Maxx prepares for the upcoming opener for Dystopia Rising: Pittsburgh. This series of videos will cover everything from costume design to armor, weapons and extras. This is part 4 of the series and covers building a basic baseball bat boffer weapon. The weapon I build is considered "large" in this game, which means it can be used one or two-handed in the game. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon so you don't miss the rest of the videos in this series.
This is probably the easiest style of boffer to make. All you need is a pool noodle or two, some 3/4" CPVC pipe and duct tape. If you want to make it slightly better, you'll need a knife, a little glue and some grip tape. It's cheap, safe and effective and if you do it right, doesn't even look half-bad.
**Anytime you work with knives, be careful not to cut yourself**
Dystopia Rising is a Post-Apocalyptic larp set in a future where zombies and mutants rule the day. Survivors are all basically infected with the disease as well but not consumed by it. The game mixes boffer combat with Nerf gun style combat and is a highly immersive game. Here's a link to the Pittsburgh Site and the National Site if you'd like to learn more about this larp.

So, because it is my first Dystopia Rising larp experience, I have chosen a very simple concept. I chose to play a "Yorker Strain" and "Thug Profession". I'll be using a Bolt Action, a Standard Melee and a Large Melee but not florentine. So, a basic generic fighter type...
I also chose the Yorker Strain because I live in a very sports loving area, we have several repeat championship teams and the people here are crazy! So crazy, that I could totally see that insanity standing the test of time through the apocalypse especially considering the sheer amount of sports items in stores and people's closets. So, using the local flair of the location is what really drove my decision. Plus, this area has a rich industrial history and we even have our own accents and a long list of crazy made up words in our local dialect which will help to solidify this character concept. And I'm excited to play the role. Here's some links explaining our regional dialect, also useful in case I say stuff in my videos and you have no idea what I'm talking about...

This game seems fairly simple in some ways, but very complex in others, so I want to get a feel for the game first which is why I chose a somewhat boring profession. But once I feel like I have the game down, I'll probably switch up characters. Even though I feel I've created an incredibly thoughtful, well designed and deep character concept. Ultimately, it's not me and not something I want to play long term, at least I don't think...
