Nice natural nest box that will not look out of place when set in natural surroundings. Also, thumbs up for NOT adding the seemingly obligatory perch under the entrance hole. Well done mate.

A few tips; Use 2 wires or cable zip ties to hold it all together to make nailing easier, Use stainless deck screws so no rust and won't hurt the tree, Rough up the inside front panel with a chisel across the grain so baby birds can climb out, Put a little dead grass in the bottom, Try different size holes, birds will choose the right one, I would also put some glue on the panels and use a dead log so it won't crack apart when it dries out. I have also used 4" plastic pipe and cardboard tubes, cardboard needs to be waterproofed, I used rubber paint

Excellent video and a safe way to hollow a log!! This is by far the safest process I've seen or even tried. Some use a table saw to repeatedly hollow out the log and it's a hazard in the making. I don't own a froe at the moment but it's on my to buy list now. Thanks for a nice and safe method of making a natural bird house.

Hello Mike, Just love your usage of the hammer hitting the nail. Here in Pennsylvania USA we do not have chestnut trees. The blight got just about all of them. I found a hole in a log when cutting firewood. I will use that to make my birdhouse. I believe it is hickory wood. Nice work and have a good day too. Peace and out. vf

I think the one that Rich is using in this video is sweet chestnut. However, it's prone to splitting, so I prefer to use birch, as it's tougher if properly seasoned. I've made a video on how to make one here kzitem.info/news/bejne/sa2a1YWuiYtkbIo

@@mikepepler The wood didn't split very neatly, I think it's maybe to do with log selection or perhaps the age of the wood. All I've got it's Ash at the moment which splits different perhaps? I used an axe head and whacked it with a heavy mallet.

I gather it's best practice not to have one. If the birds were using a natural hole in a tree there wouldn't be one. When I've watched them, they perch on a nearby branch to check there's no danger before going to the nest.
