As a child of the 70’s, we didn’t snack. Maybe a 12 oz soda every few days, but mealtime was mealtime. My mother and grandmother used to say “the kitchen is closed” if you tried to grab something after dinner and after the kitchen was cleaned. This was about six o’clock. Fast forward to being 18 in 1989, stuffing bran muffins or bagels covered in margarine in our faces thinking we were going to be so healthy. Gained 130 lbs in the 1990s and I’m just now loosing it by going back to telling myself “the kitchen is closed”.

That, and it’s easier “as a couple” to enter this lifestyle, and that it’s harder if one of you wants to change, while the other wants to maintain the status quo. I’m so grateful my hubby, was in with us fasting, not eating carbs (including home made bread 😞), refined foods, eating out, and loads of home made baked goods (yes, I’m a great cook lol). It’s paid off in March it’ll be a year, and we EACH have lost 75 pounds ~ that’s 150 pound person between us. lol So happy, and over the moon thrilled with our progress. At first I told myself this is better than the popcorn I used to eat. Last month I stopped night time eating and changed the que. So, instead of sitting there struggling with not having a snack, my brain says now is the time to feel relaxed with beautiful aroumas.

There are two factors here. 1- as everyone seems to notice, we were always on the move outside. 2- I don't know besides the fact we ate at home. My families had gardens. No processed food. We did NOT EAT ALL DAY LONG. Breakfast in the morning. Then lunch. After school snack. Dinner. Maybe eve snack. Portion control definitely. Slice of pie. Not the whole pie. So the intermittent fasting plays a part of your body getting a break from processing food all of the time. 24hr a day grazing is killing us,now that I am understanding the insulin. I went to a weight specialist in Palo Alto when I was 13 and he put me on a diet program with no oil no white flour no white sugar I lost weight and looked and felt the best. I was a young teenager in the late '60s. Because I had overweight siblings, I made my own plan: eating reasonable portions at mealtimes (no second helpings, never any gravy, and minimal candy and pastries), and exercising before bed. It worked without giving me an eating disorder. Note: I did this without saying anything to my family as any remarks about being overweight were taboo.

Right now I am fasting during the week (Monday-Friday), and feasting on the weekend. When I say feast, I still eat keto, but really make sure I get my leafy greens. My carbs are mostly coming from vegetables, and then I top my salads with steak, shredded cheese, and avocado. I eat scrambled eggs for breakfast. I find it easy to fast during the week because I work in daycare and my days are fast paced. I go for a walk on my hour break instead of eating.

After having been obese for many years, I started with Intermittent Fasting and a Low Carb diet. I treated sugar and simple starches as a poison to be avoided at all costs. It took me about 14 months to reach normal weight (BMI < 25). After I reached normal weight, I decided to skip breakfast every day anyway. It was such a time saver in the mornings to skip it, so that habit stayed. While maybe not necessarily, I still do OMAD (One Meal A Day) twice a week. After 3 months, I have NOT gained the weight back. I've also noticed that I have a lot less interest in eating sweets.

Dr. Fung you have hit the nail on the head. We don’t have to look too far in the past to understand why obesity was not an epidemic back then. Children and adults were healthy, lean and full of energy because eating was a scheduled activity that required someone in the family to cook a meal and put it in the table. Fasting happened automatically as there were no ready packets to reach out for. Today’s snacking culture driven by the food industry and the resulting diet industry which keeps suggesting new ‘super foods’ literally feed off each other!

1 thing that almost never gets mentioned is that the food in the 1970ies was a lot more nutritious so people could eat less and feel full. Now the food is bland and doesn't have a lot of nutrition anymore (soils are depleted, chemicals and additives are added) so people eat a lot more to feel 'satisfied'.
@Intoxicanna

Food (natural) is not bland today. Your taste buds have been conditioned by all of the additional chemicals put in foods. So when you eat cucumbers or apples or berries they do not taste good because you have had too many chemicals in prepared foods and you cannot taste properly...

I looked into usda organic gardening methods as I grow a quarter acre garden for the last 7 years. Certified organic foods cannot be grown with chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides or herbicides like roundup or GMOs. The soils must be replenished with old methods. You can buy organic. It does taste better. I ofset this cost by growing my own part of the year or eating less. The good food is still out there thanks to certified organic.

@@Intoxicanna Foods are bland today. The typical cucumbers, apples, or berries (and especially tomatoes) in the grocery store grown by modern farming methods tastes like soap next to an organically grown tomato. The 70s into the 80s was the transition period. In the 60s, our foods were practically organic compared to foods today. The basic issues today: The food supply is just plain toxic (not just from ultra-processing but also from modern agricultural methods) and people eat too frequently through the day.

Hi Jason, Your videos are very helpful and I appreciate them. I was born in 1948 and we did not snack. We sat down at the table and ate balanced, "colorful" (lots of different colored vegetables as much as possible) meals 3 times a day and that was it. Television was no bit deal because only a few programs were of interest and we mainly watched those at night (Playhouse 90, The Life of Riley, etc.)with no snack because we had already eaten at the table. Throughout my childhood, I pretty much played outside (clamped on roller skates - that came loose then we had to put them back on our shoes, Hula Hoops even came out when I was about 8 years old, refrigerator boxes were prized because we, kids, could do so much with them, and the list could go on and on. So much fun!! By the time the 1970's rolled around and I was turning 30 in 1978, it was still 3 healthy meals a day. We still ate our meals at the table - no snacks. So, I am turning 74 in November and needing to fast because at work meetings, guess what....I learned to snack.

The #1 thing is planned and structured diet, because the only way for your body to burn fat is to use it as energy. Basically, you need to eat below your energy maintenance level (in terms of calories) and your fat cells will be used to compensate the missing energy (calories). That's how your body works. There are other things to consider as well, such as hormonal status, diseases... but caloric deficit is a must. You have a lot of online diet planners and calculators, for example dietarize... Losing weight is just a simple math, really...

I was 357 lbs at my worst. I was able to lose a bit of weight--37 lbs--with traditional dieting over teh course of about 5 years. But since starting IF I have lost an additional 85 lbs in the past 7 months.

I’ve been required to watch your obesity code lecture series for a college class I’m in. I’m actually enjoying them a lot and they’re motivating me to lose weight in a healthy way. Diet culture is so toxic and I’m trying to find a way to lose weight that doesn’t give into it. I’m still afraid to try fasting, I just want to make healthy habits instead. Thank you Dr. aging for giving us advice based in science and not diet culture.

Kathryn, I used to think I would miss breakfast so much, but it turns out I can do without it, perfectly. My breakfast is now at lunchtime. ( I do 16:8 by the way. ) , drink lots of tea to bridge that gap and I try lo lower my carbs and eat healthier breakfasts. It is okay. Just give it a go. These videos of dr. Fung are a great help, I agree.

Hi. If you like Dr Fung’s advice, try fasting. Push back your first meal in the morning so that you can have a fasting period of 12 to 16 hours. It allows your hormones to function properly. Try it. Remember hunger comes in waves and will go away after a bit. After your fasting window, then eat healthy choices for your other two meals. It will make a huge difference in your health. 👍🏼🤠😎

Even in the seventies I had afternoon snacks, then supper. Then we kids ran or biked everywhere we went. If we had the internet, computers and games then, I'd be 400+ pounds by now.

Growing up on a farm way out in the country, we ate at home most of the time. Any snacks or desserts we had in the house were homemade. And we usually only baked on the weekends and maybe if we had company. If we were hungry between meals, we'd get an apple or pear that we grew on the farm. Occasionally on Safurday we'd head for the drugstore for a cherry coke or a milkshake and a teen magazine. Yes, and sometimes if money was tight, we'd get 2 straws and share our treat with a friend.

Now, I grew up in the 70's, and we did have snacks, like after school. But what we didn't have was computers, smartphones, mass video games, mass fast food........... Even when we went to Disneyland, mom had sandwiches and such in the cooler we'd eat for lunch. You walked or rode bike to a play with a friend. We were more physically active in my youth. Some VR is going to help with that though. My son uses a game called Beatsaber to get excercise, and burns a LOT of calories doing so. So the modern world needs some tweeking to get back on track

You must continue with thyroid no matter what you weigh, please consult your physician, it is very dangerous to stop talking thyroid medication. It has nothing to do with your weight.

Dr. Funk you have changed my life and saved it. I needed to hear this video today especially cause I realize like I’m having a huge problem with my sugar addiction. I have been fat since I was about one-year-old I ate all the wrong foods and snacked and snacked and snacked and I am almost 75 years old. Thank you so much for this video you need more credit than is given to you for what you are doing in this world the fasting is the only way

Thank you for being straight to the point. A lot of times you see titles that proclaim the you only need to do 1 thing and the weight melts off. You see the length of the video and it's over an hour and a half! I don't want to listen to anything else except that 1 thing you have to do to lose weight!

i started over a month ago at 220 and today i'm at 190. goal is 120 which i hope to hit near the end of the year. going with intermittent fasting keto -- bacon or grass-fed beef and eggs with arugula every day (never get tired of it) -- and then fasting every other day with 48-hr fast over the weekend which i break with shrimp and riced cauliflower. just couldn't be easier.
