Wendi, I'm teaching a 7 year old to sew/quilt and he isn't keen on being poked by the pins - Mashing tape!! I have 1/4 inch masking tape that will work perfectly.Thank you for that tip.
@WendiGratz

For regular sewing (where tape won't work) you can try Wonder Clips. They're fantastic - and no poking. :-)

Wendy your so sweet! Love your videos. A question if I may. I would like to try this bear applique but I was wondering if I could have just the bear in light weight flannel and the block in regular quilters cotton. I'm thinking that kids would love to feel the softness of the bear. (I have lots of flannel scraps too!) Oh wait....no that won't work flannel frays so easily I could never turn it. Perhaps, raw edge?
@WendiGratz
8 жыл бұрын
Actually the tendency of flannel to fray makes me not use it for raw edge applique - but it would work great for the turned edge I use with my freezer paper method. A little starch will help those folds stay in place until you get them stitched down. I've got a post about how I do that here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2013/07/secret-weapon-fabric-behave.html

What kind of presser foot are you using? Thanks
@WendiGratz

It's a clear presser foot. The center of the foot is clear plastic so you can really see what you're doing. It's great for applique!

Hi Wendi-Great Video! I have question. Do you embroider the pupils on most of your animal or monster blocks, or do turned edge applique? I've started my first monsters quilt (shapes are just my designs) on 12 1/2 inch blocks. I'm ready to do pupils and I'm scared because they are so small. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have a whole blog post on different ways to handle eyes. :-) www.shinyhappyworld.com/2017/04/easy-eye-options-applique.html By the way - I most often use fusible adhesive for my applique now, instead of freezer paper and turned edge. The new fusible adhesives are terrific!

You can brush a bit of starch on the fabric that is around the edge. Then it stays a bit firmer when you fold it over the freezer paper.
