@evil-mad-scientist

Joshua Lowrie It's an old idea and mechanism, found in nature and in some other mechanisms. We came up with putting it on a toothbrush, and gave it the name "Bristlebot". We've since learned that people had done this long ago in Russia, and we had merely rediscovered it. :)

So to anyone making one that is confused on how to make it stop going in circles, please learn basic physics. If the motor or battery is leaning to either side AT ALL, there's this handy thing called gravity that makes the bot go in circles. Just re-adjust motor / battery to be perfectley lined up with toothe brush head until perfection. If your having trou

@miatasm If the vibration is too weak, try a different motor or a bigger battery. If it vibrates like crazy but doesn't move forward much, try bending the bristles to be more angled.

I *named* it, but there are plenty of examples of things like this pre-existing. There are animals and plants that use ratcheting bristle motion for locomotion and seed transport (wheat stems come to mind). There are also countless industrial uses-- little strips of angled-bristle materials in copy machines and laser printers that use this process in reverse, to move *paper.* We've also learned that people made similar things to this in Russia in the 1970's.

The angled bristles are of a specifically chosen stiffness such that they flex and store the energy on the back stroke and then straighten and release the energy on the forward stroke, helping to propel the object forward. If the bristles are too soft they will absorb the energy and it is wasted, if they are too stiff they will not flex and store the energy and instead the object is forced backwards on the backstroke. Such as would occur in the invention disclosed in GB2378617

@OffensusGaming so what do the hexbug nanos do that the bristle bot doesnt? this one is much better than a bristle bot because a bristle bot goes in one direction, and in a straight line, requiring space. this one goes in random directions, thus it is better for those who have limited space to make a bristle bot

@juicebab1 The use of the term "robot" here is because it can react to and interact with its environment, e.g., by turning when it hits a wall. This usage of the term is longstanding. If your car would gracefully turn around when it hits a wall, yes, everyone would call it a robot, too.

Check ebay or a local electronics recycler. You might also go to a local 99 cents only store and buy a motorized toothbrush in their dental section. With enough work, you can remove the motor from this toothbrush and attach an off center weight. This can be the essence of your bristle bot. I have found that making the battery contacts is quite difficult and you may wish to source a true battery holder for your battery. Other than that, bristle bots are AWESOME!!!
