The mushroom is actually beneficial. Smiths prefer a rounded edge on their anvils for bending curved pieces. Sharp edges on anvils create indentions on work and/or cold shuts which mar work and can lead to cracks. Mushrooming is, of course, a problem in that it can cause sharp pieces to break off if hit directly.
