I don't get it. You are sitting the rough sawn face against the vice base. No way the cut face will be square with the side faces. You are just machining the two faces parallel with each other.

The first face is only square to the faces touching the jaws. When it is turned over it is rotated 90 degrees and sat on a rod. This sets the lh & rh faces square and the other two touching the jaws are then also square. This second face is now square in both directions. It is then used as the datum face on the surface plate. The top face on the surface plate is not square in both directions. Hope this helps.
