Hi everyone! In this easy to follow Bonsai Video I show you How To Make a Clump Style Bonsai also known as a "Kabudachi".
A Kabudachi, Clump Style, or Multi-Trunk Bonsai is created when multiple trees are planted close together in a pot until they fuse together at the base, becoming one tree. The term "Kabudachi" specifically denotes a planting with five or more trunks. There are distinctions such as "Sokan" for those with two trunks and "Sankan" for those with three trunks in a planting.
Traditionally, odd numbers of trees are favoured for their natural asymmetry and visual interest; however, do not let this tradition limit your creativity! Even numbers of trees can also look great.
In this video, I am using Japanese Maple seedlings to create this clump style. I cover the various Bonsai tools and wire used to create a clump style, as well as the techniques that can be implemented for a more pleasing overall aesthetic and to get the seedlings to fuse efficiently and safely, without the risk of any wire scars at the bottom. The method I am showing you is what has always worked for me and I believe is the easiest and best way for beginners!
