@Tazawa Tanks, I used cement without producing concrete, aka without its aggregate. Just the cement powder. My first mixture was watery, to get into all the pours. Just wipe it on, let it cure for 24-48 hours. Perhaps quicker if it is warm out. Since this layer doesn't really add any structural strength. The second mixture was thicker but still easy to brush on. Working it into the crevices etcetera. Till I eventually, did my third layer which was a thicker mixture with a bit of sand aggregate. I do not think it is very important to think about the curing process when you work with such thin layers. What is important is the purpose of your usage. If you use it within a tank set-up with a closed water system. You have to typically pay attention to the fact that Concrete wicks a lot of moisture. Two, it produces a lot of alkalinity. Which is good for certain types of shrimps and snails. But one might want to do like 4-5 full water changes before it is Okay for fish or so. I suggest putting in some pest snails as a 'control group'. They are hardy enough and they clean it. A tip that I have is, when applying the last coat. Try to dab with a brush to make the surfaces less smooth. You can also use super glue and a tea bag string as an anchor point to create extra outsticking shapes. As a reinforcement. It will harden nicely over time and since it is a tea-string. You don't need to worry about rust. There also exist colour powder for concrete that can be good to know. Especially, if you want patches of brown. You can apply that at the end with a thinner cement coat and a bit of aggregate. That way, you don't need to worry too much about mixing potential paints into the background that might not play too well with water. Since you might need to apply a clear coat which is veeery shiny and beats the purpose of concrete.

Hey buddy, I watched this video, as well as the other two, several times. I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed thus far. It looks like it is going to turn out pretty awesome. By the way, back in my weight lifting days, I did a few workouts at Powerhouse Gym in San Diego about 15 years ago before they changed to their current new name. Brings back a lot of great memories. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to part 4 👍.

Great step by step Zenzo! Have you ever considered using Terra Cotta pots for caves? You might actually be able to put suction through the wholes in the bottom of the pots to hold in place and make it easier to remove and clean if needed. you could also angle them for plants if desired. Just a thought! Keep up the great works!

That is a great idea. The only issue I would have is the aesthetics. I guess if the foam covers the pot, that would work.

I use to work with concrete and one of the reason why it can crack is if you keep adding water to it while it's trying to cure, best to make small batches in this situation I recommend.

Hello. Thank you for inspiring myself and others to try making our own DIY 3D aquarium background. (Very well done video and background, thank you). I believe I have all the needed supplies, with the exception of the cover placed over hole to allow water flow to the intake behind the background. Where do you find the the covers you install so fish stay on one side, water flows through the hole with the part I am asking about (intake cover?) in background. I love your tanks and this diy background! I would be working on my background now if I knew how to make or buy that one last item... Please and thank you for your assistance. I look forward to hearing from you and others on this matter.

Yes, in the beginning. It's really good to let your tank run, watch your PH, water change, run it some more (pumps and such to circulate it around), change water again, repeat until stabilized.

I'm curious about how long the foam last being submerged in a tank. I have used it in my outdoor pond and it started degrading after about 2 yrs. Maybe from being exposed to sunlight?
@TazawaTanks

That’s probably due to the sun. I have not had any degradation issues indoors.

Did you use cement or concrete? It looks like cement to me and you used the two terms kinda interchangeably a couple times, but as I understand it, isn't concrete with a gravel aggregate, whereas cement is purely the substance that sticks things together? Also please correct me if I'm just wrong
@TazawaTanks

Yes, but when I mixed it with all of the sand it becomes concrete.

@@TazawaTanks so then if one wanted to do this themselves they should buy cement and mix their own sand in, or would you ever recommend a premixed concrete?

You can cement the back of you want to make it heavier, but it will make the silicone process more difficult. The car under the cover is an E92 M3. The white car is an E82. I don’t autocross. I do occasional track days. I used to race motorcycles and karts.
