with sour looks on their faces (they might have been related, come to think of it, their walking style was so similar), and they both looked SO old! The moto jackets in the boutique stores sell out fast. I like the suggestion of masculine shirts, it is a ubiquitous dress code with the astute business world. I lean towards natural, it's the skincare and hair and nails I am picky about and spend on. I do love lipstick. So I think there is nothing too damaging to a more youthful look with hair colour and longer locks if the hair is healthy. I wonder Marie Anne if castor oil with peppermint at the scalp externally, and saw palmetto or getting enough inositol, choline and PABA internally might keep thinning hair at bay as we mature. Where I live, it is hard to find healthy food with a lot of nutrients-most all agriculture does not let the land rest and it is over-tilled so I have become a pill popper so to speak and my hair is still thicker, not as thick as 25 years ago, but it is thicker. American women over a certain age tend often to keep their hair long. I disagree with this trend for most women as it tends to age them tremendously. I was a victim of this trend for some time and have, in the past few years, moved toward a face framing shag and it has taken years off of my look. Also, I tend to wear dresses as opposed to pants and they are very feminine and soft. I often top this with an amazing coat or jacket. I am quite tiny, so I have to be careful about too much bulk when I layer. I believe I am doing fairly well in this regard. As to jeans, I own some, but during COVID I gained some middle weight and must find a decent fitted pair for my new frame. 😁

@@andreaowens9267 I personally wouldn’t go so far as to say over the age of 35, because at age 35 I was still being mistaken for a teen and carded everywhere I went but most definitely the long hair look just doesn’t seem to work on most of the more mature faces, though I do know some amazing older women who are able to rock the look, they are very, very few and far between. It wasn’t until I hit my mid fifties (I am currently 58) that it became a more severe and aging look for me personally. The frame of the shag softens my face and gives me a more “youthful” appearance. However, I have worn bangs for literally years. I believe I first began wearing bangs at around age 45. To be honest, I prefer a shorter look on most women regardless of age. Depending on the cut I tend to find it more refined and classy. But that’s just me. 😁

I enjoy telling people that in 3 years I'LL BE 70 -- yes, I flaunt it and love it! You should see the admiring glances I get in response. I love wild and wacky colorful socks for all occasions. I've gone to the big boys shop for tailored slacks and button down shirts that suit all. Suggestion: if you haven't done so already, how about doing a video on dressing TOO YOUNG. Unfortunately, I've seen lovely ladies of all ages who dress like they are still skinny mini teens from decades ago. Merci for all of your help and upbeat attitude.

Agreed 100%! Aging with Grace doesn’t mean pretending you’re still in your 20’s or 30’s. I see so many women, especially those with teen and young adult daughters, dressing like their kids. You know, ripped jeans, mini skirts, etc. You always look best in quality pieces that flatter your figure. I was in Paris in September and paid particular attention to how older women dressed. Thanks to you I was very frequently mistaken as a French woman, which I consider such a compliment!

I am 73 and I let my grey hair grow out during Covid lockdown. I love the freedom of not dying my hair. My hair is just touching my shoulder and I can wear it up or down and is very helpful when exercising or cooking. It has long layers that keep it from being drawn down around my face. My biggest problem with lighter hair is my dark brown eyes look intense. My dark hair balanced the color. Thanks for the youthful tips. I love a pop of color in my handbags. I get more compliments on them than my expensive jewelry. I change my bags frequently and carry minimal things.

Hi Marie Anne, Thanks for your tips. I wear a lot of jeans with various tops, learning to tuck them in differently for some visual interest. I happen to love cardigans however and they fit into my lifestyle and they work well in a colder climate. Can you possibly do a video on wearing a cardigan with a modern twist or French twist? Thank you!

Justin Hickox, a hairdresser, has lots of videos on his channel of hairstyles for older women. Some women can look good with longer hair, some not. Less to do with age and more to do with condition of the hair and face shape. My 30 year old neighbor had long, thin, dark hair which made her look nondescript. She cut it off very short and dyed it blonde. She looked amazing!

Marie great video. You have helped me so so much. My question is regarding canes. I have to use them. I'm 59. Do u suggest using a classic wooden or neutral one or fancy patterned ones. It seems to me the solid plain ones look more expensive but they do look " elderly" I use ones with patterns but sometimes people remark on the cane and I'm not sure what I feel about it

Such great tips! I can never go grey given my fine, thin, hair. But am envious of those women with the longer, thick, silvery grey hair! I’ve found that embracing my curly hair, and keeping it shoulder length, has had a youthful effect. Love the socks and of course your sweet dog!

My absolutely white hair is as thick as ever. It is naturally curly, I wear it halfway and am always envied for it. I find sneakers, masculine leather jackets and all patterned socks clunky, ugly and not chic in all age groups. And believe me, it doesn't make you look a year younger! Smile! With a smile you have at least a positive effect, you make your surroundings happy and maybe you look a little younger, if that's important.

Very good tips Marie-Anne. I think it’s always good to review your haircut. Mine is a bit long at the moment, just below my shoulders but it’s healthy, especially since I don’t use straighteners etc. Hairdressers have been inundated since we came out of lockdown so it’s hard to get an appointment. I still colour my grey hair and whenever I get rid of those greys I feel so much better! Hairdressers have always said my hair should be below my jaw line. They all say the same. A long bob is the shortest I will have it. I’ve always fancied trying a pixie cuts but I know it just wouldn’t suit me. You’re so right about thinking young. The thing is, most of us feel young on the inside. We just have to reflect that on the outside. 😊. I always appreciate hearing about European trends in colours and seasonal trends. Always a good way to feel up to date. :) You looked great in the red dress with the jacket and boots. I very much liked the handbag you were modelling too! Merci!

I wouldn’t wear it short but shorter yes . Have fly away wavy hair , it’s tricky . Yes you guys sometimes do dress slightly masculine . Aussies love dresses, colour , slightly more feminine I think . Modified Boho is popular here . Classic style isn’t so common . I like your tips , Agree adding fun accessories is modern styling 💕
