stoked I found your detailed yet easy to follow instructions on mitt and hat making. my mitts got stolen this past winter 🤬 i loved my beaver mitts in the cold iowa winter. got an abundance of tanned pelts so asap I'm making me a pair as soon as I get the correct thread for the job

Happy you found the videos helpful; choose your tread to the thickness of hide. I would have went with a thinner thread for coyote than what I used. It was overkill for the thickness of the hide. The tread I was using in retrospect would be more suitable for deer perhaps;)

Thanks for sharing.This looks like a fresh pelt cause it rips easily; can the same be done with an older pelt that's drier? And what do you do with the left over pieces? Can I have them : )
@SaskHunting
8 жыл бұрын
+seeamerica1 Yes it was as a freshly tanned pelt. I don't see any problems with a drier pelt as long as it's flexible. I save the pieces for any additional trim needed:)

You can sew pelts with glovers needle, it'll go much faster and won't make the huge holes with the awl.

How many fishers would it take to make this hat? Would one male be enough?
@SaskHunting
6 жыл бұрын
Not sure, but it takes at least one XXL coyote pelt.
@randymastin9612

It would take at least three and more likely four. You would also have a lot of different lengths of hair depending on which end of the Fisher you used.

How hygiene is that?
@SaskHunting
2 жыл бұрын
If there was any bacteria or mold present, the hat would start to rot. This happens when water is present; ensuring the hat dried off after it becomes wet is important. This is why I left a portion of the seem open at the back of the hat. If the hat becomes soaking wet, you can turn it inside out to dry the interior.
