Tension and Gauge swatches serve multiple purposes in machine knitting. In this video, you will not only learn how to make them but why you should make them.
I actually created two forms, one for Tension Swatches and the other for Gauge Swatches, so it quick and easy to document my findings. You can download The Twisted Yarns Guide for Creating Tension and Gauge Swatches for FREE which include these forms by following this link: twistedyarns.com/patterns/gui...
If you are trying out a new yarn, tension swatches are the starting point. They are easy to do... just knit 20 or 30 rows at a range of tensions. Mark the tension change by knitting a few rows of contrasting color in between. Tension swatches need to relax at least a few hours or better overnight before assessing them. Sounds easy and it is. But this little exercise is invaluable.
You learn how the knitting looks, feels and behaves when it comes off the machine. Plus, you will be able to identify the "sweet spot tension" where you, the machine and the yarn make friends. This swatch is a great reference so you may want to keep it if the yarn is one that you will use often. Otherwise, once the tension swatch serves its purpose and you've got a perfect Gauge Swatch completed in the same yarn, you can frog the Tension Swatch.
The Gauge Swatch ultimately yields the gauge. The gauge is how many stitches per inch/centimeter and how many rows per inch/centimeter.
You'll learn how the swatches work together!
