Excellent presentation. I use this method for my 1971 pegged Gerundino flamenco guitar. Graphite also works and lasts longer.

Pretty hard to remove a string if the peg won't turn and the string is wound tightly around it
@DJginnypeo

+linda kundell Use a pliers, clip the peg, and turn it. My teacher says as that point, no human arm can turn that peg anymore, so use pliers.

I would be reluctant to try that, especially on a good violin. I find that, if I wait long enough for the temperature and the humidity to change, the peg finally loosens.
@jameswilson1206

Definitely not. You do not want metal on wood. I used to use a pair of snare drum sticks (1A size), but these are hard to find in some music stores. Much more commonly, try some wooden kitchen mixing spoons (if strong enough to not break). The problem is their length, and bumping other pegs.
@TheBinaryWolf

Use a cloth to protect the wood from the pliers, but excess force risks breaking the peg. It sounds violent, but tapping the peg out with a hammer and a piece of dowel can loosen a rigidly stuck peg. An ice pack wrapped in a towel is another option. Luthiers wrap the body of the instrument with a blanket to buffer the trauma to the body when tapping out a locked peg, which indicates uneven wear, usually the result of mixing the pegs.

I have a huge fear of breaking a string right now. I have a solo performance tomorrow and my a string won't righted, I'm afraid while doing this I may mess things up.
@TheBinaryWolf

The string is unlikely to break unless you over-tighten it or use a string stretcher (they undermine the integrity of the strings). In a worst case scenario, replace the string and leave it tuned a tone or three semitones above concert pitch overnight. In the morning, tune the instrument. I keep an old set of strings in my case, in the event of an emergency as old strings don't stretch much.

But if the peg is stuck (will not rotate either directions), how do I remove the string/peg for this method?

To remove a locked peg, secure the head in a vise, cushioned by cloth to protect the finish then tap out the stuck peg with a dowel of smaller diameter and dead blow hammer. The procedure is quite safe. Use bees wax or graphite to prevent the peg from sticking (soap is good but does not last for very long).

This was good and the camera was very clear at showing the string. I heard that you don't let the string go too far out the hole though because it's scrapes up the Peg box or you can clip it off even with the end of the peg

I've only been playing for six months. It is the summer and my teacher is not able to help me. I don't have that much experience and is afraid that if I take it apart I won't be able to fix it. If I take it in to my local music store will they charge me for lubricarting the pegs for my viola? My mom just bought me a $40 tuner and I don't want her to refuse me. I can manage tuning it, all I want is the pegs lubricated.

If your pegs are stuck place them in a small room with a dehumidifier for a couple days. May help especially during summer. If you can, lower humidity very slowly and check the pegs every 6 hours. You're trying to reach early winter humidity. Another way if you're fortunate is to crank up the AC and dehumidify that way.

@Changtent

Too much pressure on the peg can crack the peg box, pls avoid this condition. Most likely either your peg or the hole that it is in is not perfectly round or properly fitted, and needs to be repaired. For sticky or loose peg problems more severe than the video, you need a luthiers help to ream the hole and/or shave the peg. You MUST have proper tools to do this work, don't try it with just sand paper.

+Jim Manson Thank you ! I used a piece blanked to hold and loosen up one peg by one and it worked out just fine, I then applied soap on it one by one and finished the proccess. One thing I did not know is that The violin must be on the horizontal at all times while loosen up tje strings, if We fail do to so, the sound post may fall down from its position, and guess what mine did. To reposition the sound post proper tools are needed. I'm gonna have to take my violin to the luthier anyways after all. Have a great day!

It's normal that you get slippery peg after putting the string on and all we do at this point we push the peg in a little bit while tuning and it'll keep get out of tune maybe for 7 days and then it'll be better. If not working try wiping the hole in the peg box itself or search youtube videos. They're helpful, too

Soap is alkalin. I think this is a questionable method. Alcalinity attacks wood. Use a waxy substance that is as chemically inert as possible. Hill peg wax works pretty good for me. It is a tremendous rip-off, but one of those chap-stick like tubes is about enough for three lifetimes. Will it to your kids.
