I started training Muay Thai when I was over 300 lbs and in a really dark place. I started in November and on my birthday in April my coach stopped the class to sing me happy birthday. I'll never forget how excited he was saying "This guy came in here and transformed into a completely different person, his physique changed, he's completely changed, he's going to a great fighter." Learning this about Kahlil makes me respect him way more.

My mma journey started nearly 3 years ago when I faced “the real world” meeting manipulative girlfriends, intimidating roommates, and believing I wasn’t any good. After almost taking my life I told myself I had to change my mentality or else I would die. I did and about a year later I fought an ammy fight, and 7 months after that I seriously dedicated myself and eventually broke my arm. I didn’t stop, I just kept going so I wouldn’t fall back into the pit. Now I’ve competed dozens of times in various martial arts, I have many friends from this community, I get to coach and corner people, and I have a girlfriend who supports me. Whatever you do, don’t let failures define you bc we all have ups and downs. Tell yourself you’re gonna get the next best thing and give it your heart. I was in a major depressive episode for those 3 years but I guarantee you that it’s all worth it and id do it again if it meant understanding more from the journey.

I intend to fix it. I never wanted to be close to 300lbs. Now my clothes are ripping. I'm almost 2 months in and the results are pretty interesting. My strength is back, but I'm pushing myself and sweating. My diet changed mostly, gotta keep changing and adjusting. It will be slow, but steady and worth it. I also want to graduate from college in 2025.

I was heavy in high school (260+ lbs) but could play it off because I threw shot put. A few years out I was still big but not really working out anymore. My moment came when I was tying my boots for work and my gut was getting in the way and made breathing difficult. It didn't turn around all at once but I slowly started building the good habits (drinking water everyday, walking more). I knew I had to add those things slowly or I'd just give up or get overwhelmed. All that to say, be honest with yourself and do it how YOU need to, not how you think others would do it. Some people can flip the switch, others are slow starters. Either way, just focus on always moving forward

Hes right about it motivating you when people notice youre changing. At 19 i was 280, granted i was 6'5 so it didn't look that bad but still. I started working at UPS and that thing was brutal. Imagine being stuck in an oven for 7 hours loading boxes, thatll make you lose weight. I did that for a couple months and one night i was talking to my uncle amd he looked at me and said "mijo are you losing weight?" I hadmt noticed myself so i said "i guess". After that i actually started trying, i cut out all fast food and soda. I got down to 195. Which admittedly is a bit much then i started working construction and put on some muscle. Im 37 now been lifting and eating right and im comfortably at 230. It does help when you have people motivate you but sometimes you gotta motivate yourself.

My moment was watching body cam footage of the police officer who shot the Allen outlets active shooter. Here was a man who responded in a way I think we all wish we would, heard and sees what happening and takes action immediately, unfortunately due to the area he’s in it’s really hard to discern where the shots are actually coming from, so he takes off on what is essentially a fully kitted out 5-6 min run towards the sound of gunshots. Luckily he was able to get there and do what needed to be done, but right before the footage cuts when his back up shows up you see him take a long hard sigh and sit down in exhaustion. I realized I had just witnessed a man reach his physical limit in an act of bravery, and no matter how hard he tried his body was going to fail him and that terrified me. I’ve since cleaned up the diet, cut back on the booze, and started CrossFit.

Combat sports are the biggest HACKS to lose weight. Most people go to the gym as fitness for their main goal without focusing on progression. Combat sports, any sport really but combat sports does it better imho, makes you forget completely about fitness and you will focus entirely on progression, fitness will just be a byproduct. I lost over 20 pounds over 6 months of MMA (and lots of running). I can’t stress it enough. Find a gym that you like and go! Nothing beats the feeling of seeing improvements in your technique, having better rounds or just being able to perform better at every class. You will forget you came to lose weight, and you will focus solely on being a better martial artist. Trust!

Don't do the same thing every time then. You are attracted to variety, nothing wrong with that. Think of fun stuff that just happens to give you good exercise, like hiking in beautiful places. I like juggling devil sticks, gardening, and biking. I also like intermittent fasting. For whatever reason it works for me because it's a not-doing, not a doing. It simplifies my morning, no food, just some liquids to get the bowels moving. I keep with it because eating in the morning makes me feel worse than fasting. So many subtle benefits aside from the bodyfat control.

You’ve just gotta do something until you see results. Start weight lifting and keep doing it until you feel yourself get stronger. Start running and do it until you feel yourself feeling less out of breath and going further. Fight and do it until you notice that you’re beating people. Once you see the results you become addicted - you only need the “discipline” for like 3 months, then you become an addict.
