It really surprises me that people don't know how to behave in other countries. It is so easy to learn how to blend in with the local populace that it is truly lazy and ignorant when people don't do that. I have lived in Geneva, London, and Sao Paulo and I could tell the tourists (especially Americans), immediately. In fact, in Brazil, natives can tell Americans just by the way we walk. Honestly, as an American of French descent, lifelong New Yorker, I agree with almost everything you said here. It must come naturally, be in the blood. I can’t stand the trashy, plastic, and vulgar influencer look that Miami and LA have popularized and exported to the world. I can’t stand logos, monograms, or advertising of any kind on clothing or accessories. Even where I live now you almost never see women dressed like that, except maybe in a club, and obvious plastic surgery isn’t so common either. Where I might differ with you is in the area of casual wear. I have my own personal style and it might not be acceptable in Paris, but if I’m comfortable in sneakers and cargoes with a nice T-shirt on a hot day, I won’t be switching to a flowered dress and heels. That’s what I’d wear regardless of style guidelines. And although French style recommends this, I can’t stand jeans with heels. Jeans are a rugged item, the origins are American farm wear, overalls. To make them tight like leggings and pair them with heels is a total turn off, very square and corny to me. Some Americana styles are cool, gritty, inventive, and real and belong in the spectrum of meaningful fashion choices. I wouldn’t want to be bullied or peer pressured into a homogenized concept of fashion. New York, London, Milan, and Paris are all fashion centers that I draw from. You are so right about the fragrances, though, those cheap fragrances are sickening.

I can’t stand all those sweet, spicy, fruity or herby, food-smell perfumes that everyone is wearing here in the US. I don’t want to smell like someone’s breakfast muffin, I want to smell like flowers. I can’t find a single floral-scented body wash anymore. Anais Anais has been my fragrance for more than forty years, I’ve never found another that I love even half so much. It is just The One, I knew it at first sniff. Sadly, Cacharel long since discontinued the layering formulas, like the lotion and powder, in this fragrance. I miss them so much, especially the shower gel. The French make the best perfumes, having the flowers to use, and the expertise and experience of hundreds of years. Cheap perfumes from elsewhere are made of chemical “analogs”, they lack the complexity and subtlety of genuine flowers. (I include grasses, leaves and other plant ingredients in “flowers” here).
