I wish we could share photos in comments because when you said sticks for a trellis... that's what we do. We put them into a circle and tie at the top. We plant peas & green beans on them and lettuce & spinach underneath. It keeps the cooler crops underneath from bolting too early. We also put chicken wire around poles like the street lamp to get the plants started around the lamp post. We also have reseeding morning glories there and they start out faster than the beans or peas and having them wind on themselves is fine since they're toxic and we don't eat them... but they help the beans tremendously to grab on the pole.

I have alot of bamboo polls and those green stake polls you get at Lowe's. I made a huge bamboo trellis and put it where my beans are growing. Kentucky Wonder. Any ways, they're already climbing up the thing. It took me a bit to make the trellis, with cross polls etc.., to make it sturdy but it's a keeper. Your gardens look good. This is from last year but I was looking at one of your recent videos on tomatoes. I got a late start but the growing season where I live goes all the way into October. We may get a frost by late October.

I save long stems from my garden to use for stakes or trellising. Sunflowers bring in pollinators one year, and provide support the next year (just don't use them to stake pole beans or potatoes, as sunflowers secrete a natural herbicide that will stunt those plants growth. But the real star for me is yucca. Man, those stems are as strong as wood but also super light.

I buy those tomato cages on clearance in the Fall and use them on my pepper plants, they really don't work well for tomatoes but since peppers on grow to 4-5ft they are perfect. If you buy the welded wire 2"x4" fencing that is 60inches high in rolls at the big box stores they make wonderful tomato cages. Dozens by the roll. I grow cucumbers in those cages as well, they last for years so the investment is minimal.

I think I'm paying about $5.50 for new T-posts, but they are a great investment, so useful for multiple projects, and if they don't last 'forever', they will probably still last longer than me! I was just contemplating the dollar value of food to cost of materials ratio .. the bean towers that you can get from the seed companies run $30 dollars and up, my DIY version is about $15 (if you count the stakes). If beans are $1/lb, that means the seed company's product will take 8 years to reach a break-even point, and mine are still going to be costing me money up to 4 years. Having long-term trellises and towers is nice, but definitely, don't let the idea that you need expensive gadgets be a barrier to getting food growing. People have been growing food for thousands of years with hand cut poles and hand wound cordage .. and that stuff is still free!
@ScottHead
4 жыл бұрын
Very true, I used to see big tree limbs used to grow beans at my grandmother's place, and in y childhood neighborhood, a guy just let his vines crawl up nails tacked into his fence. I really liked your monster trellis, one of these days I will get some cattle panel and then that will make a nice lasting investment.
@Green.Country.Agroforestry
4 жыл бұрын
@@ScottHead Up front cost, long term utility .. The more I think about it, I should flip those panels on end, cut them in half, and add a few more T-posts, for more stability .. I think I'll do that next year, and add another row of tomatoes. The neighbors are going to get all of my extras before I can even get to market :)

@ScottHead

I'm not sure about the lightning for most garden stakes made of small tubes of metal coated in plastic. I imagine a T-post though would make a nice lightning rod, and its grounded so that's a plus.

Hello Scott! I have been enjoying your vids very much. I do have a bean question though. "Cut Green Beans"....the type you buy canned in the stores. What types of beans are the "cut gbeans? I have been shopping the varieties, but am not sure. My wife is a pretty picky eater and I'm wanting to bring something from the garden that she will enjoy, and she's a "cut" kinda gal. Thanks so much for all your video efforts and sharing all your knowledge!

Those green beans in the can are usually a stringless green bean, you can look for a bush variety that looks similar, wish I had some actual variety suggestions, but I've never grown green beans that were bush varieties that were like canned beans. I think Blue Lake Bush would be a variety to look at. If you don't mind string beans (meaning you have to pull off the string before cooking) then a pole bea like Kentucky Wonder is a good option.
