Keep in mind this only works on wound strings, also the tension you apply to the thread as you wind will affect tone and volume. You can also use a tongue depressor. I would take some sandpaper to the lower end and create a bit of a concave end to insure the strings don’t slip off. Ingenious idea! 👏👏

I searched for "best synthetic material for violin bow hair" and found some helpful suggestions for options that might work better than sewing thread -- FYI.
@steveinman1512
2 ай бұрын
From BING: "When it comes to synthetic materials for violin bow hair, Zarelon™ and Coruss are two of the most highly recommended options. Zarelon™: This synthetic hair is known for its durability and consistency. It offers better grip on the strings, doesn’t stretch, and is unaffected by changes in humidity and temperature. Zarelon™ is also praised for its longevity, often lasting much longer than traditional horsehair. Coruss: Developed to address the declining quality of horsehair, Coruss synthetic hair is made from durable fibers that are not affected by humidity or temperature. It can be played for several years without needing a rehair and is available in various colors. Both options provide reliable performance and are great alternatives to traditional horsehair, especially for those looking for a more consistent and durable solution."

That is an interesting idea, but why do we need the cable tie? Wouldn't it be exactly the same with out it?
@MrHardguitar
8 ай бұрын
If you do not use a cable tie, the binder will lean to one side. Accordingly, on one side the thread will hang from with tension (as it should be), and on the other side the thread will simply lie on the ruler.

@@MrHardguitar I am guessing that a thicker thread may work better. Also, look for different types of thread (different materials) and experiment. As one example, I believe there are sewing repair kits for tents, for hikers and campers, that may have a thicker/stronger thread.

I tried to diy using cotton thread. Even after applying rosin , and bow, the sound was very soft on the wire wound strings. Then I manage to get a genuine horse hair type of fiddle stick and tried , it's loud on all the guitar strings. Looks like cotton thread has its limitation. Now to go get some horse hairs and looking for horse stable ...just kidding😂
