Every once in awhile I get very lucky and find a really nice piece of wood on a pallet. This particular piece came from a pallet that I got from a flooring store. While taking it apart I noticed one of the slats was curly maple. I put the piece aside and figured I would use it for something special. Eventually I planed the piece down to about 5/16 or so and set aside on my wood rack. I had forgotten about the piece until I came across it when I was moving some stuff around my shop. I had been wanting to try and make a wooden cake knife for quite some time and when I came upon this particular piece of wood I decided to give it a go. The process is fairly easy and very satisfying in the end. Its a lot like making a steel knife minus the heat treat but in the end you still get that same level of achievement and satisfaction when making an actual knife. A little bit of a disclaimer here only the blade is pallet wood the handles were Wenge which was given to me by a buddy of mine who was going to throw away his scraps. Luckily he gave me a call before he threw them out. Since I plan to use this for cutting cakes I applied 3 heavy coats of a food safe finish to the entire knife. I am curious to see how it holds up after washing. If you have any questions let me know and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for watching.
