How to make a fabric coil basket with The Craft Corner in collaboration with Zero Waste Maynooth.
This is a sustainable sewing project aimed at helping you reduce your fabric waste, finding a home for all those small fabric scraps that you have kept for just this reason.
And you also end up with a very personalised custom storage basket.
I have now made several of these in different sizes and shapes. You can adapt the size, based on how big you make your base, that will decide the diameter.
I have gotten several questions about whether you can make these on a sewing machine and you absolutely could. My design is based on ones I have seen of rope coil baskets which are sewn on a machine using a zig zag stitch. It would of course depend on your machine as it would need to be able to do heavy duty sewing
But I quite like the slow process of the hand sewing. I will work away on a basket over the course of many months, I take it out in the evening and twist and stitch and slowly build the little coil basket as I sit listening to a podcast or watching something on netflix. I like to have my hands occupied and I find the process of these fabric coil baskets very zen to make.
I hope you like this project and it inspires you to make your own. Its very satisfying to save all those little scraps from the waste bin and have a basket at the end that tells its own story
I love to look at mine and say, well that row is my partners old pajamas, thats the bed sheet that got torn, there is my favourite top that finally got too worn to wear.
Clothes that have lived their lives getting another lease on life.
