So excited to see fellow artist videos! Even though I already work in game studio. Game studio isn't too different. One I need to tell people who interested to work in our industry, you definitely need to be able to draw from very basic like anatomy, shadow, lights. Sometimes internship have style in their drawing, pretty, but can't really draw basic things. We wish for employee who has unique characteristics in their drawing but also able to follow other styles. Cause it will be hard to work with someone who can't follow other artists concept. The last, don't be stubborn. We're working in team. There's no bad or better art or who's the better. Sometimes we need to create very simple design even though we can draw more "beautiful" but We created art together and that's matter. I wish I can make my own videos it will be fun. Cause I love sharing. but I do have anxiety to stay on camera. lol

Idk a lot of other videos I’ve seen on character design don’t recommend putting in life drawings. Tho showcasing you know life drawings by having solid structural character designs that are anatomically correct and on model is key. But actual life drawings…no. Show that skill thru well drawn characters and practice that skill to improve your character design anatomy tho. P.S: take my comment with a grain of salt I am not a character designer just an aspiring one who’s watched a lot of videos on it for research purposes. Also a lot of the other tips beyond that one are 100% useful and good!

"Who patched Aladdin's pants?" 😂 You got me thinking, now!! Probably the lady who said: "I'd blame parents, except he hasn't got them!" (tough exterior, motherly instincts 😂) or the lovely ladies in the scene - no, wait, I actually rewatched it, and it's Abu!! The patch is missing, before Abu jumps across the scene 😲 - Seems to be a mistake, as Aladdin has the patch in the beginning of the movie, but there it is!! Never noticed that, and Aladdin is one of my favourite Disney Movies and Disney Princes (veeery closely after Beast)

I'm a junior in high school and I'm considering animation but the pay outside California, as well as the instability, is unsettling, especially for my parents. Nobody in my family does art, they've all taken engineering or medicine so taking animation seems like a huge risk to everyone including me. I, personally, have an interest in science as well so I'm wondering if it's worth it to take animation instead of something STEM-related that would be manageable for me. Art will always be my first interest but if I'm interested in science as well, isn't it better to take that for the stability in the future?

Hey laura, just yesterday i was wondering about a topic and i see that video is related😁 how to put traditional character exploration drawings to the portfolio? What is the best way to erase the sketchbook background without damaging or losing any parts of traditional drawings? Thank you!
@lulusketches

great question! get the cleanest scan of your drawing that you can (I use an epson scanner), and then pull the file up in photoshop and adjust the "levels" with command+L. try to brighten up the whites until they are a pure white that matches the background layer, and darken down your drawing if it looks faded from the scan. from there I erase everything that I can around the drawing, getting as close to the drawing as possible. hope that helps!!

Hey Laura, great tips. I was wondering, how many pages should be reserved per character? I was thinking two, one page for showing the design proces and one page for the acting and maybe also including a turnaround. Is that a good way to go? That way you can show a lot without overcrowding the pages, but it also doesn't take up too much space in your portfolio? Or do you suggest a different approach in presenting one's designs?

2:23 I usually go with the first design I think of and I am always content. I see a picture of the character in my head and go that's the guy. Then draw him redesigning is great for some people though. Also sometimes when I see behind the scenes art I go how can you reject that that's beautiful.

This was very helpful! But i do have a question, Is it more popular to create a portfolio site, a physical portfolio or a pdf/ebook style portfolio? A lot of people I talked to are very firm on the portfolio site/ physical portfolio, heck I talked to one person and they said that they used to just load up a 100 dollar tablet and drop off their portfolio like that to the company they were applying for. if you don't know, what would you prefer? -Hana

About the character design of Aladdin, if his character design is meant to show his lower-class lifestyle, why is it they chose to have his top to be purple? As far as my knowledge, purple is the colour of wealth and royalty. Basically, not a colour of the pour. Why did they make this choice? In my opinion, his character design shows that he is from a wealthy family (which is not true), but has more fun and is rebellious towards traditional culture (which is semi-true in the movie).

I never know what to do And to create a character design I need weeks to create one But you know... you need be fast in school You said that story is really important But this is my problem I don t have a lot of imagination. My stories are so basic
@echoc7213
5 жыл бұрын
I feel like I had this problem for awhile, and honestly what helped me was to a) if I can't think of what to draw, I study anatomy; arms, hands, joints, torso (both human and animal), poses, etc, and b) I have a sketchbook that I don't show anyone, where if I'm looking at someone's art and I really love the style, or the shapes, or even if I don't know what I like about it, I'll study it a bit then put it away, and redraw it without looking. Generally, the things that stick out to me are what stays in the picture. This all helps to build a visual library that you can call on for designs. So far as designs go, there's also a good app called character design shuffle that's basically the ol' pull ideas out of a hat, just on the phone (age, gender, species, profession, action, etc). Read a lot, and try to design the characters in the stories (if they've already been made into a cartoon/movie don't use those for reference, just keep the image that the story gave you). The biggest thing is to just draw every day. If you keep going, even when the ideas just aren't there, they'll start to come, and it'll get easier and easier for you to just start sketching out ideas, or coming up with stories. Look at people on the street, watch how they move, look at how they dress, and turn them into a character. Or a poodle with a ridiculous haircut. A really fat squirrel. It's okay to pull from the world around you; don't feel like you have to come up with all these ideas from scratch. That's so intimidating and detrimental to your art. Also, if you keep telling yourself you don't have imagination and your ideas are basic, it'll be hard to ever get past that. You're learning. We're all learning. Just keep working at it and have fun drawing, and the rest will come. Sorry, that was a story. But I've been there. Still go there. And I'm still learning. Good luck!

I am decent at character design. Basically as long as you follow the formula and stay within the guide lines you can do what you want. *Family Guy style* Make the clothes plain , make the eyes round and half closed all the time 3 fingers. The hardest style is classic Disney. It's very hard for me to figure out. There are so many things I don't get and the movies have subtle differences. And Pixar the main characters are always simple but the style is hard to describe.
